Question About Air Fryer Thingies

We don't have an air fryer or a toaster oven but they aren't that expensive. How many of you guys have one? My oven takes forever to heat up and there are only 2 of us so I'm not cooking turkey or prime rib very often. It also heats up the house quite a bit (think summer heat in Texas). Are these combo things any good at general baking/roasting? I really don't know much about them, especially as a "fryer". We would use it for whole chicken, enchaladas, salmon filets, chicken breasts, lasagna - stuff like that... for two people.

I'm thinking that during the summer I can take the thing outside and do my stuff there without heating up the house. I'm also hoping that it would lower the electric bill compared to the oven.

Thoughts? Opinions? Warnings?

I bought this one last year and it works great! I use it to cook chicken breasts, steaks, fish, fries, and pretty much anything that will fit in it. A small, whole chicken just barely fits. It also makes toast.

I have an Air fryer.. in fact currently I have 2 because a new bigger one was just delivered this evening!!

It uses so much less Energy to cook with .. most food that I cook in the AF takes around 1/3 less time ..than in the oven..but aside from that, everything tastes hugely better for being Air baked ( it's misnomer to say fried because you don't fry things)..

I would never not have one now..

Although these things are called air fryers, I pretty much use mine as a mini oven, not just for air frying per se. I find most things are quicker to cook in it. Some things though seem to take a similar amount of time as they would in my large oven.

As an aside re roasting turkeys, what they call "spatchcocking" will make them fit in an oven easier, as well as cook faster. You basically remove the backbone and flatten the turkey. This results in all the parts of the turkey cooking uniformly in much less time. (And leaves it very juicy, crispy and tasty.) Here's a video (1:17 minutes):

6-in-1 Air Fryer, 7 Quart Smart Electric Hot Airfryer Oven Oilless Cooker, 1800W Large Capacity Multifunction Health fryer with LCD Digital Screen and Nonstick Frying Pot, ETL/UL Certified

Have a gas oven for larger items & the above two for smaller. Use the above two as needed for whatever we are going to make. Like using both since they do what they are advertised to do.

Electric use I have no clue since the major electric power use is the 4 ton HVAC for heating & cooling.

My Breville oven is acting up. Taking much too long to cook anything. Thinking of the age, it must be 8 years now.

I have a small air fryer because it’s just the two of us. I routinely use it to cook chicken breasts, thighs, burgers, salmon, a variety of vegetables. Faster than the oven. Less messy than sautéing.

it will hold 2 breasts, 4 thighs or burgers, 2 salmon filets, and enough veggies to feed the two of us.

Parts wise not very expensive. Google how to replace parts videos sure beats experimenting with how to.

Can an air fryer be underneath the kitchen cabinets?
I wouldn't recommend using it under a cabinet. The air flow emitted from the fryer probably has grease or oil mist that would cling to the wall.
Are they hard to clean? Do parts go in the dishwasher?
Not hard to clean but the one we have no parts are detachable. Of course the basket that holds whatever is detachable. Mine I've never had anything stick so I usually soak it in warm soapy water then rinse. I always lightly spray the lift out basket 1st. to prevent anything sticking.

One thing I did learn that isn't part of use instructions is that oil residue can build up inside the frying chamber. I use soft cloth paper towels to wipe away that buildup. Never had a problem with doing that.

The AF has to have at least 5 inches space above and at the back .. so as long as you have that space they can go under the cabinet.

They are extremely easy to clean. They can go in the dishwasher, but they are so fast to clean that you can just run the basket and the base tray under a hot tap with dishwasher soap...

Here's a review of 3 of the best sellers.. Mine is the one in the middle.

I bought a Cosori AF a few months ago. My new electric range has an AF feature but I didn't want to use that much electric to use it so I thought I'd try a counter unit and Cosori was highly recommended.

They are very energy efficient and it doesn't heat up the kitchen like an oven does. I made pork chops in my AF yesterday for hubby and me. It only took 11 minutes and I didn't have to clean the stove from splatters. I've made a lot of things in mine and have been very pleased with the outcome. The only things I use my oven for are our Thanksgiving turkey, prime rib at Christmas and I still make cake, cookies and bread in the oven. I've seen recipes for cake, cookies and breads in the AF but I'm old-fashioned in a lot of ways and still prefer my oven for those things.
Some products, like Pillsbury biscuits and rolls, have AF instructions on the packages now.

AF are great…..the ones that came out in the begging needed a lot of tweaks solved.
The ones now are energy saving and have so many functions.
Had a small one…..then went into a large one, why, i don’t know…..both are convection oven, air fryer, bake, broil, toaster.
Because of my future move…..sold the big one…..then…..friends presented me with one as a early house warming gift…..this one is an in between size, very compact, with all the same functions as my other 2…..so l sold my small one.00746323-FFF8-4E8F-B627-447B05CEE3A9.jpeg

Thank you everybody! I'm reading all these positives. Are there any negatives?
yes if you need to cook several things.. say like fish.. and a meat pie... unlike a regular oven you can't put both in the AF at the same time.. unless you use separate baskets (containers) , which you can buy online.. ( parchment, or silicone).. If you have a large family, you will need a large AF, and that will need a good size space on the counter.. If otoh.. you are just 2 people, and you want for example fish and chips for dinner.. you will have to cook them separately, .. because there won't be enough space to cook them in the AF together .. so in reality it would be just as well to cook them in the Oven

Tonight I had Lamb shank with rosemary gravy.. Sugar snap peas, battered potato fritter.

I cooked the lamb and the peas in the microwave, and the Potato in the AF.. I also cooked some Calimari in the AF at the same time as the potato.. it was an experiment to check on cooking times compared to my old AF... and both items took the same time ( 10 mins).. at the same Temp..and they came out beautifully cooked.. so my whole dinner took just 10 minutes, and I never needed to use the stove at all.

This is similar in size to mine, not too big, not too small. Right now I am baking a boneless pork chop stuffed with apple and cranberry stuffing....this is a wonderful alternative to heating my full oven for a small portion of meat or a casserole.
