You @PeppermentPatty seemed satisfied with my later explanation, but reading this exchange months later, I'm a little embarrassed . I used too much poetic license that demeans theoretical physicists, who resemble prophets only in that they make predictions. They differ in that their predictions are given as theories (explanations that fit all known observations of a particular phenomenon that are malleable and are open to refinement or being discarded when and if new information becomes available that doesn't fit with theory).Huh? You lost me!![]()
Prophets are usually seen has having the final word. When new information invalidates the prophesy, followers sometimes say, "Well, he didn't really mean that." Others will claim, "No, he meant exactly that, and things that negate the prophesy are works of the devil," or some similar apology.
