Should Daylight Savings Time be ended?

During the energy crisis (1973), Congress enacted permanent DST in the US. Although Americans overwhelmingly supported the idea, when we were confronted with waking up in the pitch dark and having children wait at bus stops in the dark, we started to see it differently.

Due to overwhelming public dissatisfaction with very dark winter mornings, the law was repealed in less than a year.

I was puzzled by that information @StarSong ... where was I when this happened? .. I don't remember that at all.

Oh yes! ... In Arizona, where we thumbed our noses at time changes ....:ROFLMAO: .. Loved Arizona!!

Given that it was 50 years ago and only lasted one winter, most people don't remember it at all. I had only a vague recollection and had to look it up to verify.

Thanks for the memory jog, I had forgotten about that, but I remember the part about little kids wandering around in the dark on their way to school. I suppose our politicians don't remember that either, or they don't care. Something we don't know about must be pushing this DST legislation. And I believe I know what's behind it. It's corporate flashlight manufacturers and the companies that manufacture Duracell Batteries.

Of course. It is a stupid idea. Schools and everyone else can just adjust their opening and closing hours when the arrival of darkness changes.

I've already consider this, but doesn't that just bring us back to where we were in the beginning? Politicians will say we must now go do Double Daylight Savings Time (DDST), because we need it to stay lighter in what is now the new evening.

Time is integral to our biological rhythms. Each time there is a time change, I have to gradually adapt my sleeping time to accommodate the change, or else I get sick! I would prefer there was no time change. When we had Zoom meetings, and some of our members were in different time zones, I learned that they did not all change the time on the same day as we did in the US. It gets chaotic some time.

Different time zones are with us to stay, due to geography. The continental US has 4 different zones, plus 5 or 6 if you include Alaska and Hawaii. Can't be helped, it's a nuisance, but when traveling we all adjust.

But setting clocks backward and forward twice a year is an unnecessary chore, and creates havoc with newborn babies, farm animals, and even many grownup people. Why do we keep doing it? Everybody seems to hate it.

But at least I have fewer clocks to mess around with. Most of my clocks are now digital, and automatically adjust themselves. But I always forget to change my wristwatch.

Here's an idea. Just go back to standard time so children don't have to go to school in the dark, but then everyday at noon we set clocks ahead one hour for daylight savings. Now when school lets out at 3:00PM the children will have one extra hour for homework, and we get more light in the evening. Then every day at midnight we turn the clocks back to standard time, so children will have plenty of light in the morning.

Do most people realize that most of the year is spent in DST.

Daylight Saving time 2021 ended Nov 7th and resumes March 13 2022. We only spend 4 months and one week in Standard time.
That was GWB's greatest accomplishment... extending DST.

Its the same in the UK Sunny and its about time it was scrapped.
It was worse still in this country during the war because it was two hours instead of one.
This was to help regarding the bombing raids so that we had extra daylight and any enemy planes could be seen.
We only had about 4 hours of darkness and it was what was known as Double British Summertime.
It played havoc with the body clock and we were all glad when it finally finished, but we still have the same system as yours.

I'm all for that!
I wish school started later, too. Like, about 10am. But most working parents have to be at their jobs by 7 or 8 am.

Perfection would be if families could live on 1 parent's wages. In fact, I'm sure we'd have a healthier society if only 1 parent had to go to work and the other could work at home, or both parents could work at home and at least one of them had flexible hours.

I'm saying I wish this was custom, or tradition, or even rule of law.

I am not a morning person so I favor the DST. Schools can change their opening times and people can adjust. Life is about adjusting to various changes throughout
But isn't it a whole lot easier to just set the clock forward or back?
