Taking a break from drinking

Just this morning I read an article- If you're trying to take a break from drinking, try these 6 strategies.
I had realized for some time that my nightly cocktail was killing my effort to drop a few pounds. Even-though I frequently ran a calorie deficit, my body would grab the alcohol and store it immediately. So, not particularly as a 'new Year's resolution' but rather a weight management decision, I am hereby ceasing my nightly cocktail for[at least] the month of January. My main motivation: to look as good as I can for my son's wedding Feb. 1st. ;)

When I read: "Taking a break from drinking," alcohol didn't register. But if one thing about alcohol does register, it's those who drink it and then get behind the wheel of their car.

My retired paramedic wife has seen so many lives shattered by drink/driving. So many widows and more than a few widowers. Those for whom alcohol is their crutch forget, conveniently, that the reason for referring to being under the influence as intoxicated, is because alcohol is a toxin, and a toxin is a poison. Enough said!

Giving up your nightly cocktail will surely cut down on calories. I enjoy a cocktail before dinner, but I don't have one every evening. Instead, I'll have pomegranate juice on the rocks with a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Of course there are still calories in pom juice, but I'm not switching out to lose weight. If you miss your cocktail, you might try having some sparkling water or seltzer with a squeeze of lime or lemon juice as a mocktail. Just a little something refreshing to sip on that won't break the scale.

Nathan, I have no doubt you'll be slim, debonair, and look absolutely smashing at your son's wedding!👨‍💼;)

Good for you, but you look pretty nice already.

That's a good thing you're doing for yourself and your son's wedding. I wish the best for both of you.....hugs.

I was never a big drinker either, but several years ago I lost my taste for alcohol all together and just don't drink anything anymore. What's odd (and maybe it's not odd at all) is my whole circle of friends changed. I seem to have drifted away from all the people I used to "party" with. It wasn't a conscious choice, it just happened over time. It's like I lost anything I had in common with them. Maybe I never did to begin with.

Anyway, after I quit drinking beer/wine altogether I expected to lose some weight. Didn't happen. I must have made up for it elsewhere!

we had a good social life before hubbys stroke, so we drank together a few times a week
but now , we dont drink it at all.....hubby cant because of his meds , and i have to be alert at all times, , because of driving and caring
plus its not much fun having a glass of wine on your own x
ive always drunk alot of water , so water , cranberry ,and tomato juice are my favourites
hubby has a sweeter tooth , he likes milkshakes, smoothies etc .....

Vaping sativa cuts my appetite so down I have to remember to eat, or else I'd forget. Used to work the other way---getting the munchies I mean---but now it has the opposite effect. Haven't had a drink in almost five years, I take too much medication.
About a year ago I quit using sativa edibles, they did 2 undesirable things: Made me insanely ravenous with the munchies, and ruined my deep sleep(as measured with the Fitbit). o_O

I needed a break from drinking too, but I just said, "Screw the whole break thing," because I knew a break would never be enough for me. So I just quit. Well, that's an over simplification. It took some doing. That was 27 years ago, on the 3rd of this month in fact. But I'm 100% behind you if a break is all you need.
