Buckingham Palace is set officially to describe Camilla as ‘Queen’, rather than ‘Queen Consort’.

..after the Coronation !

When she first married Charles the public were told that she would never become Queen that , instead she would become Queen consort if and when Charles became King..

Most of the public felt appeased at that.. that she would never replace our Beloved Queen.. nor the Princess of Wales Diana..who should have rightly become Queen..

Now todays' announcement is bound to upset a lot of people..

Camilla has won around the public, and the late Queen’s intervention in February last year when she called for her daughter-in-law to be known as ‘Queen Consort’ is seen as a crucial show of support.

Now Buckingham Palace is set to go further, according to insiders.

The first sign of the new approach came last week when Camilla launched the ‘Queen’s Reading Room’ – without the ‘Consort’ – when she updated the name of her charity, the Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room.

It is thought that the Court Circular – the official register of Royal engagements - may also soon reflect the change.

A well-placed source said: ‘There’s a view in the Palace that Queen Consort is cumbersome and it might be simpler for Camilla to be known just as the Queen when the time is right.

‘The Reading Room was a sign of that. Her Majesty is the Queen after all.

‘Prince Philip was Prince Consort officially, but he wasn’t known as Prince Consort. The Queen would of course still be Queen Consort so the Palace of course wouldn’t stop anyone calling Her Majesty that if they so chose.’

Some news outlets, including The Times and The Telegraph, have already dropped ‘Consort’ when writing about Camilla.

Oh well, I guess the next few days will tell what people will think of this, I really can't see the problem.
Prince Phillip was known as Prince, not Prince consort.

King Charles should be worried about how the public views him, I saw the yellow signs that said "Not my king"
Camilla has put the work in, King Charles has been playing the generous King of the people, but he has not read the people.

Exactly...he was never known as ''King or even King Consort''..

This is what I was wondering... but I know so little about the topic, I didn't want to say the wrong thing. Now that it's brought up, though... why *was* Philip never called King if it's a possibility for Camilla? And if it's the choice of the reigning monarch, does that mean the former Queen didn't want the title for Philip and the present King *does* want it for his wife? Or are there rules and laws about those things according to gender?

I don't know, but I do know that the Queen just before she died, said that she would like it if Camilla became Queen Consort, if she'd wanted her to become Queen she would have said so..

I'd be interested to see how the public takes this... we were always told that Camilla would never be Queen ..after all she's a commoner ..whereas Philip who never got to be King ..or King Consort was not only Royal by birth but even more Royal than the Queen..

People have short memories.
I'm aware that the term "Queen" as in QEII, & Camila's "Queen" have two different meanings. One is Head of State, & Heir, the latter is just married to the king. To me, Queen Consort always sounded sort of sordid- like the king's bimbo or something. There is a problem calling Camila "Queen", what do you call the partner of a Queen as in QEII?

prince... Prince Philip !!

@hollydolly ... That question I asked last week... found the answer. It's from CBS News and BBC:

A woman who marries the king can be called a queen, but for men who marry the monarch, there are different rules. They can't use the king title because it is only given to males who inherit the throne, according to BBC News.

Other than for formal events or in news articles, I think Camila will still just be referenced as Camila. That’s how we’ve always known her.

yes , however just before the Queen died she announced that when Camilla became Queen she was to be known as Queen Consort...

So. If Prince Philip was still alive and Charles became king, it would be King Charles and Prince Philip? LOL

Re Camilla, I'm sorry. Without knowing her and without being a Brit, I don't like her if for no other reason than she was the third person in Charles' and Diana's marriage (doubtful that there would have been any scandal re Diana and another man had it not been for Charles not keeping his britches zipped).

Having said that, and being the incredibly shallow person that I am, That Woman is as ugly as homemade sin. There. I said it. She always has an expression on her face that makes it look like she's sneering at the mere mortals. Imagine basing my opinion on her looks (like I said, I'm incredibly shallow). Keep in mind that the reason Charles didn't marry her in the first place is that she's a...gasp...commoner.

My mother used to tell me to cultivate a nice personality because I'd never get anywhere on either my looks or my brains. Apparently, Camilla's mother didn't tell her that. (BTW, I should have listened to my mother.)
