We feed birds

AZ Jim

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
They are so aware of our handouts they actually show uo at our sliding glass door to the patio. We feed Sparrows, mourning doves, Collared doves, Gambel Quail, Bush Tail Grackle, Common Grackle, Thrush, Finch, a couple of unidentified species and separetly Anna Hummingbirds. The get Oatmeal, and wheat bread. Here in the desert the must have water. We have a large bird bath they drink from and a fountain that runs recycled water 24/7. They are such fun to watch.

I think it's great that you're feeding the birds, we get a lot at our house without even feeding them. Our back lawn is chock full of earthworms, and after a rain or watering with the sprinkler, the birdies can be seen helping themselves until they're full. We have pine and spruce trees in the yard also, and they seem to feed off some of those seeds.

I know I've seen some Magpies eating our pears from the pear tree, and our cherry tree has hit the dust, but there used to be many little birds eating the cherries during summer. When we were younger, I used to buy bird seed and fill the feeders, but between the squirrels, Magpies and crows taking over, I gave up on that after a couple of years. I'm sure there are methods to feed the small birds only, but I never took the effort to buy special feed or feeders.

I used to throw small pieces of bread over our fence into the field behind us, but it just seemed to be attracting the field mice, so I stopped that. We don't have a fountain, but in our area the birds can usually find some water to drink. In summer if I see some little Robins and other birds out there in the yard, I'll put the oscillating sprinkler on very low, just enough for them to take a little bath, cool off and get a drink. Love to watch our fine feathered friends. :D

So do we Jim. We have 4 wild seed eaters stations, a birdbath and a humming bird feeder.
We also throw out some raw shelled peanuts for a squirrel who started visiting us. We sit and watch them often.
The dog doesn't even bark at the squirrel anymore; I think they have become friends.

I bet, if I lived in Arizona I would definitely have birdbaths out for the wild birds. :sunshine:

We feed birds. One feeder in front and two in the back yard. Bird baths in front and back. I sprinkle a few seeds on the ground for the doves. Wife buys bags of seeds. Sometime I think the birds eat better than We do.

Bird and squirrel feeder here!
We don't get quite the variety as those further south during the winter, but our birdies always keep us entertained.
My favourites are the chubby turtle doves.
We have a general 'feeding station' and 4 for-birds-only feeders.
This is our resident squirrel Albert. The squirrels here are very small, but mighty!

Aaaww... squirrels are lovely. We don't have any and our marsupial equivalents are all nocturnal and very shy. We never see them

Feeding birds is one of my favourite things to do but I don't feed the native birds because is encourages dependency.
I've fed bread to ducks all around the world though because I just can't resist them.
I do have a bird bath that is very popular.

We have bird feeders and get blue tits, great tits and chaffinches. And sometimes a woodpecker. I like to throw bird nuts on the steps and see if I can attract a red squirrel which I do occasionally.

We have whooping cranes here, guy next door was arrested for feeding endangered birds. Cost him $1,500....careful you people make sure you know what you're feeding.

We have a couple of seed feeders, a fat snax feeder and a peanut feeder, also a stone birdbath whichever we keep filled up with clean water. As another poster says, it does attract jackdaws and pigeons as well, and we would prefer to only feed the small birds, but it's impossible.

Uh......oh yeah!.....That's it.....the squirrels....

We rarely see grey squirrels and don't like them here as they bring disease to our beloved reds. But we do occasionally see the reds as they are endangered. I set up my tripod and threw some nuts out when I spied this one in the back one day.
