Do you believe in prophets/prophesy?

There are enough would be prophets out there that a few of them are bound to get something right. Just count the ones who guess right and forget the one's who missed, and it all starts to seem like magic.

I do. Have a lot of Scottish ancestry and am a believer in the Sight. My mom has it to a small degree. During her career as an anesthetist, she would sometimes get a bad feeling about a person about to undergo a routine elective surgery that shouldn't have presented difficulties but did. Some of the surgeons called her a witch in jest but at least one really meant it.

some call that well honed intuition - in access of the norm! - feasible

How about Psychics ... I'm guessing most say NO! And I agree ... however comma ...

Had a very strange experience many years ago while reading the local fish wrapper at my mom's one Sunday afternoon while she was out visiting friends (Sunday's are great for that) and I shot over all alone to raid her refrigerator.

All was very quiet in moms house. No TV on, no music, no nothing, just dead silence. The gorgeous weather that Sunday was perfectly clear with not a cloud in the sky. It was middle of the day early afternoon.

Reading the paper I noticed there was an ad for a Psychic in New Jersey. Alrighty then ... bored and doubtful, I took a deep breath, relaxed and I internally silenced my mind to all thought ... except ... over and over and over like a mantra I slowly concentrated on the Psychics name and said call [mom's] number ... over ... and over ... and over ... and over ... and THE PHONE RANG !!!

Startled abruptly from my very relaxed but intense meditative state, I jumped to answer the phone AND ... There was only static on the line. Pure static. On a perfectly fine and clear middle of the day Sunday afternoon and out of the clear blue for no reason, the phone rings and there was static on the line and nothing else. Who the heck called? There were no problems with my mom's phone. I asked her later. Nope, no problems.

Was it the Psychic ... doubt it. Was it me willing the phone to ring ... wait, can anyone even do that? I will never know ... and don't try that stuff anymore :ROFLMAO: ... confusing and kinda scary it was, playing with things I didn't and don't understand.
Reading your post reminded me of something that happened to me years ago. My Aunt took my 90yr old grandfather to a feast day.
gathering and left him sitting on a bench while she went to get him something to eat. When she turned around he was gone. She looked all around but could not find him. After that, we went looking for him many many times. One day my sister and I got tickets to see Jean Dixon who was supposed to know things. We promised not to mention why we were there. We sat in the audience of over a hundred people. We kept quiet the whole time,
After the show, we went to get her autograph and when she touched my hand she said: "He is lost and they'll find his body Tuesday."Sure enough, a little boy was going home from school on Tuesday and tripped over my grandfather's body. That made me believe that some people have ability to see the future.

or indeed the past as they saw your grandfathers death and you hadn't?? and then as well could fortell the future in the phrase "...they'll find his body on Tuesday"

This brings up Nostradamus, one of my pet peeves. Nobody can say exactly how some guy in the 1500s is able to foretell the future??? What is the process??? And the predictions, " The blue knight will slay the king of the east". Well, of course, the prediction is so precise that it's the Kennedy assassination, or the Lincoln assassination, or Hitler's death, maybe Bin Laden???????

My dad had dreams about people close to him dying for about a year. His brothers, close friends and parents. Never my mom or us kids. After my 8 year old brother died unexpectedly the dream’s stopped. He never had any kind of future dreams about the future. 30 years later when I had cancer and not real good odds, he said that he didn’t worry about me because he didn’t have any dreams. My dad was a quiet man. Who knows what is what. Whatever gives you comfort to make it through this world.

The mind is an amazing thing. The CIA has for decades conducted experiments and operations using extraordinary people said to be capable of Remote Viewing, wherein they are said to be able to describe real time events and physical layout of pinpoint areas and specific locations anywhere in the world. Sometimes I don't even know what's going on in the next room. Shoot. Timeline of CIA activities ... Remote Viewing
Freedom of Information released documents from the CIA describe these operations but as posted on the Internet are extremely hard to read because of the format they are posted in but can be found with a google search. The fact these operations have gone on for decades may indicate there is at least sometimes a good degree of success in remote viewing by some gifted individuals. But to doubters, I'm sure these experiments and operations are likely deemed an example of government fraud, waste and abuse.

d'ya recall the film of the same topic which became quite popular - the main character who could fortell 'happenings' and was being tracked down by say the CIA who wanted him to work for them I guess ; was played by Anthony Hopkins - outstanding acting as usual

Next, with Nicolas Cage used the same premise.

Yes and no. I don't believe in prophets in the Biblical sense but some people are clairvoyant/psychic whatever you will. So listen, but have a care who you listen to and why.
Some people are gifted. No doubt. Some, plain charlatans.

Biblical Prophets were gifted. Jesus was a prophet , said, “You can be ALL that I am and more.’ If this is true, then why were/ are so many burned to a stake as witches doing the devils work?

It’s like Christianity monopolized intuition , clairvoyance, esp to be used positively only for their benefit. Special gifts were only given to special people which was all a huge mystery in the biblical sense.

You know Gary. I was very polite and respectful to you and everyone else on this thread. Why this disrespectful attitude now?
@PeppermintPatty

Then I totally misread you
No matter, it is not my place to judge or make snide laced comments
Please forgive me for that
Not here
But in your heart

We're all struggling in these times
Nobody needs derogatory remarks

I plan on showing the prophesy of Daniel 2 here this evening
(Just for those interested or unknowing)
It covers thousands of years, and proven quite precise

My apologies also for not being as patient and understanding as I can be. I have adjusted my post to eliminate any snark in my attitude or at least I tried. Lol

This is one of those topics that has made me realize how big a monopoly the church has on our society in general .

When you state the prophets were believed but only ones deemed trustworthy by the church. That’s a lot of power.

Even different cultures who had particular rituals were viewed as savage and treated accordingly

Its a shame that so many took advantage of this power and it’s too bad that my focus is on the negative aspects.

I’m trying to reframe my thinking to find a better perspective but with some things, I can’t.

I apologize if I treated you unfairly. You have just as much right to believe as I have to disbelieve. Actually I DO believe, it’s just not in the same kind of way and I should be ok with that.

I truly respect your right to have blind faith. A big part of me envies you for that. It must feel really good.

Well, I'm no churchy
My faith is not based on what a church dictates
Pretty far from it

Churches now are akin to what Jesus faced with the Pharisees and Sadducees

Well, I don't really consider it 'blind'
The prophesies of The Word is where my faith is based

Thank you for your replies
Means much to this grizzled wretch

Do you believe in prophets/prophesy?

"proph·et
noun
noun
: prophet; plural noun: prophets; plural noun: Prophets; plural noun: the Prophets

1.
a person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God."

Yes.

"proph·e·sy
verb
verb
: prophesy; 3rd person present: prophesies; past tense: prophesied; past participle: prophesied; gerund or present participle: prophesying

say that (a specified thing) will happen in the future."

Well, in every culture and during every time period there are countless pronouncements of what will happen in the future. I believe that sooner or later some of those pronouncements are bound to come true.

I have been sitting here wondering if my ‘blind faith’ sounded sarcastic and I think it probably did. It wasn’t meant as sarcasm at all.

When I was younger, a close neighbour of mine who I babysat for started a Bible study group and I really liked it a lot. That study group helped build up my confidence immensely and a lot of it had to do with the unshakable faith. That kind of faith has limitless strength. The kind of strength that’s life changing .

Each new school year that started, I would start fresh as a new believer and I’d do great until just after Christmas. At Christmas I’d crash and burn but I still went to Sunday school and genuinely liked and appreciated the positive loving attitude I would get just from being around those who had faith and believed.

Later in life I got to know the Mennonites so well that I got invited to the church and later to dinner. The ride to the church was done by horse and carriage and it was so wonderful. It was a colourful fall day.

Once inside there was a lot singing; something I love doing but there’s something extra special about singing with a bunch of people. It’s a sacred ritual done with such relentless joy.

Blind faith is something I miss in my life. I’m serious when I say I envy that you have that.
For myself, even if I join a group, I feel guilty because a big part of me doesn’t believe in organized religion so I have hypocrisy as a weighted anchor.
