Thank God the child's injuries are not life threatening. He called 911 to protect his mom from her ex during a domestic dispute.
"Aderrien Murry was following his mother’s instructions when he called for help early Saturday in the Mississippi town of Indianola. Instead he got a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, fractured ribs and a five-day hospital stay after the responding officer, Sgt. Greg Capers, shot him in the chest as the boy was following demands to exit the home."

“The same cop that told him to come out of the house [shot him],” said Aderrien’s mother, Nakala Murry, according to CNN. “[Aderrien] kept asking, ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?"

Awful! Thanks @OneEyedDiva this truly is an awful story. I sure hope Aderrien recovers without long term problems, he is young that will work in his favor.

I think its too soon to reach any kind of judgement as to what happened, but I sure hope it is well investigated and justice is done.

Yes, indeed. The officer is older... and was named "policeman of the year"... he should be fired for sure... wasn't a wet behind the ears rookie, but I want to know what he's going to use as a defense because it seems pretty cut and dry.

I agree, from what little I have seen it does look pretty cut and dried, as you say. However I don't trust the press to tell the whole or balanced story. So I will try to wait and see, but on this one it is hard...

Oh no! Poor kid! I don't know if he'll ever trust police. The officer who shot him will have to step up and help him get over this

I agree press are most often slanted ................... i went looking for more articles and most all accounts are one sided while i can not foresee a reasonable explanation .....it would be nice to have a fuller picture......

An investigation is ongoing but the outcome will not make big news .......

not excusing the officer however Domestic violence calls are one of the most dangerous calls for officers many have been shot or attacked in domestic calls. ....
 
There are videos of the incident. GMA did an exclusive with the child but I haven't watched it yet. From what the mother said on the initial news report I saw, her child opened the door and followed the officer's commands before he was shot. I don't know how slanted the news reports can be and don't care. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Bottom line an unarmed child, who's obviously just a child was shot and could have been killed. I can't even imagine what that must've been like for his mother. to witness! @hearlady, the reports didn't say the abuser is his father but the father of one of her other children. Regardless, I hope that the mother is able to remove that man from her life but since they have a child together, that may be easier said than done.

That is what is pretty much what's being reported. I guess I'd like to think no policeman would want to shoot an innocent child, this one included. Maybe it was an accident like faulty trigger on the gun. Maybe there was something the boy did that actually looked like a threat to the cop, he had only a split second to make the decision to shoot. Not saying any of this happened but I think we need to wait and let the story play out.

If the cop is guilty he deserves the worst punishment we can give him.

Once we know why actions need to be taken to reduce the risk of it every happening again.

Yep, the cop was in danger just responding to the call and he would have been well aware of it.

He should get some of the responsibility for this, without his illegal abuse it would never have happened...
 
That is a little boy who will grow up afraid of the police, at some point his fear may cause him to run. If that happens, we all know what will be the end.
 
That is sad and the report suggests to me that the police
are working hard to find a cover-up for his actions.

The bottom line is that color really has nothing to do with it. A police officer shot a child. And it was the child who made the phone call to 911. When he arrives at the sight of a 911 call, does he always arrive with guns blazing? He has no right being a cop, he is supposed to protect the public, not turn against them.

It sure does. I'm reading follow-ups this morning and can't help but wonder if it may have been wiser to wait at least a little longer on the $5 Million lawsuit his family already filed. Maybe their attorney made the decision... the little guy almost got killed and is still recovering... suing for millions would be the last thing on my mind a week later. Has nothing to do with whether or not they should file, but rather the timing. No? Yes? What do ya'll think?

Yes, that was my point when I mentioned the media... they report these shootings in different ways always making color a factor but it boils down to the same thing... another officer shooting, and even worse that it's a kid this time.

I am sure it was an attorney who pushed for this. Can't really blame the family though, the possibility of getting millions would tempt most of us.

Hope this story doesn't become mostly about the money, what matters to me is knowing that real justice is done.
 
I usually look for excuses for the police because I know they have a hard dangerous job to do, but I can't find any excuse at all here. It would be bad enough if the child had somehow surprised the cop, but the cop ordered him to come out. If the police are going to order us, any of us, to come out with hands up, and then they shoot us when we do ... well.

I'm always saying just don't resist arrest, always comply with their orders, and you'll be okay. I guess, not always.

I agree that the abusive husband should also pay a price for this.

As for the law suit, yes they've been popping up almost the minute something like this happens and it makes the family look like that's all that matters, but we don't know when or how the thought came to them. Maybe some ambulance chaser followed the mother to the hospital saying "Don't you want to sue?" and she said, "Hell, yes," through her tears. It's not just desire for the money but a desire to punish the shooters. Which I would have in droves. Plus, the huge amount of money George Floyd's family got is fresh in everyone's mind. I would like to see this mother get money, not only for her son's care but so that she could afford to permanently remove the abusive man from her life.

I wonder how long before (my guess) a lawyer approached them................ to get together a lawsuit in a week without investigation even being finished.
Getting this in news ASAP while story is in public attention ....... really is a push for city to make settlement to clam media frenzy and lawyer walks away with 20%. This is the court of social media/media that so many feel has all the information.
