Another Shooting

When I was a child, no thought ever crossed my mind about being shot dead in school. Nope, back then we practiced duck-and-cover drills in the thought that the Soviets might come to nuke us. Today, “active shooter” drills have replaced this. The unthinkable has become all too commonplace, and gun violence is the leading cause of child death.

There’s a certain amount of fatalism required for living in contemporary America where you realize that you are never completely safe anywhere, and might perhaps be gunned down as you shop, view a movie, or even attend a house of worship. That’s assuming of course that you aren’t mowed down by speeders on the roadway! Pray that you’re not in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I kinda miss the days when I was only afraid of the Soviets rather than domestic terrorists and garden-variety gun nuts…
Thoughts of being shot enter my mind every now and then at the gym. If a shooter came through the front door, he would have all but one exit covered. The swift or most athletic in the aerobics/weight room would trample each other trying to run out a side exit. Don't know how much good running would do with an AK-47 or AR-15 spraying the room.

Gunman in Texas mall shooting may have had neo-Nazi beliefs

ALLEN, Tex. — The gunman who opened fire on an outlet mall in a Dallas suburb Saturday, killing at least eight people, was a man in his early 30s who may have had white supremacist or neo-Nazi beliefs, people familiar with the investigation said Sunday.

Mauricio Garcia, a local resident, had multiple weapons on him and in his nearby car, said people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe.

Authorities have not released a motive, but a patch on his chest said “RWDS,” an acronym that stands for Right Wing Death Squad, according to people familiar with the investigation. The phrase is popular among right wing extremists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they said. In addition to the weapons found on his body, investigators found another five guns inside his car nearby, these people said.

Allen, Texas mall shooter was removed from Army over mental health concerns: law enforcement sources

In addition to the insignia on the shooter's equipment that suggested a right-wing extremist ideology, investigators have found social media accounts connected to the shooter that reveal hundreds of postings and images, including writings with racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist rhetoric, neo-Nazi material and material espousing the supremacy of the white race.

CNN spoke with neighbors who witnessed FBI and police at a home of an address that matches Garcia's parents Saturday night. They arrived there about an hour after the shooting and blocked off the street for several hours, neighbors said.

Garcia had been living in some form of transient lodging, according to the law enforcement source. Law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News that preliminary information developed in the probe indicates that the shooter was in the U.S. Army in 2008 and was "removed due to mental health concerns."

I think there is plenty of blame to spread around ........
guns / car / knives or any other tool put in the hands of someone with mental health issues or often drug or alcohol issues as well.

I have seen interviews and statements from shooters ....... that thought people could be shot.............then it is like next life on a video game and they get up no harm. That show the continual immaturity in the world.
so far Almost all suggested "fixes" have flaws or unmanageable solutions that go round and round with no progress cause hard to use an item for campaigns if they actually find workable solutions.

Gun violence in the US is a perpetual epidemic. Furthermore, according to the FBI, white supremacists and far-right extremists are the most lethal domestic terrorism threat.

That was about 15 years ago so he must have purchased some of those firearms since then and to do so, he must have passed a background check. Even though it was known that he was a risk, he was still able to acquire all those guns and ammo.

How long does it take a person to SNAP??...... watch any true crime / dateline type show some people expressed real concerns over people and are told UNTIL something happens police cannot watch everyone.
Does anyone with help recover from mental illness?? If not why would anyone seek treatment if it will be a disqualifying move not only in buying gun but any other concern where mental health could factor.

Who is taking red flag reports?? IF investigated at all .... ( FL) Parkland High school shooter had many run ins with Law ......if that NOT a red flag what is? Reality is background checks based on applicant answering honestly .... ( hs shooter in my state took dad's gun .. dad lied on application) ............. checks are completed in about 10 days and many states have backlog of information NOT entered in federal database some a year old....some do not participate in federal system for checks.

No one knows the motivation / the mental state of the person or what they did or did not believe in . ...... those are just all that is needed for the high court of Social Media.......to rile up the masses

15 years ago a person was discharged from Army for concerns that is more fodder for media .......not necessarily a contributing fact .........

Many gun laws / checks like this are completely misunderstood by some people who think applications and background items stop everyone or red flag items are foolproof etc.
What about if a person bought years ago and then had a mental break ? One size fits all rules are a pipe dream

This is what an AR-15 can do to a person...

Steven Spainhouer’s son worked at the H & M at the Allen, Texas outlet mall and called his father Saturday night when the shooting started. Spainhouer raced to the scene and arrived before the first responders. And here is the sight that greeted him: “The first girl I walked up to was crouched down covering her head in the bushes, so I felt for a pulse, pulled her head to the side, and she had no face.”

It appears sometimes true that these murderers hold extremist political views.

However I wonder what the connection is. Are deranged people both more likely to adopt crazy beliefs and commit murder. I know sometimes these beliefs reinforce the validity of the murders, but do they cause them? Or are the beliefs just something the murderer finds that is consistent with their craziness.

This isn't just an academic question, I think better understanding of these people might help us reduce some of this carnage...
I'll have to admit this makes me ashamed to be a Texan
It shouldn't, this isn't you and I am sure you have done nothing to cause this. Only an exceedingly small fraction of Texans commit murder, just hope we can figure out how to make it even smaller.

With almost everyone here being against the NRA, it would be a waste of time to try to convince anyone or everyone why the NRA bears no responsibility for these mass shootings. But, for now, there is no evidence that the NRA has played any cause into these shootings. If the NRA could be proven to share in some of the responsibility, I am fairly sure that the NRA would have been made to change some of their principles. According to the constitution, they can’t be shut down, but they can be made to keep their principles inline with any U.S. laws.

Apparently, this guy was a member of a neo-nazi cult. Plus, obviously a raving lunatic. And that's the problem. Guns are available to anybody.

The NRA bears much of the responsibility for the deadly shootings here in America — especially for the gun culture so prevalent in society today. They've put a tremendous amount of money into lobbying against gun control measures, such as background checks and bans on assault weapons, which have made it impossible to pass gun control measures that could help to reduce gun violence.

The NRA's marketing campaigns glorify violence with some of it directed towards children, all under the guise of protecting the 2nd Amendment rights of its members. They are largely responsible for perverting the true and original meaning of the 2nd Amendment.

I keep calling the lobbyists the bribers of your politicians from both parties! The politicians have to stop taking those bribes from the NRA, and Americans need to let the politicians know they won't vote for anyone taking those bribes!

good idea that politicians quit taking bribes (aka donations) from all lobbyists ........ period
vote for best interest of the majority ....
only way to achieve that now would be to term limit them takes the incentive out of propping up a career politicians.

I briefly caught a US film last night - could have been in b/w not sure now title "The Wild Bunch" guess you know whats coming next ?

"An aging group of outlaws look for one last score as the 'traditional' America West is disappearing around them" - and this must have been set in the 1800's perhaps - this looked more like the real wild west. More graphic than some of the films I saw as a kid at the saturday matinee and from which we would emerge on a saturday afternoon - racing home with imaginary blazing guns blasting away. We were being taught about guns and how to use them then but fortunately it was in UK and the rest is history?

I think there was another thread in which questions were asked about how a Hispanic man could be part of a Neo-Nazi group. Here are the sad facts.

The rise of white nationalist Hispanics

Nick Fuentes, identified as a "white supremacist" in Justice Department filings, made headlines last week for hosting a white nationalist conference in Florida. His father is also half Mexican American.

The big picture: Fuentes is part of a small but increasingly visible number of far-right provocateurs with Hispanic backgrounds who spread racist, antisemitic messages.

Driving the news: Cuban American Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, a group the Anti-Defamation League calls an extremist group with a violent agenda, was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

What they're saying: Experts tell Axios far-right extremism within the Latino community stems from three sources: Hispanic Americans who identify as white; the spread of online misinformation; and lingering anti-Black, antisemitic views among U.S. Latinos that are rarely openly discussed.
