If I get an angry emoji I figure it is because I am being an a-hole. Getting a WOW can mean a lot of things, but I figure it's because I am being an a-hole. I have gotten texts that were just flowers, butterflies, and hearts. I figure it's because I'm an a-hole and the person doesn't really want me to text them back, sort of like THE END to this conversation.

I agree with you;
Yet, sometimes we honestly do have limited energy for wording a response, and want to at least show the poster that we have read their post, and do offer our listening, and some support.

Totally agree with that and emojis have their place and are so useful for what you've just mentioned! I do love them.

However, I feel I lean on them a bit too much over time and my writing gets lazy as a result so must declare an occasional moratorium on my emoji use so as to avoid the atrophying of my written communication muscles.

That’s a good point. I think I have used emojis to end conversations even if it is a good conversation just because I can’t think of anything else to say, and I need to go do something else.

I just realized (from reading this thread!)
that I sometimes think that I should know what someone else meant by the emoji they chose to reply to a post of mine,
But there actually is no way I could know!!

The time it matters to me is when there was something I'm not sure about why an "anger" reponse was given. Most times I let it go, but I don't want to hurt feelings or make someone angry without wanting to find out why.

No there’s not but this thread has made me realize that the standard blue emoji is probably the safest if unsure.

Here's another emoji interpretation..... I have always thought it was praying hands. Recently I was told its a high five. If you look at it, it could be either one. Again, interpretation.

Seriously? That's a high five? I've always interpreted it as a pleading gesture.

Sometimes people will attach the emoji to my posts, I can't tell if they are reacting to the topic or if they hate my guts.

Yes, this is the one I can't decipher. Are they angry that something happened, or angry at me because I wrote about it?

I only use the blue "thumbs up." If I want to send a hug, laughter, or other reaction, I use words.

I used to think the angry face meant the person was angry at me but now I’m realizing that usually they add that in response to the topic posted, not me in general. If I’m writing about some angry driver that cut me off I might get a few emojis. Then again sometimes they probably ARE angry at me but I’m ‘also’ learning that I can’t please everyone

I am also sometimes confused if by using an angry emoji am I angry at the writer or angry in agreement with the writer.

See, I know right? I've used it, but have had to resist the compulsion to attach a note explaining that I'm simply disagreeing with the post, not disliking the author.

I'm trying to remember when I've used "wow" and for what reasons. As far as I recall now, it's always or almost always saying "amazing!" or "incredible" for the subject being discussed ... I've never used it for "I can't believe you said that!" against the poster. (At least not that I remember.)

I use the Wow to express surprise or amazement at the post contents. Simple as that. Not keen on the Angry emoji at all, either giving it or receiving it. I much prefer a smooth flow of posts without any aggro

I use the surprise emoji for those who write things like ‘I fell and broke my ankle,’ or ‘ someone just got shot for turning around in someone’s driveway. I might even use the angry emoji and notice many others have also. I don’t look at that as aggressive. I view that as anger towards the topic. Most times I use the emoji is to convey surprise but now that I see such indifference to it I shall refrain from using it.

Since they mean different things to different people maybe not using emojis would be best. There's really no way to avoid hurting the feelings of some one who sees a particular emoji differently than you do.

I also would like to see other emojis available. The topic has come up a number of times. Having other emojis to choose from would certainly help with what you're trying to express.

I have always used in it in a good way.........like "awesome" or meaning something like that. Now reading this thread, I will stop using it since people might think I am not using it in the way I intended.
