Dishes, glasses, pots, pans etc.

I had a dishwasher in my house but since I retired to the cabin I no longer have one. I would use one if I had it but it is not difficult to handwash for one person. I fill the sink with water as hot as I can get it and let them soak until the water cools enough I can put my hands in it. At that point it normally only takes a quick wipe with the sponge and rinse.

Do not know where you are but retiring to a small peaceful cabin sounds like a wonderful thing to enjoy retirement.

I often fill the sink with hot soapy water for pots and pans. I was also the person who sprinkled clothes with water, rolled up and set aside for ironing. Both of those tasks did not require thought, it was just a quiet time for me. Those simple tasks kept me grounded, there was just the silence, the fact I knew I was taking care of my family.

I've never had a dishwasher... ever. And I'm perfectly fine with that. (y)
There are just two people in this house, why would we want a dishwasher? Besides, we have a washing machine that I have not the slightest idea how to use, same with the tumble drier, the dishwasher would no doubt not look out of place on the bridge of the star ship Enterprise, I would have difficulty with that too. I mean, I'm clueless, there's a thread about internet speeds, what's that all about?

We've had a dishwasher for many years. We don't wash everything in it as not everything is suitable for machine washing. We'd be reluctant to do without one, and recently bought a new Bosch dishwasher to replace our old 'Rangemaster' model that died after 14 years. It's fantastic and virtually silent. We're fortunate to live in a very soft water area, so no softener needed.

One thing is that to make best use of it, we have twice the cutlery, glasses and plates that we need, so that we can have virtually full loads for every wash (usually every 2 days).

Hand, all my life!

I have heard that dishwashers might be guilty of helping
to cause allergies, such as nut ones, they produce sterile
crockery and cutlery, every wash, so that children's immune
system, never gets to experience germs, when they are young.

Never had or wanted a dishwasher….as I gather, everyone who uses them ,washes them first anyway, what a waste of time……most of my friends just use them as a storage cupboard, being to lazy to empty them…..I had a very good dishwasher once, but sadly he can’t do it anymore …..
Maybe misunderstood not pre washing just rinsing off any left over food or sauces that may cling. Most if not all dishwashers have a screen filter to screen food particles form being picked up by the pumping system.

Really hot water plus hot air dry makes me more comfortable that whatever is washed has less bacteria clinging to the surface.

Reading this reminded me of when I was about 10yrs old. My older sister and I had the job of doing the dishes. We would fight every night while doing the dishes. If she would wash them I would complain that she didn't rinse them well enough. When I would wash them she would complain I would take too long. My Dad bought a dishwasher to shut us up. Of course when I got married and we got our own house we bought a dishwasher. I feel that the dishwasher really gets the dishes clean.

You're right about being "too clean" and lacking immunity, but children will pick up germs from all sorts of areas and blaming dishwashers is a bit OTT. I suspect you do a pretty good job washing dishes by hand and they end up clean. I'm sure you wouldn't want your dishes and cutlery to have germs?

Dishwasher for us!! I have had a dishwasher for the past 45 years. My children are 3 years apart & there were several things that I wanted before we had the second child and one of them was a dishwasher! My first 2 were portable dishwashers. When we bought our home 25 years ago there was a built in one here & when that stopped we replaced it with a KitchenAid one that is great. I think we spent more on that than our washer & dryer!! It is just the 2 of us here, but we run it about 6 out of 7 days. We do a lot of cooking & baking here!! I think everyone has items they can't do without & this is one of mine.
