This photo captured an Italian woman curiously examining the kilt of a Scottish soldier. It was taken near the Coliseum, right after the liberation of Rome in 1944.

Hitler has just announced that he had ordered all troops to withdraw from Rome, so people took to the street to celebrate. All the shops in the city were closed and the crowd was hurling flowers at passing vehicles. While all this happened, one Italian woman was curious when she encountered for the first time men wearing kilts.
