Wife agreed I can get another Bernese Mountain Dog

We adopted Sadie, a female Bernese Mountain Dog from an Ohio Amish puppy-mill breeding dog, she is 5 years old. Before we went on vacation Sadie periodically came near to be petted, nowadays she hides in her crate until bedtime.
I hope by adopting a young Berner male will draw Sadie out from her past into the present and live accordingly.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are such a gorgeous breed ... hope that by getting another one, it helps Sadie's issues.

It sounds like you have great patience with your rescue dog. Do keep us posted on how things that develop with the new dog. I hope it works out well.

Mr Ed: I always loved the Bernese Mountain Dogs - they are the "gentle giants"

My dogs are crated whenever I leave the house and during the night. One crate is by the kitchen and the other in the bedroom. Dogs view the crate as their own "den" - keeps them out of trouble (ie no counter surfing)

And if there is a fire ? And no one is there to let them out ?

Good point - hopefully there will never be a fire. Two of the neighbours have the keys to my house - they will let the dog out if needed. (When they had dogs, I had the key to their house "in case of emergency".)

sadly, if there was a fire, it wouldn't matter if dogs were crated or loose in a house.
Convenience ..... when one chooses not to be bothered with the dog, or worries so about their trappings .... in the crate the animal goes.

IMO, cruel ... but the humans come up with explanations that satisfy themselves , in an attempt to speak "for" the animal.
sounds like someone who has never ever ever left their kids unattended... even for a minute.

think about what puppies do if you turn your back for the blink of an eye. imo, less cruel to crate say while you make a supermarket run... and have pet & owner happy to be reunited... than come home to shredded furniture or "accidents" throughout the house.

But, according to your profile you already have 5 cats and 3 dogs!

That's plenty to keep your Bernese Mountain dog company unless she's separated from them in her crate.
Sadie doesn't care if your dogs and cats aren't purebred Bernese. Please don't get another Bernese.

What happened when you went on vacation? You say she was okay before but not okay after.
What did you do with them all, while you were on vacation? Were they all crated?

I like the breed, have you owned a purebred Berner? Sadie socially regressed because we were away and has yet to return back to her former level of trust. My daughters stayed here at the house. Sadie prefers staying in her crate, the other dogs come and go. The crates are open all the time.

Many pet owners have stickers telling first responders what animals are inside & where they are at. It gives a better chance of having the pets rescued as they can grab the crate & pet & get out.

My neighbor house burned down in the middle of the night & was a complete loss. They were home when it happened, but was only able to save 1 out 4 pets because they hid due to being scared. Imagine being a pet & seeing strangers trying to grab you in the middle of a fire, what would you do?

If keeping them in crates when I'm not there could save their life, I am for it.

*** please note my sarcasm!

My friends have two mini Bernedoodle sisters. They went for one & ended up with two. These sisters weigh between 40 & 45#. Super sweet dogs that love people. Each have their own crates to sleep in when they get tired. It was used to keep them from trouble when puppies & to house break them.

Yes, when some guests come, they are crated. Due to their energy level & wanting to be lap dogs, they need to calm down before being around people who aren't used to them or dogs in general.

Being from California( until our recent move to Idaho) we were always advised to make sure our dogs were used to crates as,in case of a wildfire that necessitated us(and/or them) having to go to a shelter, they would be as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. In fact, you cannot bring your dog to a shelter if it cannot be crated.

Our dogs have been crated just enough so they feel comfortable in them. They are ALWAYS crated when traveling in the car-that is the only safe way for a dog to travel IMO.I have heard over and over of people losing their dogs in car accidents that were loose in the car-not to death but due to them being frightened and taking off. Some are eventually found but many are not.

I LOVE big dogs - Great White Pyrenees and Berenese! No room, however, so I just sigh and appreciate them. So great that you love your Sadie.

I don't watch a lot of TV but am a football/basketball fan, so I fell in love with this commercial which GMC has been running for a couple of years at holiday time:

GMC Christmas Commercial

Yes, I enjoy that commercial too. But wondered if he felt he ought to get her something a little more, to go along with the puppy.. 😁
