Australian authorities have urgently recalled packaged baby spinach after customers reported hallucinations from eating it

Spinach more frequently than the other fresh vegetables gets cited for contamination here in the USA.
I would think Romaine lettuce should be higher on that list. There’re many recalls for it. It’s usually e-coli contamination.

Because frozen spinach is compressed. A cup of fresh spinach is loose and has lots of space between the leaves. Cook a bag of spinach and drain it. I’ll estimate it’s less than 10% of the original volume.
I wanted to say that but couldn't find the right words. I knew but you had to say it for me. WTG

Are they hallucinating that they are Popeye? 😁

Actually, in this country, the usual produce problem is romaine lettuce For some rreason, that frequently gets contaminated with e coli. And romaine is a very popular form of lettuce. Not sure if it's found in the fresh heads of lettuce, or in the packaged kind in plastic bags.

Yeah, that's something we (older citizens) don't want to mess with. I had it at 18. I kept eating and drinking, but damn you basically poop blood along with electrolytes. I also lost 25 lbs in 2 weeks.

That's what kills us or small children. 5 years later Seattle had a outbreak, killed 4 children (below 10) and 178 were left with brain, kidney injuries.

I never buy packaged greens of any kind, ever. There is always the possibility of some kind of contamination so I buy fresh or frozen. I don't mind the prep work. My health is worth it. Lol. :)
I used to buy bagged lettuce and other veggies but it seems like there's ALWAYS a recall going on with bagged veggies, so I stopped. I buy fresh or frozen now too.
Are they sure it was "spinach"?
That was my first thought, and are they sure it was not intentional! Somebody laced it with some kind of psychedelic plant for kicks.

This is a good example of why I stopped buying those packaged salad greens as well as fresh lettuce. There have been too many "outbreaks" over the years. I used to love spinach salad too! :sneaky:
@OldFeller "I misread this at first and thought that people were feeding their babies spinach." Don't feel bad...I did the same thing at first. :)

I was trying to imagine these infants gumming their fresh spinach leaves. That's when I went back and reread it.

Me too.

But here's a fun fact that came up in a google search:

"One cup of frozen spinach has more than four times the amount of nutrients, such as fiber, folate, iron and calcium, than a cup of fresh spinach, so if you want to power up, do it with frozen spinach."

I never ate fresh spinach until very far into my adulthood. Always frozen up until then. I don't even like fresh spinach.
This can be said about other frozen vegetables too, so I've read. The reason is that the produce is picked, processed and frozen right away whereas by the time "fresh" veges are picked, transported and sit on store shelves before being purchased, Lord only knows how many days have passed during which time they start losing nutrients. Truthfully, I never did further research on that theory. But for convenience and out of sheer laziness, I always buy frozen vegetables and mango chunks. @Gaer

I mostly buy them to make my mango smoothies which I freeze to make mango sorbet. I used to add 1/2 a banana but recently found out I like it better without the banana. This is so easy. I have a Magic Bullet. I put slightly thawed (in microwave) mango chunks to about halfway mark of the medium blender container. I add canned whipped cream almost to the top and blend for about a minute or until all the chunks have smoothed out. Then I freeze for a minimum of 45 minutes. Sooooo good! :p The best frozen mango products I've purchased are Ultra Organics 5 lb bag from Costco and Great Value (Walmart's brand). Try it and enjoy! :D
