Can a name make or mar a person

If kids are teasing you with another name, it’s most often done because they like you. There’re the exceptions.

My last name is the same as a common household item, but one letter is different. I have spent my entire life spelling my last name for people.

I went to school with a guy named Mike Oxlong. Of course to us, his friends, he was just Mikey, but he used to lament that his parents didn't think it through.

Spangler Arlington Brugh doesn't exactly trip off the tongue, and if you want to make it big in Hollywood best come up with a name like Robert Taylor.
Marion Robert Morrison had a similar problem so Hollywood helped him find something more suitable, something like, John Wayne.
My DH's fathers name was Marion, he never used it, they called him Ed. They made DH's older brother a Jr, he spent most of his time trying to be very macho. I am so glad I got the younger brother!

We had a Marine Officer name General R. Thomas Wilson. The “R” stood for Richard. He didn’t go by any of those names. Everyone that knew him really well and was close to him (not me included) got away with calling him Charles. I asked the Colonel one day why everyone called him Charles since none of his names were Charles. The Colonel said he likes being called Charles because his dad was named Charles and by calling him Charles, it shows respect to his father. I guess everyone has their idiosyncrasy’s.

Was looking up a number in another citys phone book. Did not find what I was seeking...but found Frank N, Stein. His parents knew exactly what they were doing

More likely it was someone who didn't want to be listed under his/her own name. In my single days, my phone number was listed under Ben Dover - no address, just the phone number. Friends were able to remember the joke of the listing when they couldn't find my phone number, so it worked out great.

The phone company imposed a small monthly charge if you wanted your number unlisted, but allowed you to use whatever name you wanted.

that's interesting. You're not allowed to do that here. It has to be in the name of Bill payer... or not at all..so unlisted is free, but you cannot give a fake name... . I've always had my number unlisted. ..called Ex Directory here . All that said.. I haven't seen a Phone book for years, I suspect they're probably ( if they still exist ) the thickness of a magazine now.

I read somewhere that Marian was a realtively common name in the USA at one time for Males.. and not for females.. hence John Wayne.. Marian Morrison ..

My name is so common that there were 6 other girls in my class with the same name. It wasn't until I was in high school that my Nun told me my full first name had Ann in it. I thought Ann was my middle name.

I always thought Dick Butkus got a raw deal when it came to names. You know children altered that name a bit and teased him in school. Then there was the lady who named her daughter Marijuana. I don't think it was spelled that way or may have been broken into a first and middle name. In 2015 a French court ruled a couple couldn't name their baby Nutella. In Tennessee, a court ruled against the name Messiah. Then another court ruling said the couple could use that name for their baby..

A Swedish couple gave their baby such a ridiculous name that it was outlawed. It is a string of letters and is #4 in the slideshow of 40 names that have been banned around the world (linked below). Some of these bans are surprising and ridiculous (can't use Linda in Saudi Arabia or Violet in Malaysia). But in defense of one of the banned names...why would anyone want to name their child "Scrotum"?!! And one couple wanted to name their child "." ...yep, just a period.

Marian was a not uncommon name for girls when I was growing up. Marion, the male version, was pretty well out of style by the time the 50s rolled around.

Leslie for boys became a rarity by the 50s, and is almost unheard of for boys US these days. Ditto Dana, Beverly, Lynn and Ashley.
