The statue of liberty - the truth behind it

Here she is visiting Las Vegas.

it was a gift to the U.S. from France
Yes, and really from the people of France, funded by contributions from individual people and local governments. As @deaver said not the Government of France. I think that makes it a much better story!

At the federal governments level at times we (the US) have a bit of a rocky relationship but when push came to shove we have always allied and visa versa with France and I think at some level been friends. Without France's help we may never have pushed the British out and gaining independence. The statue reminds me of all that.
the fact does remain that it was a gift from France to the U.S. Children in elementary schools are still being taught that much.
And I hope they always will, the correct version!

deaver is absolutely correct.... my husband is Egyptian and my father-in-law was a Professor of languages and history at Cairo university. I learnt a lot from them.

The statue, which was meant to stand at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, was anticipated as a grand project symbolizing the country’s burgeoning industrial development, steps towards Europeanization and social advances which Bartholdi pitched to the Egyptian government, especially Khedive Ismail.

Egypt declined the offer of the statue and the French decided to gift it to the US...that does not diminish the love at all.
The statue was originally designed as an Egptian woman.

Nice to have someone like you on the forum deaver....someone who knows history, thank you!

I think some of the confusion may be is that the original Statue of Liberty was redesigned after Egypt turned down the original version. The Statue was then redesigned, built and given to the U.S. as a gift.

Have you ever seen the replica in Michigan on Mackinac Island?

So, all in all, I agree with the story of France giving the U.S. the Statue of Liberty because when it was going to be given to Egypt, it was not the same design or name.
