First openly trans woman is set to be executed in Missouri on Tuesday

..but then you'd be paying for it...
Exactly. In this case, the person committed the murder in 2003, was sentenced in 2006 and has lived all of those years incarcerated at the expense of taxpayers. I realize this could turn into a political discussion so I'll limit my comments.

Bottom line is that the execution was carried out.
Making our discussion a bit academic, I guess.
I don't know, the cost issue is still significant.

It costs more than twice as much to try and house a death penalty inmate. Given that we take ~20 years to get it done it would probably cost less to house these people in prison for life. We either need to figure out how to speed it up, or just drop the death penalty.

I am ambivalent as to which would be best, but doing what we are doing now makes little sense.

The last three volumes as I recall are about the Eastern empire, or what we might call Byzantium, and don't end until 1453.

I can't remember if Gibbon went into the fiscal decline of Rome and the debasement of the currency. But that was a huge factor. So were the civil wars among factions siding with different claimants to the emperor's thrones, the barbarian incursions and the rise of the Parthians. Basically the whole thing was a mess after the Antonines.

I do think we are in decline. We are running up debts we can't ever pay, we can't secure our southern border, we can't educate our children, we can't seem to stop taking drugs, and we tolerate crime and other antisocial behavior to an unhealthy extent. The parallels to Rome are pretty limited, however.
He does cover debasement of the currency. There were even a couple of instances where subsequent emperors restored monetary value. This was probably both a rudimentary PR move, plus it may have had the practical effect of making the money useful as a currency, since after repeated debasements it was getting to be like a quasi-fiat currency.

He actually take it to the Holy Roman empire, as far as he could, as I recall. It was still in existence at the time of his death.

He kept going back over certain periods, maybe concentrating on military/territorial expansion, then back again from a religious POV, then political, etc.

Look at this in todays' papers... how tragic is this ?

Desperate father pleads with his paediatrician ex-wife NOT to chemically castrate their son, 9

A desperate father has been pleading with his ex wife to not chemically castrate their son after she moved to California from Texas.

Jeff Younger, of Texas, revealed a video of his child, James, nine, claiming he's a girl on Tucker Carlson Tonight. When asked if he was a boy, James told his dad in the video: 'No, I'm a girl.'

The young boy claimed his mother, who is a pediatrician, told him he was female because he 'loved girls' and would dress him up in 'dresses.' Younger claimed his ex-wife, Dr. Anne Georgulas, planned to chemically castrate their son by the age of nine, his current age.

Chemical castration refers to the use of chemicals or drugs to stop sex hormone production. Medications commonly known as 'puberty blockers' are increasingly used on minors with gender dysphoria, and there is no federal age limit on who can be prescribed them.

'My blood ran cold when I realized what she had planned for that boy,' Younger told Carlson.

The drugs to put a person to death costs about $100. However, until the state pays for all the legal charges due to the costs associated with appeals and court costs, the price tag can rise to $1,000,000.00.

Boston Children's Hospital has been known to perform some of these gender altering surgeries. In my mind, this is just sick. The better idea would be wait until the child is at least 18 and let him/her decide.

You can defend yourself but not with a gun, or unnecessary force.
It's ridiculous.
same here... you can have a licence for a gun, but you can't use it on someone if they for example break into your property and attack you..you will go to prison

I own guns.. and I don't care what the law says.. if my guns are within reach I will use them if I fear for my life..

After reading all of the posts here, I've decided that I have to leave this forum because the hatred and ignorance expressed here is so appalling. I don't want this kind of poison in my life

What's ridiculous is thinking you can defend yourself against someone who is armed..without a gun.
What do you suggest defending yourself with when your adversary has a gun? Or any weapon?
