Well, several years worth of vision dr saying "you are growing some cataracts" I went today and was told "Its time". So I have to go see an eye surgeon to arrainge to get them out. I have been told it is a simple procedure, so there is that. I had a feeling something was up as my eyesight was feeling off,

I'm waiting for my appointment for my second eye surgery. Cataracts are sneaky, they slowly make your vision a little off but at some point, it is obvious that it is time. Do some online research about the type of lens to get since some are expensive while the cheaper single vision are what Medicare usually pays for. Also, have your doctor carefully explain your options since you don't want to have a redo.

I have a friend who is a retired LPN. I am going to ask if she will come to my first appointment with me

I hope you have transport and didn't have to scramble like I did.

It was simple. I didn't even feel sleepy after the twilight medication. But I was awake more the second surgery. I don't think that IV was in properly. For some reason she had trouble.

I hope you get it over with soon. I didn't get the correcting lenses put in. My insurance didn't cover it. I don't know if any do.

I've had both eyes done but I still wear glasses.

I have been longsighted since my teens and have needed reading glasses. My options for the implant were to decide whether I wanted to see well in the distance without glasses or to be able to read without glasses. I chose the former because it means that I can drive a car without wearing glasses. It also means I can buy sunglasses without having to have prescription lenses.

After trying to get along with just reading glasses I decided that this is inconvenient because I was always hunting for my reading specs when I needed them. I now have multifocals on all the time except when I want to thread a sewing needle. That's when I use the reading glasses.

These decisions are minor compared to the decision to either accept creeping blindness or to do something about it.

Marie, good luck with your cataract surgery, I don't think you'll regret it. I had both eyes done in late March, a week apart. My vision is much brighter now, and I had distance lenses put in, I paid out of pocket because my Kaiser Permanente doctors refused to even let me see an Ophthalmologist until they decided my cataracts were ready. Well, my vision was dimming rapidly and I took action on my own.

My vision is still a bit blurry, but I also have Macular Degeneration going on. In May my surgeon will prescribe new glasses for me, so hoping my vision will be sharper and clearer...we'll see.

The procedure was quick and painless for me. My husband has been putting my drops in for me, so that's a big help. Will be done with all of that by the end of April. Nice if you have someone there to help you out a bit during recovery.

I don't know if this is related, but I went for an evaluation for Crystal Lens surgery many years ago. My close-up vision started going in my 40's and now my distance vision is somewhat blurred. I wear my glasses when I need to, but I could literally pass someone I know and not realize it without my glasses on. The doctor told me I wasn't a candidate for Crystal Lens because apparently they shave down the cornea to implant the lens and he said my curvature would just return again.

My mother had cataract surgery and it was a breeze.

SeaBreeze raises an important point.

Occular implants will not correct every possible eye problem.

Glaucoma or macular degeneration may also be present. In such circumstances the benefit of cataract surgery will be lessened depending on the severity of the other conditions.
Also, my right eye has worse vision than my left. The implants for distance, as I understand are a basic prescription, not personalized for the patient, so I can see a bit more clearly with my left eye. I expected that, and if I get prescription glasses for distance in May, and am happy with the improvement, I will also get sunglasses with that prescription. So far with Kaiser, I have not be satisfied with any glasses that they gave me over the years.

They made it clear to me that the cataract surgery would only improve my sight so much, due to the macular degeneration. But at home and in stores, the lighting was very dim, now much better, although not perfect. With my aging eyes, I'll take what I can get, LOL.

I have early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). My eye doctor recommended Macuhealth to slow the deterioration, so I've been taking them. I think they're helping, but that could be psychosomatic since they cost $75 a bottle.
I understand the FDA recently approved an injection for Dry Macular Degeneration, which is what I have. They had one for Wet for years, I guess wet is when bleeding is involved.

Anyhoo, when they are available for patients, which may be a month or two, I will try to get them. They don't cure, but are supposed to slow down the progression. Left untreated, it only gets worse. I think any eye supplement is helpful, they are pricey though.

In a previous thread..most everyone gave positive results.
You will be fine.
Everyone is nervous about it...but they (med. Staff) realize this..and are very Good/kind about it.
It's..like..become an every day thing.
Good Luck, though 🤗

Thanks. I am officially not really worried. Was just surprised at the diagnosis, though thinking back I remember being told I was a candidate for maybe getting them
I know you're not really worried Marie. You have shown yourself to be a very strong woman who is well-grounded. I will be thinking of you when you have your surgeries, I think all will be just fine....hugs.
