I play chess at Chess.com for 3 to 4 HOURS EVERY DAY. It exercises the brain and PREVENTS dementia. I'm 88 and have been doing that activity for 15 years now. It really works. Its the best exercise for the brain and keeps one's thoughts organized and RETAINED!!

It does NOT matter if you win or lose. Its the exercise PARTICULAR FOR brain strength.

Oh good! My son is a chess lover. He taught his youngest son to play when he was about 10 years old. He's been asking to teach me how to play for the last couple of weeks. Actually we made a deal...if he did something for me that I didn't want to do, I had to learn to play chess. I agreed to learn but we've had very busy schedules, so haven't had time to sit down yet. I even went on YouTube to get some basic information about how to play the game. I'm all for doing whatever I can to stave off dementia because as I mentioned in a couple of other posts, my sister was diagnosed and I am seeing the progression of the disease.

I don't believe there is reliable data that chess prevents dementia. But I don't see any reason why you shouldn't keep up your cognitive skills with chess, online games, crosswords, etc.
I haven't seen evidence that the game prevents dementia either, but there is evidence that is can lower the odds (as well as doing many other good things for the brain):

"Chess may offer protection against the development of dementia
In a 2019 research review, scientists found that the complex mental flexibility chess demands could help protect older people from dementia.

Researchers found evidence that the game, which challenges memory, calculation, visual-spatial skills, and critical thinking abilities, may help reduce cognitive decline and postpone the effects of dementia as you age

By the way, my Geriatrician diagnosed me with "mild cognitive impairment." I am 88. It is almost a certainty that without 4 hours of chess playing daily I would have had at least "moderate cognitive impairment by this time.

"may help reduce cognitive decline and postpone the effects of dementia as you age" is not quite the same as " PREVENTS dementia." Nevertheless, it's always good to keep the "little grey cells" exercised. I occasionally revisit old maths papers.

Recently, there was an outcry in some Scottish schools that a question in a 'Seniors' maths exam was too hard. I had a quick look and my 72 year old brain completed it in under 5 mins (without a calculator, smart phone etc..). It was probably about the top of 'O' lever maths standard.

I take Lion's Mane 4X plus another supplement called Phosphatidyl Serine 100 mg that aids the brain in receiving messages. I can't really explain it. I went to Fountain of Health and these two together will help with recall and in playing chess.
