Anyone following the Alex Murdaugh trial in SC ?

I cannot watch this mess. Those Southern drawls alone make my skin crawl. Worse than chalk on a blackboard to me.
When I first came to the south, I was in disbelief that people really did speak that way. I thought that was just on TV.
It would drive me crazy but after so many years it's normal and somewhat endearing.

funny you should say that...going off topic just for a minute.. When I first moved to the south of England, and after the 'holiday period'' maybe a few months.. I thought I would lose my mind if one other person spoke to me in this cockney-esque London accent.. . of course I was the incomer, so it was my problem not theirs.. but honestly I got to the stage where I thought I couldn't listen to one more word ..it drove me mad..

Fortunately about a year after I arrived, I got married and we moved down to the west country and a different accent, and then sevral more places after that until we returned here .. and so eventually I was able to tolerate the accent..and now when I'm overseas and hear someone talking with a local accent, I feel comforted by it.. after 50 years lol..

Well. I just watched the whole 3 episodes.. This is like something out of a scary TV drama... Terrible.. I'm in shock that this was going on in real life.
I feel like now that I can't associate the A Murdoch in the documentary with the unassuming polite Southern Gentleman in the dock..or equally the son Buster .. or in fact even any of Murdoch's extended family. ...but having see it with my own eyes I know it to be true. They all need to be arrested , and put away for a very long time and let that county start healing .. just beggars belief!!

Did the documentary mention the case of Stephen Smith, the young gay man that attended school with Buster, whose body was found alongside a road late at night? It seems it was staged to be a car accident but there seemed to be a bullet hole in his head. This was at one time tied to the Murdaughs as well.

I will now have to watch the series!

yes they've applied to have the case re-opened, they all seem pretty sure Buster did it after being afraid his affair with Stephen would be revealed.
There was no bullet in his head but he had been beaten and then his body staged to look as tho' he'd been hit by a car..

... and also the Housekeeper who mysteriously died on the steps of their house after Alex took out a £4.5 million public liability insurance on the property the month before, and then sued himself when she died, and then didn't pay the proceeds to her family..she is to be exhumed.. after her death certificate stated she died of Natural causes..!

Is he going for a diminished responsibility due to substance abuse/ addiction plea?
No because he's not admitting killing his wife and son... altho' he's claiming that his pill addiction caused other issues like Paranoia..but then saying the paranoiac thoughts would only last seconds!!

Kind of reminds me of the Benson murders where Steven Benson of the Benson and Hedges tobacco multi millionaires killed his mother and sister so he could inherit all the money. He used pipe bombs to get the job done.

Steven Benson

Just saw...Alex Murdaugh just outlawyered the prosecution.

And...I've been thinking this...al along.

I'm watching his brother give evidence on his behalf. The brother comes across as everybody's friend.. making out their family was no different to anyone elses' families ( we all saw the documentary , so pull the other one ).. but the issue with it is the Brother has been sitting in the court for the whole length of this trial.. so of course he'll know which answers to dispute when asked about them.
I feel that there's going to be enough doubt that Alex committed this murder that he'll be found not guilty.....and I feel he did it.. who else could have in the space of just a few minutes.. ?

Another thing that's odd about this trial, is that the jury have been barred from taking notes..! I mean a 5 week trial, and not allowed to write anything down !!:oops:...thankfully they've just been given the go ahead to go and visit the crime scene.. however.. it's been almost 2 years , so what significance it'll be to them given they've already been shown a myriad of photos, is anyone's guess, but at least it's something

He'll probably walk on the murder charges, but he's still got a heapin' helpin' of charges against him for all the other shady cr@p he's done.

Feel sorry for his surviving son. Hope he can change his name and move on.

They'll be given the transcripts, though. That'll make for a long deliberation time, but they don't have to worry about forgetting something.

N.Y.judge Jeanine Pirro..
said..(saw on google) "she would bet her house on it..that it'll be hung jury".

I go along with that.
I think he's screwed. The jury selection took forever; it was done very carefully.

That said, it's very likely his attorneys will find technical errors and maybe get retrials and this will go on for another ever while he sits someplace cushy wearing an ankle bracelet.

I'm going to bet he gets off.. it only takes one Juror to make it a hung jury.. The defence has finished on a high with an excellent expert witness, and then a great character witness in John Marvin... . There's no proof at all that Alex done it, altho' I think most people realise he must have.. and I really believe the jury will find him not guilty on these murder charges. I'll be surprised if they don't..but as Gigi said above.. he's got all the fraud charges to come yet in a different trial so he's going down for a long time..anyway

Maybe they do it a little differently there. But in every state, jurors can request at least specific parts of the transcripts, like to check dates or times or how a witness worded a certain answer, or everything, etc.
yes I'm talking about the trial in NC.. specifically. The court reporters say that there's to be no transcripts.. they all seem very surprised about it, as they would be.. particualrly as there has been no notes been taken.. I want to know why the no notes ruling was given, no-one seems to know..
