My DH's fathers name was Marion, he never used it, they called him Ed. They made DH's older brother a Jr, he spent most of his time trying to be very macho. I am so glad I got the younger brother!Spangler Arlington Brugh doesn't exactly trip off the tongue, and if you want to make it big in Hollywood best come up with a name like Robert Taylor.
Marion Robert Morrison had a similar problem so Hollywood helped him find something more suitable, something like, John Wayne.
Thank you. There are many of us in this forum who have much to challenge us since childhood, some much more than I did, but I think it made us stronger. You have had much to challenge you, it must have been hard.
More likely it was someone who didn't want to be listed under his/her own name. In my single days, my phone number was listed under Ben Dover - no address, just the phone number. Friends were able to remember the joke of the listing when they couldn't find my phone number, so it worked out great. Was looking up a number in another citys phone book. Did not find what I was seeking...but found Frank N, Stein. His parents knew exactly what they were doing
that's interesting. You're not allowed to do that here. It has to be in the name of Bill payer... or not at all..so unlisted is free, but you cannot give a fake name... . I've always had my number unlisted. ..called Ex Directory here . All that said.. I haven't seen a Phone book for years, I suspect they're probably ( if they still exist ) the thickness of a magazine now.More likely it was someone who didn't want to be listed under his/her own name. The phone company imposed a small monthly charge if you wanted your number unlisted, but allowed you to use whatever name you wanted.
who calls someone Disinfectant ?>..My last name is the same as a common household item, but one letter is different. I have spent my entire life spelling my last name for people.
I went to school with a guy named Mike Oxlong. Of course to us, his friends, he was just Mikey, but he used to lament that his parents didn't think it through.
I read somewhere that Marian was a realtively common name in the USA at one time for Males.. and not for females.. hence John Wayne.. Marian was a not uncommon name for girls when I was growing up. Marion, the male version, was pretty well out of style by the time the 50s rolled around.I read somewhere that Marian was a realtively common name in the USA at one time for Males.. and not for females.. hence John Wayne.. Leslie for boys became a rarity by the 50s, and is almost unheard of for boys US these days. Ditto Dana, Beverly, Lynn and Ashley.
