Too much healthy food in stores!!

Never. I would rather starve than eat crickets
Look out for other Latin words: Lo custa, which should read locusta, but that sounds like locusts. Same family, it means grasshoppers.
"A new EU regulation now states that, in addition to mealworms and grasshoppers, a certain percentage of crickets may also be added to a large number of foods throughout the EU from January 24, 2023".

Mealworms are the larvae of two species of darkling beetles of the Tenebrionidae family,
Tenebrio molitor is their Latin name. Mmm! Enjoy!

I've heard of some of the food fads but generally I just ignore them. I have always cooked - mostly from scratch. When our boys were growing up, we would occasionally buy a pre-made meal but we always ended up tolerating it and never getting it again. DH and I have agreed that whatever we make is far more tasty than a meal from the store. I also like growing fruits and vegetables when I've been able to and freezing it for later. The only frozen vegetable that I buy is frozen chopped spinach. I always keep a couple of boxes in the back of the freezer to add to a pasta dish or savory pie.

I also like to look for low salt food - and its not as easy to find as it used to be. I just prefer my food to be less salty - plus the health benefit.

Well, I buy what I like. Today, shopping got 2 pkgs chicken thighs. Vegetable oil, 4 pastries, bread (still have 18 eggs) two THICK ham slices (damnit, forgot mayo!) Flour (for chicken) and 2 large beers (Steel reserve 8.1% alcohol by weight)

Now again. If I had a freezer, I'd buy more meat, frozen veggies and eat healthy, but for now, It's not happening. Oh, this is out the right side of my van that's what I drove on to get out and back in on......fun fun, fun.....View attachment 270065
LOL.. if you had a freezer you would buy more meat ?.. that looks like one giant freezer to me , right outside your door.. :sneaky::D

Sorry folks, I must disagree. While cauliflower rice doesn't appeal to me, at least partly because I don't avoid carbs, why should I have a problem with it being offered to people who enjoy it?

To be honest, I don't see a huge difference between eating crickets or mealworms and eating chickens, pigs, cows or goats.

Expecting that our food hasn't been "contaminated" and therefore inclusive of insect and rodent matter is naive. Without bees and other bugs, microscopic and visible, humans would soon starve.

Having almost no direct contact with farms behind has made many bizarrely squeamish and disconnected from where and how foods originate. Spoiler alert: Most crops grow in dirt! Yes, it's true. Filthy dirt!!! Often times with animal poop in it. Also insects and rodents. Imagine!!!
There oughta be a law...

@RadishRose, you reminded me when you mentioned mole sauces about an appetizer I just had on Valentines Day.

I've had mole before & didn't care for them so I wasn't keen on trying it again, BUT ... the appetizer was marinated roasted pork belly slices topped with pickled red onions & micro greens w/mole on the side. The mole sauce wasn't too spicy or chocolatey, a good balance of flavors that complimented the pork. I'm making myself hungry thinking about it.
Oh Lilac, that sounds fabulous! 🌹

Holly, I am serious. Be glad that GB left the EU! But nevertheless better look on the backside of the product. The problem is that the manufacturer can use the latin names of the insects. And look at Alligatorob's comment above for the U.S. It's a shame!
Well of course I'm glad we left the EU, for other reasons.. but of course we still have Lidl and Aldi as Major discount supermarkets so I suppose the food they stock might be subject to German law rather than the UK , I don't know .

well I'm certainly not disconnected by how food is grown or reared being surrounded by farmers and farmland.. I am completely aware that insects and worms get on the food as it's growing, but is it too much to expect for it not to be washed off ?

I think I'd pay more to avoid the food made from ground bugs, it sounds gross. On the other hand, this YouTube video of a guy in Thailand trying the different types of bugs makes them sound tasty. Apparently mealworms taste like crispy chicken...

Of course it's not too much to expect. However, not 100% of them will be removed by rinsing and other prep.

Intentionally adding them is another matter altogether.

People sometimes showed up at Oaxaca get-togethers with a bag of small roasted grasshoppers, seasoned with lime and chilis. They tasted like grass, so no big deal. You didn't eat a bowlful; you'd have just a taste, as a kind of ritual.

It was considered a "traditional" food, because historically Oaxaca was a poor area, and people ate whatever they could get.

If I said I liked Oaxaca, or that I'd lived there for a while, people would make some comment about my having "tasted the grasshopper."
