This Day in History Thread has become personal

Posting to old forum threads is called necro-posting, and is subject to ridecule on some forums. Some forum software will advise and warn a person that's just reading an older thread. I personally have no qualms about 'bumping' an old thread, if there's still some plausible relevance left to add.
I was on a music / sax forum learning new things which I enjoyed. At first I started making new threads about the subjects I was interested in only to be told by admin to use the search button before creating new threads which is what I then did.

I’d find threads using the search button and post the questions I had. Most of these threads had a notice at the bottom stating that I may not receive a reply since the threads were so old but I’d post anyway since that’s what I was asked to do.

Since these threads were so old, there were many new things available which I even knew about so I’d add that info to the old thread.

I then got a notice by the same admin telling me that if I had specific questions I that I should create a new thread. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I regret doing this but I've noticed within the past couple of weeks, certain people have posted personal things which they think is funny in the Today in History Thread. This was not my intention when I started this in 2019, I did so because I love history. At the moment I'm really po'd,please stop doing this because this thread is being wrecked thanks Sue aka MQ
It seems to never fail. Surprises pop up when all you want to do is, what you did. But, I hope it does and we can enjoy your thread about history. I love history as well.

"Since these threads were so old, there were many new things available which I even knew about"

Exactly. Anyone should be able to read what interests them, so what if its an old thread? They may find helpful information. IMO old threads need to stay. It's easy to see if a thread thats older has been revived by someone and your not interested, simply look at the date below the threads topic. Too old for you? Scroll on.

The thing is, many of these older threads were about common problems others musicians were having including myself . Luckily since these threads started, many products have now become available that actually work great. I would add my suggestions included with links of where to get the items, add photos of the items and include how well they worked.

Oddly enough these threads were the top threads that showed when using the ā€˜search’ function and I didn’t really care if others didn’t respond. I was so thrilled to find products that worked that I wanted to pass the info to others.

Maybe administration wanted new threads just to make the place look busier. I honestly don’t understand the concept but I kept resurrecting old thread regardless, being the rebel that I am. 🤪 lol

I also believe old threads should stay. Even if only one person finds it helpful, it’s worth it. šŸ‘

So what? So is everyone here.
I’m wondering the same thing. Has there been a new rule made for journal writing?

Gary? Why do you feel this way? What did you read? Spill the beans. Lol

PS….. Reading your thread is like going for a lovely walk on a beautiful day and enjoying nature and the scenery. It’s no wonder you’re a bit protective about it . It’s sacred stuff.

Please "report" the post I will clean up the thread.
@Matrix
I'm not into 'reporting', but this is the post

I'm sure @OldFeller meant well, but didn't consider a few things
Threads should have a limited number of posts or some other way to close automatically. No thread should go past a year.
I hate reading a recent post to a thread put out there years ago.

Just make a new thread. That way we know that it's fresh and the person who opened it still cares. It also serves to get the topic back on track.
For me, the post isn't a big deal if time limits aren't gonna happen

While i don't visit the thread in question often, i get why @moviequeen1 feels as she does even tho i'm generally a person who expects and accepts that any thread i start may take on a life of it's own, usually by organically conversationally stepping off topic as various people respond to each other.

But i got to thinking. How would those of you who post threads for specific genres of music feel if a couple of commenters started a back and forth, complete with videos, of very different genres than you wanted it to be, maybe of every genre except the one the thread was dedicated to?

There are a couple of general anything goes threads: What are you doing today; How's the weather where you are for example. We can also talk to each other 'privately' or in a small group by starting a 'conversation'. So why clutter up someone else's thread, which you can't have much interest in if you're going way of topic. with your personal stuff?

What is more, maybe if a comment that is off topic for the thread at hand really intrigues us we should go start a thread about that as i'm about to do. Sparked by @OldFeller remark about panties getting in a twist easier as we age. That's a huge generalization and one of the less flattering ones about Seniors.

Um...because those people have a strong sense of self entitlement and can do as they want?

I'm a little late to the party here, but do sympathize with @moviequeen1. That's a very specific thread and should keep to the subject matter. Many, many threads are wide open to all manner of comments, others are not. Game threads, Word of the Day, Financial threads, etc., typically stick closely to the subjects at hand. There may be a related comment or two, but they generally stay on topic.

As for closing old threads, I don't believe it would enhance this forum to close or delete old, inactive or lengthy threads. On the contrary, it's rather nice that old threads (like old people) are considered viable and are welcomed here.

I'll wear the goat horns, I guess.

My usual M.O. is to tell a lame joke on a thread and then disappear from that thread. I just like sprinkling corny jokes here and there on the forum.

I had no idea the OP would spontaneously combust over one harmless attempt at humour. This is all a little 'extra' if you ask me.

And half of the time I don't even remember which poster started a thread!

I remember I started the 'Let's String Together a Story' thread last year. It was fun and going well with a lot of serious and poignant additions to the tale. But then it all got railroaded by a couple of posters trying to be funny instead of furthering the story. I got a bit miffed I might add...but ultimately figured the thread was a compilation of each person's life experiences...it wasn't the hill I wanted to die on...etc...so I just let it go.

I just find the attitude that 'This is MY thread, please adhere to my rules'...just a bit over-the-top. We're a cosmopolitan forum full of varied opinions and different takes on life. That's what makes this place tick so well...the creative diversity. You can always just ignore a post you don't like and move on is all I am saying.

I started a thread on another forum I belong to and it got over 250 replies....200 of which were completely unrelated to the original topic. This happened within one week LOL

Isn't that annoying? It's happened to me before too. You just have to laugh.

No

It's pretty simple

My diary thread's gone......I'm gone
I understand!

I recently had someone jump on me for writing too long a post on someone's diary. I hadn't noticed it was a diary thread because I'd picked it up from the side panel and was just adding to the conversation of the moment. Anyway I deleted my post afterward. Now I try not to say anything on the diary threads, just read, and or occasionally add likes.

My Fitness Pal used to have a personal blog added to everyone's profile. I was using mine to write my life story. One day it was just gone and when I asked I was told the powers that be had deleted all the blogs! Without warning! Can you imagine?

To quote Oscar Wilde's line for Cecily in "The Importance of Being Earnest." "My diary is just the private thoughts of a young girl and consequently meant for publication."

OMG, ignore the post(er) if you don't like it. Me - I rarely read an older post so delete it or not and start a new one or not. I am sooooooo thankful I don't monitor posts - I think I would go insane!
