Man arrested after shooting at children playing hide-and-seek on his property; 14-year-old girl hurt

The "All Inclusive Society" is a wonderful idea. Actually, it is a nice dream. The same as every Christmas we hear the same old, "Peace on Earth and Good Will to All Men." The Hippies tried it very much in the 1960s with the pot smoking and tuning out our society. Well, you don't have to looks very far to find out that there is absolutely no "peace on earth" and "Good Will" is often pretty hard to find.

Just check the news everyday and you will find that there are bombings, murders and violence all over the place. The more people we have on this planet and the more we try to force them to be together, the more there will be trouble. I don't know what the solution is and I believe we are still very far from this "all inclusive" and "lovely-dovey" society.

Put your Russians and Ukrainians together and you got trouble!
Put your Moslems and Hindus together and you got trouble!
Put your Jew and Moslem together and you got trouble.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
@Packerjohn I guess we have different definitions of what constitutes an "all inclusive society." What you are speaking about is a completely different matter in my eyes. You are talking about a general increase of violence caused world wide by over population plus the age old strife between various religions. Canada is certainly not in danger of that with our 40+ million. And we are trying our best to prove to the world that people of all customs, colours and religions can nevertheless live harmoniously together! Some rednecks I spoke about earlier cannot tolerate the loss of a "white" society but the majority of Canadians live happily with the cultural mosaic we are trying to create!

Ask Japan. They've done it. Read all about it.

Japan has almost completely eliminated gun deaths — here's how > https://www.businessinsider.com/gun...completely-eliminated-gun-deaths-2017-10?op=1

Excerpt from the article:

"A recent spate of mass shootings has prompted intensified discussions around gun control in the US.

On Saturday, four people were killed and 32 were injured in a shooting in Dadeville, Alabama, during a 16th birthday party. Last month, a 28-year-old woman opened fire at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, killing three elementary school students and three adult staff members, according to police.

The attacks come on the heels of several other mass shootings in the past year, including at a Fourth of July parade in Illinois, in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

There was 17 mass shooting this year, with 88 people killed, according to The Associated Press.

One of the biggest questions being asked: How does the US prevent this from happening over and over again?

Although the US has no exact counterpart elsewhere in the world, some countries have taken steps that can provide a window into what successful gun control looks like. Japan, a country of 127 million people and yearly gun deaths rarely totaling more than 10, is one such country.

"Ever since guns entered the country, Japan has always had strict gun laws," Iain Overton, executive director of Action on Armed Violence, a British advocacy group, told the BBC. "They are the first nation to impose gun laws in the whole world, and I think it laid down a bedrock saying that guns really don't play a part in civilian society."

Japan is a country with regulations upon regulations

"Japan's success in curbing gun deaths is intimately linked with its history. Following World War II, pacifism emerged as one of the dominant philosophies in the country. Police only started carrying firearms after American troops made them, in 1946, for the sake of security. It's also written into Japanese law, as of 1958, that "no person shall possess a firearm or firearms or a sword or swords."

"The government has since loosened the law, but the fact Japan enacted gun control from the stance of prohibition is important. (It's also one of the main factors separating Japan from the US, where the Second Amendment broadly permits people to own guns.)

If Japanese people want to own a gun, they must attend an all-day class, pass a written test, and achieve at least 95% accuracy during a shooting-range test. Then they have to pass a mental-health evaluation, which takes place at a hospital, and pass a background check, in which the government digs into their criminal record and interviews friends and family. They can only buy shotguns and air rifles — no handguns — and every three years they must retake the class and initial exam."

Bella ✌️
I wonder where the author come up with 17 mass shootings (as of the article in April)? According to news reports I'm seeing there have been 199 mass shootings in the U.S. as of a couple of days ago. The U.S. would do good to imitate the models of programs other countries have instituted to combat social issues.

The same could once have been said about Irish, or Italians, or French or Germans or most any group with another. I'd like to think we are getting better at getting along...

We have a sign in our garden, "No spiders or Visigoths" worked pretty well on the Visigoths so far... Or so I think, not really sure how to spot one.

To tie the Visigoths in with the Nazis in this clip doesn't do much good to improve someone's well-being after they have tried to live with the shame for 75 years!

I don't know how they came up with that particular number of US mass shootings for this article. My point in posting the article was to show how Japan has dealt with gun ownership.

Not sure what you mean. Did you see the movie? As I understood it this scene was to belittle the Nazi anti-Jewish polices. Not to associate them with Visigoths.
No, I never saw the movie, but the first thing I saw in the clip was marching German troups! We've had generations of Germans trying to live down the Holocaust and attempting to make reparations to Israel. The shop keeper was obviously Jewish. On the other hand I am also fiercely proud of my heritage, so was overly sensitive to your Visigoth because it seemed to equate Visigoth = Nazi!

I don't think that was the intent at all. But apologize if it insulted anyway.

The shop keeper was Jewish and was trying to make light of the Nazi's anti-Jewish polices to his son. You should see the movie, it was a good one. Life Is Beautiful https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_Is_Beautiful

Are you a descendant of the Visigoths?

i read a followup and this all happened ..... teens playing hide and seek at 1 am
that seems to add to a defense as i would be more worried about people running around my house at 1 am

I can see that, I might be worried too. However, it would take a lot more than just running around before I considered shooting. I'd sure call the police first... Do we know did the shooter call the police?

We're probably mongrels after the Voelkerwanderungen, but yes, Germans can claim descent from the Visigoths! But so can most Europeans! If you or your family didn't originate in Eastern Europe, so are you most likely! I also claim Celtic blood in a facetious way. Sorry I overreacted! It was a gut reaction because German schools after the war instilled a deep sense of guilt in us about the Holocaust to make sure it would never happen again, and mine and following generations have carried it around with us. It's a trigger!

That makes sense, and be assured I don't hold you or any other younger Germans any more responsible for what Hitler and the Nazis did than I do myself for the slaves my ancestors owned.

I think remembering the Holocaust is important in part because the Germans of that time were so much like us. In fact many of us have German ancestry. That's different from some of the third world atrocities, or the older ones here, easier to relate to. The message ought to be that if it could happen in Germany it could happen anywhere. I also think its important to remember things like our own history of slavery and treatment of the Native Americans. Not that we should feel guilty, but to keep it from happening again.

And I kind of like the idea of being part Visigoth, maybe the next time I fill out one of those forms asking for race I'll write that in.

@Alligatorob One of your sentences struck me because I believe it despite my guilt:

"The message ought to be that if it could happen in Germany it could happen anywhere."

Regrettably after living 87 years and seeing what happens when a society breaks down, Rwanda comes to mind, for one, I completely agree. It sounds so cynical but I believe that given the right (or wrong) circumstances, in all too many the inner beast gets unleashed, turning normally decent people into monsters.

Put the wrong man in charge, surround him with his private army, and all too many follow like puppets. I always tell my daughters: Be glad that we have law and order in this country! It may be a bit boring to some, but humanity has seen too often what happens if the social order breaks down! You get the brutal beasts and along with that curse, the many who fear for the lives of their families if they don't go along!
