It may be a rumor but I heard our walmart is going to all self checkouts!

Now this looks better than scanning everything at the end of shopping.
Yes it is much better, because it's a real pain having to take all the shopping back out of the trolley, then have to pack it all back into the bags .. so this way you put your bags in the trolley ..like this
trolley-bags-reusable-shopping-bags-express-pastel-4-pack-2.jpg
a scan each item as you pick it off the shlef, add it to your bags.. and it's all you need to do. No taking it all out to put it on a conveyor belt, or to scan at a self service ill which has a tiny little space.. and then straight into the car..

Self checkout bothered me at first, but now I prefer it. There's always an associate nearby if there's an issue, but I've had very few times I've needed help over the years.
The trouble with most supermarkets in the UK is there's only usually one assistant at the self checkouts, for maybe up to 20 tills.. and so if we have a problem with an item, we have to wait while they're dealing with other people.

In a local little store, it's different because there's not the huge smount of people checking out at the same time.. but in the suoermarket it can take much longer using self checkout tills if it's very busy and we have to wait for things like alcohol to be checked .. or if there;s a glitch to be cleared..

Most of my shopping is small quantities so I prefer self-checkout now. The last two times I went through with a cashier at Walmart she made me bag my own groceries. I don’t want to deal with a miserable person. They always have 2 or 3 clerks on both side of the self-check areas; they’re always friendly.
LOL..in the UK, we all have to Bag our own groceries.. always have had.... The cashier will help if you ask... and on the odd occasion a Cashier might ask if you need help, but most people don't accept because it would hold up the Queue..

I don’t mind the self-checkout at Walmart if I only have a few items. Trouble is, if you buy something like a petroleum product or an OTC drug with the potential for abuse, that triggers the checkout machine to demand cashier approval. The bored matron then comes over, looks at me, and asks me with a straight face if I’m 21 years old or over.- - Hilarity ensues! When the snickering is over, the cashier approves the transaction, and I’m on my merry way… 😸

🤭 That happened to me about two years ago, too... "I'll have to check your ID." "Okay, why's that?" "I need to see ID that the buyer is over 21." "You can't tell that by looking me? Should I be flattered?" "It's our policy.":rolleyes:

If someone who looks over 70 or 80 is buying a six pack of beer, you'd think the employee would be trusted enough by the store to key in "over 21" without having to ask. But, the legal system such as it is....

I use self checkout because I have two orders and don't want to hold up the line at the cashier. I haven't used the cashier for a couple of years. Tried it once in between and cashier treated me like a child. I went back to self checkout and get the help I need without the attitude.

Going to our Walmart in the early off peak hours means you have no choice but to use self checkout. They simply do not have a cashier available.

That's the situation here too. Only self-checkout available most of the time.
I didn't like it at first, but no issues with it anymore.

had a part time job there when they first started self check.they had me there to check receipts when they notified me to do so.you would not be believe the stealing that goes on.they only catch a fraction of the stealing that goes on.

I can't stand others bagging my groceries. I make my own bags and they are different sizes. I know what I want to put in what bag, heavy stuff in smaller bags, bread, light stuff in the bigger bags. Cold together. Once I had some twit bagger trying to stuff a pizza box into my smallest bag while there were bigger bags to use.

I'm with you on unfriendly cashiers or ones that talk to someone else, carrying on a whole conversation. WINCO Foods employees are nice and it's bag yourself only there. Also the Grocery Outlet is always friendly.

Not future stores... Current stores.

Almost all of our supermarkets here have that facility already... you take a scanning gun as you walk into the store, by scanning your Credit or debit card.. ..and what happens once you finish your shopping, which is all packed in your bags already , you just go through a Coral type of area before leaving the store.. and you just pay at a machine. No need to take any shopping out.

Here's an example..this is 4 years old and almost every supermarket has this now.. and even more modernised since this Video was made.. but it's a very popular way to shop..

That is all very well for able bodied people.
I for one with nerve damage and my right hand minus the thumb would never be able to handle the shopping and the scanning of each item with the gun machine.
I suppose eventually I will be forced to order on line which I am loth to do as I still like to go out and pick what I need as well as some browsing around other non basic items. I usually come out with more than I went in for.

With an aging population they are in line to lose a lot of business

I read an article that said when (not if) Walmart goes to self service exclusively, they will still have 1 or 2 lines open for the disabled. I think legally they have to make the stores handicapped assessible.

Mizmo..you only need one good hand. You pick up the item from the shelf , you put it in your bag in your trolley, and then you scan the barcode.. Done.. :D(y)

same thing happens here... but also if the store cashier on the manned checkout is under 21 she has to buzz for a supervisor to allow her to scan the item..

That would depend on how 'good' the hand is and which hand.
In my case left hand which is not the same as a good right hand. Also I need two hands to get large items like cereal boxes from shelf etc., in which case one has to put the scanner down somewhere safe. I know my left hand could never cope with that scanner.
Also consider the many people who have arthritis in hands as they age.
As I said, not a good thing for later year seniors and some disabled people.

When I win the lottery I shall have a maid , housekeeper and private limo service.....oh and private plane so that I can pop over the pond now and again and have tea with you.

Overall I have been very happy with online shopping. I rotate through 3 grocery chains to get my favorites but I would really like to try the scanning gun but I haven't found a store that has it yet by searching for one online. I know Kroger has them in some stores so I might try our newest one which is pretty close to me. I have avoided it since my injury because it is so huge, sort on the line of a Walmart for variety.

I'm not worried about the cashiers. There is a real shortage of workers here so I'm sure they can get other jobs. The stores have had to hire people for those of us who use pickup and they are doing a huge business that way. I think it's a wonderful service for those who are handicapped. A lot of younger busy people use it too now. Everything that happens in business is not about greed. A lot of it is about the ways that people want to shop changing.

Hollydolly, I already have a set of those bags that fit in a shopping cart like your picture. I've had them for years and never used them. I'm not sure where I got them now. This is what comes of never throwing anything out because you might need it sometime. 😄

The handle of the trolley has a place where the scanning gun fits into.. also Miz..don't forget I have Osteoarthritis in both hands.. but believe me they're very easy to use.. you don't even have to use a trigger.. you just hover the item under the gun ..or hold the gun in your hand and hover it over the bar-code of the package.. no pain..

I prefer visiting with "Julie" at checkout, she provides info on sales or items we purchased that may have been a buy one, get one free, things like that, the personal touch you won't get from Fred (Frigging ridiculous electronic device). So, no, self checkout doesn't work for me. Provide a human cashier or I take my business to a business that will provide one. Don...
