Monterey Park shooting: 10 killed and more injured in shooting near LA

What share of U.S. gun deaths are murders and what share are suicides?

"Though they tend to get less public attention than gun-related murders, suicides have long accounted for the majority of U.S. gun deaths. In 2020, 54% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides (24,292), while 43% were murders (19,384), according to the CDC. The remaining gun deaths that year were unintentional (535), involved law enforcement (611) or had undetermined circumstances (400)."

Police say it's too early to tell whether this is a hate crime. Ten people are dead. Isn't that enough? So does the killer get less punishment if it's not a hate crime? About the only meaning "hate crime" has for me is that it somewhat describes one particular type of motive. But dead is dead, no matter what the motive.
Yes. The government is death on hate crimes so it probably does mean that.

So what? The U.S. has the most mass shootings of any other developed country. More than 70% of mass shootings in developed countries happen in the US, international analysis shows (phys.org)

Hard for me to see, but he looks young
He was 72 Pepper. @Nosy Bee-54 This is the first I'm reading about the Baton Rouge shooting...they are so focused on Monterey Park.

I just don't know what to think! Why are people using mass murder as a way to settle the score with one person or deal with their own demons?! This is a terrible tragedy....yet again in America. This travel advisory for the U.S. is 3-1/2 years old. I imagine any updated versions will paint an even worse picture of this country.

The killer was making silencers, stockpiling ammunition and used a mac-10 machine pistol depending on version is illegal.

Not quite. If you have a clean record, can pay for one ($7,000) and have a FFL permit, you can legally own one.

Can you buy a MAC-10 legally?

The Ingram Model 10, better known as the MAC-10 (Military Armament Corporation) submachine gun, was produced in both 9mm and . 45 ACP versions. Here's everything you need to know about it. With a current starting price tag of $7,000, the MAC-10 is one of the least expensive machine guns one can legally own in the USA.Jul 27, 2022

Was that the US version of the Uzi or visa versa? Since he's making silencers he could've modified it.

Let's see. We have six year olds wandering around with weapons, and shooting people, and I'm not sure about this, but which has more casualties- a shooting war in Ukraine, in 2023 ,or the death count in multiple shootings in the US? Do you think it's insane to flood the nation with weapons, and not expect anyone to use them?

Spot on! It IS insane. And it's getting worse. I really do fear for the future of this country. It's is becoming a war zone and will one day implode if nothing is done to strengthen gun laws.

No one who is not in the military should be allowed to have any kind of automatic weapon. Period.

You're going to have responsible owners and irresponsible owners. Sad fact, few of the former, many of the latter

If the guns weren't so available in the first place, there would be much fewer "irresponsible owners" and much less carnage. Nice try at sweeping the main issue under the carpet.

You can buy a fully automatic machine gun with FFL Permit. (Caveat: pre 1986 only, newer ones cannot be imported)

Rules here....

But I also know you can make your own rifle, pistol, shotgun or automatic weapon. You just can't SELL them or you're looking at long fed pen time.

Oh, this just popped into my mail.
