Age is a belief, not a reality?

Is age more of a belief than a reality? Like a self fulfilling prophecy? Growing up way back when, there was a fitness guru named Jack LaLane. He had a thirty minute tv show daily and I loved him as a kid. He was always so fit and happy in his outlook on life. As he aged he remained much the same and died in his late ninties I believe. I also watch a youtuber sometimes, Chris Gibson, who is almost 60 but looks 29. He's a self proclaimed anti aging skin care "expert" who got into anti aging at around the same age I did early twenties. When you start that young, it helps I think.

So how much of "aging" is what we are taught to expect and how many of us believe you have at least some control over it? I know I think we can control a lot more than than the medical and cosmeceutical companies would like us to believe is possible.

Aging is a reality. How you age is rather subjective. It depends on how well you take care of yourself and your genetic predisposition. Do you exercise, eat right, watch out for too much sun exposure, have healthy sleep habits, manage stress, and have enough social interactions? In the long run, it all adds up to maintaining your health and mental well-being.

funny you should mention Chris Gibson..because I once showed his channel to my husband and asked him how old he thought Chris was.. ( they were both the same age at the time)... O/H guessed exactly as you think.. 29... he was shocked to the core when I told him he was 58 ( at the time )

I believe I am aging, it's reality. However some of us age faster than others, and a part of that is phycological... belief I guess. So kind of both.

Some is believed to be quantum physics also. When you are happy time seems to pass very quickly. When you are stressed, sick or or otherwise unhappy times drags. It is believed "by some" that people who seem to defy their age only age for the amount of time they have spent in happiness which seems like minutes because happiness seems to pass so quickly. So they have only aged minutes. Those who do look and feel their age or older, age in their unhappiness which is so much longer because unhappiness seems to last years. So they look and feel years older. It's an interesting point of view even if I don't explain it very well.

Aging is of course inevitable, but how you age depends on the way you view it, and what you do in life to keep your body in shape.
Several of my fellow fitness trainers and members don't look anywhere near as old as their actual age. Others have the "I'm old therefore I must be and act" old...and, they end up in sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. shrug.gif

Some people might not look their age, but they are aging in other ways that, at first, might not be as apparent as a wrinkle-lined face. They're wracked with pain and suffering from arthritis or nerve damage. They have back pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, hand pain, hip pain, knee pain, foot pain, etc. So, for all outward appearances, on the surface, they might look younger than their contemporaries, but in reality, they are suffering from old age.

The key to happiness at all ages is ACCEPTANCE of everything which happens to us no matter what or who caused it. We MUST accept pain, impairment and even death without concerns. I also think that belief in the PROTECTION of Jesus Christ protects us even more even if that story turns out to be mythology. BELIEF is more important than facts.

ALWAYS look at the SILVER LIING in every cloud.

I remember Jack LaLane with his bodysuit and instructional videos! I also watch Chris Gibson on Youtube. I've bought some of the products he has endorsed. He does look amazing for 57 or 58 but he probably uses a Ring Light. In any case, he looks amazing.

To answer your question, I was just thinking today that I don't feel at all like 65 y/o. I feel at least as good as I did in my 40s, probably better. I worked so much that I couldn't keep up with any fitness routine. Before I retired, my blood pressure was 160/84. Last week, it was 135/80. Sure, I would like to stop my thinning skin from bruising with every slight bump, but I can still build muscle at the gym and walk briskly outside or on the treadmill for extended periods. I am much more active than my parents were and my mother, who rarely left her house, lived to 89.

I know genetics play a part in it, but I do think we have control over it as well. I am rarely sedentary. Even when I'm in the house, I'm moving around. I try to eat healthy and exercise, and I'm not going to let anyone tell me as I approach 70 that I can't feel young.

I guess the ageing process seems to have been built into humanity and that is a discussion alone no doubt - but certainly avoiding alcohol or smoke in the lungs ; living out of the cities and factory suburbs ; inflicting regular daily exercises and being positive to self and others would go a long way [baring genetic indispositions] to having a long life I would imagine. Much harder of course to achieve in our modern societies and I'm talking from post the industrial era

Process of getting older I believe is how you treat yourself. I always try to eat right, get exercise, Positive thinking. I am 64, be 65 in August. I do not take allot of medications (Take several Vitamins), I consume alcohol once in a Blue moon, no Recreational drugs, don't smoke. At present, I do not have any periods of pain etc. (Thank the Lord). I try to be happy for me and others. I don't believe in a magical cream or pill that will fix anything. I have worked for over 30 years, have raised 4 kids...My son turns 50 in August. Was a mom @15. My oldest daughter just turned 47 (married with 1 child). I go with her to doctor appts., she laughs...says "Mom, shouldn't I be helping you instead of you helping me?" I tell her think positive...It is what it is. So I think its your frame of mind, positive thinking and acceptance. .....MY Opinion!

I'm with ya on this one! - leave booze; fags and fatty foods alone and have a good sex life!

A long, active life depends on genetics, rather than "good thoughts". Aging is a process ruled by your DNA. "Good thoughts" won't stop a major heart defect from killing you when you're 51. Granted exercise, a good diet, and free from depression may increase the quality and sometimes lengthen life. But none of that matters if genetics are against you. For every long living fitness guru, there's an old geezer, who smoked 5 unfiltered Pall Mall packs a day and also drank a gallon of rot gut.
