Yes, and really from the people of France, funded by contributions from individual people and local governments. As @deaver said not the Government of France. I think that makes it a much better story!it was a gift to the U.S. from France
And I hope they always will, the correct version!the fact does remain that it was a gift from France to the U.S. Children in elementary schools are still being taught that much.
I respect so much of what France stands for and one of our greatest allies. We tend to forget how much they helped influence our history as a nation.. Without France's help we may never have pushed the British out and gaining independence. The statue reminds me of all that.
Absolutely, and we can thank them for tomorrow's Mardi Gras!We tend to forget how much they helped influence our history as a nation.

Here she is visiting Las Vegas.
I think some of the confusion may be is that the original Statue of Liberty was redesigned after Egypt turned down the original version. The Statue was then redesigned, built and given to the U.S. as a gift. So, all in all, I agree with the story of France giving the U.S. the Statue of Liberty because when it was going to be given to Egypt, it was not the same design or name.
Have you ever seen the replica in Michigan on Mackinac Island?
