How are we different ?

Suppose we were all on airline going somewhere, maybe west. we crash and the closes land is an uninhabited island. How long would it take before all the differences disappeared and we all worked together ???? This is one thing that sticks in the mind of people who served their country. There was a monument in their lives when all that matter was the person next to them. They never forget that.
So how are we different? and how are we the same?

Working together would be ideal in this situation but in reality it would come down to a power struggle. There's always someone who thinks he/she should be in charge and obeyed with no questions asked. The smartest and most logical would be towed under by the biggest and baddest.

Remember "Lord of the Flies"? If you think the fact that they were children is the reason it played out the way it did, think again.

Well, there would have been some, who had more sticks in their lean-to than all the other passengers. And part of human DNA is being cantankerous and complaining. That said, I think we are in an era of equality. Gay rights women's rights, Black rights, Latino rights, etc, etc. Racism is no longer fashionable. And globalization is eating away at divisions. A pic of a living room could be from a home in the US, UK, Germany, Columbia, or OZ.
Yet, part of human DNA is being cantankerous and complaining.

So this is a plane crash. The first thing would be medical care for the injured. If we were fortunate enough to have a doctor or nurse on board they would play a big role.

Then comes organization. Hopefully, there would be some people with leadership experience and some military or retired military. I would also hope for blue collar workers, people with practical hands on experience with things that would help with survival, shelter, food, etc.

Actually, I think we might get along better at first when everyone was concerned with survival. If we weren't rescued from the uninhabited island early on the divisions and competition would begin to show.

IMO our differences would disappear immediately because as Myrtle pointed out, medical for the injured would take precedence.

Since the pilot would know there was going to be an emergency landing sending coordinates would be the action taken. Between that and the black box, help would be dependent on how close to an inhabited land mass capable of sending help. Unlike TV or movies a really I doubt a long period of time needed for personalities to emerge would be a factor.

Wow! I don't know if my point was missed or I could have explain in a different way. Forget the black box/red box issue. Your down and no one knows where you are. While that is being processed you are down, alive and have to deal with your situation. You need to survive! . Does it matter whether the person next to you is muslim or black, yellow or purple. They need to survive as well. Work together or starve and die. What I am saying is that everything that separates us is what is the problem. I don't need to imprace another culture to accept it . I just need to acknowledge it and have respect. It,s amazing how we get along when we respect one another. Why can't we do that all the time?

I took your hypothetical situation as being from modern times when tracking flights are routine. I don't know if you could have presented a scenario that could duplicate the kind of dependency on a an ethnic mix you want to post about.

Well, pardon me all to heck. I watched Lost.

Maybe all you needed was this last paragraph you posted instead of a plane crash. 🤷‍♀️

the sole point was to present a scenario where you were left to survive with what you know and what the people around you know.
No, the plane crash was intended so as to put you in a different mind set. There are no options. all you have is yourself and the people who crashed with you. No alternatives. imagine.

As Myrtle pointed out taking care of the injured would be the 1st. priority. Then I would expect the plane captain to take the lead role. Once skills if any are determined then shelter & scavenging for food & potable water would be high on the list of what is needed. Since it's deserted island a good chance nothing that could do harm to humans would be present, but check any way.

The idea that people would separate & not help each other as time & resources dwindled might be something that would happen 100 years ago but now with the way tracking is in place imagining rescue efforts not already in progress just isn't possible. Think about the amount of effort put into that Malaysian air liner that went down. That effort went on for a long time even though the pilot knew how to thwart efforts.

Unlike the camaraderie forged in the military, the reason for untrained civilians to come together is for survival in what most assuredly would temporary.

I like the concept you are trying to get to but it's awkward when the circumstance IMO isn't realistic

I find your commence interesting. Technology today is much improved over yesterday no doubt but that does not negate my point. The only place I know where all activities go according to plans is in a Tom Clancy Novel.
Life has a course of it's own. Suppose the Plane captain is dead? Who takes charge?
Of course you take care of the wounded first. Now what? Find shelter, find food.....all you have is each other. Race, color don't matter now. Just human beings trying to survive.
No doubt the modern technology will provide help to your location, but how long till it does? 2 hours, 4 hours, 24,48, 1 week, 2?
Believe me military or civilian doesn't matter. Experience like we are talking about produces the same memories to all.
The whole idea was to express the fact that all our differences fade away when we need each other.
How come the differences are so important when we feel we don't need each other?

Going by my own experience, there would be a couple of survivors, ready to take charge while the rest of us huddle, numb with shock, shivering, alone! After the shock wears off human nature will assert itself and we grudgingly go along with the "organisers" but there is no big "brotherhood of all!" And I once believed, along with Beethoven, that one day "Alle Menschen Werden Brueder" (all of mankind would be brothers)! All the saber rattling, all the mini wars and the recent invasion of Ukraine are making me a cynic. We just don't seem to make progress since WWII when it comes to loving and co-existing harmoniously! God I believe, help thou my unbelief ... when it comes to humanity! But, please, prove me wrong in this forum!

In a word, mateship.

In the 1800s Australians were very much up against the elements on a very large and unfamiliar island. They survived by forming small groups with a few people they could trust to have their backs when needed. This was very evident on the gold fields and also later in the POW camps under the harsh conditions imposed by the Japanese. As if by instinct young Australians stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina gravitated together and protected each other. Conditions inside the stadium was pretty much law of the jungle and survival of the strongest but there is strength to be found in coming together in tough times.

We call it mateship.

you seem to be a kindred spririt. My point, you captured and expressed much better.
I had to reread your comments because there were some thoughts that I had not considered. Grudgingly going along....your right. Only after the fact can you consider whether following someone else's lead or whether you should have struck out on your own was the right choice. My point, was that differences matter little when you are trying to survive. Why can't we think and act like we need each other all the time.

trying to wrap my mind around us all on an airplane, beyond that the first order of business would be selecting god to blame. Non-believer's will need to make other arrangements.

lol.
2nd order of business would be wondering why the cell phone doesn't work. 3rd would be if anyone has a cigarette. I suspect 24 hours before we get to the oh s__t moment.
