A mother home with her two young children “exercised her right to protect herself” by fatally shooting an intruder armed with a shovel.
A Louisiana mum shot a man dead after he broke into her house while she was home with her two young children on Sunday, police said.
The suspect, Robert Rheams, allegedly broke into the home on Klein Road in Tangipahoa Parish, armed with a shovel and tyre iron in the early hours, the local sheriff’s office said.

Rheams, 51, and the woman got into a physical scuffle after she found him inside her home. During the struggle, she fatally shot him around 5am, according to Chief Jimmy Travis.

The home intruder, who was out on parole after serving two decades in prison for armed robbery, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said he was also the suspect in a carjacking hours before he broke into the family’s home.

There have been no arrests and Travis said it appears that the woman was “exercising her Second Amendment rights to protect herself and her children from a violent home invasion”.

Good for her, save the taxpayer the cost of a Trial.. and more prison time... hope she's alright , having to fight someone and shoot them to protect your kids and yourself will stay with her forever..

Exercising the right to protect oneself or defending against a potential attacker is a choice. Nothing forced about it.

She'll be forced to remember the choice she made though, forever.
Yes, always find something negative when a mother saves her life & the lives of her children because she used a.......gun. The nerve! How dare she!
How awful that she didn't let the intruder do whatever he wanted; after all, he had rights, too!

YES! YES! YES! If an armed intruder was trying to break into my home, I would shoot him and drag him inside.
We MUST UPHOLD the Constitution of the United States!
Why would there be any need to drag anyone inside after you shot them?
Is that what it says to do, somewhere in the Constitution of the United States?
And armed with what? I'm not saying that the OP intruder wasn't up to no good
but what constitutes armed enough that you would shoot someone outside of your
dwelling and then drag them inside afterward? What if the person was lost and only
wanted to ask directions? What is your expertise on constitutional law?

Any decent person is going to be affected by killing someone, even in self-defense, but I'm glad she had a weapon and knew how to use it. Her life would likely have been affected more if she didn't.
She did what was legally allowed, evidently and used what she had available. She made a choice and it was a choice that can't be undone. I wasn't there but killing wasn't necessarily the only possible choice, I'd think. I'm happy knowing of your glee.

If someone broke into my home in the wee hours of the morning or at any other time, armed with a shovel and a lug wrench, I wouldn't assume he broke in to plant a shrub or change a tire. The perpetrator, being armed in that manner, showed that he wouldn't hesitate to harm the inhabitants of the home. In fact, it showed he was prepared to do so. Being of sound mind, I'd feel threatened and wouldn't hesitate to protect my children and me.

At only 5'2" and 100 lbs, saying, "please leave" to an armed intruder who's invaded my home doesn't afford me much protection to stop any type of attack. I'm not going to wait for him to attack me or my children with either of those weapons. If it's within my power, I'd choose to stop him by any means at my disposal.

I'm sure that the woman was doing what she had to do to defend her children and herself, but I'm not certain she was actually trying to kill him. I'm also sure the woman is beyond distressed that she fatally shot the intruder and no doubt will carry that with her for the rest of her days. In my book that was a better choice than letting her children and herself be physically attacked by a weapon wielding intruder. I'd rather live with his death on my conscience that have to live with the fact that he killed or crippled my children.

Hopefully, and by the grace of God, you'll never be in that situation. If you are, good luck talking your way out of it.

Self defence would justify this woman in Australia, even without constitutional permission. Self defence is a right under English common law, which underpins Australian laws. There would, however, be a coronial inquest to determine whether it was actually self defence.

Okay but he was, maybe, someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s father, someone’s “someone”, dirtbag or not. I feel no glee for anything bad that happens in the world and I for sure feel pity for all those who knew of and possibly loved him in a non-dirt bag sense, that is assuming there were any. I don’t know for sure but I’m giving the benefit of a doubt. He didn’t harm me.

Time has been on my side up to now and I think that is the same for most people, here or there. The threat of something violent happening to any one of us is always there, quite true but I refuse to arm myself to the teeth and live in fear “just in case” some threat comes my way.

Sorry, but Kumbaya won't get it done.

I feel glee whenever justice happens. Because there is too little of it in this world.
A career criminal should never see the outside of a prison. Not so much for punishment; but to protect the rest of us from the harm he will cause when he's released.

Of course he was someone's son. So were Adolph Hitler, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Gacy & Charles Manson. So what? Everyone is someone's son or daughter.
Nature can be careless & these were examples of nature's carelessness.

Yes, killing wasn't her only choice. She could have allowed herself to be raped & beaten to death, then allowed her kids to be at a thug's mercy. How selfish of her!
