Radical protesters vandalize Monet painting with red stuff

Radical protesters supposedly linked to an organization called 'save the wetlands' smeared red stuff all over a Monet painting in a Stockholm museum.

These environmental wack a dos have been protesting the use of oil in oil paintings done last century several times a year it seems. How about having the guts to protest the living people and organizations/business that irk them rather than dead people. It's seems to be a signature for a modern day environmental protestor.

This kind of criminal vandalism is messing with history along with destroying/damaging someone else's property.

We have the same "stuff" happening here in Canada. In the province where I live they knocked down a statue of Queen Victoria. They say she was a colonist! After a long time, the government put up a new statue and within days it was spray painted.

They have also toppled statues of John A. Macdonald ( a Scotsman) who was our 1st Prime Minister in Canada.

The young generation have this thing about destroying and changing history. They hate the way that the government handled the residential schools with the First Nations. They seem to hate everything that happened in the past because they say it was not "nice."

My viewpoint is this: History is history and we learn from it's mistakes. You are totally ignorant if you say that 6 millions Jews were never murdered. You might as well say the earth is flat. The Spanish did terrible things in Mexico and South America. The Nazis killed millions of people, Stalin murdered 20 millions Ukrainians, in the past the British disliked the French and the French disliked the British. The Americans took a lot of land from Mexico that is now California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. Canadians and Americans disagreed and had a bit of a war in the Battle of 1812.

I could go on but what's the point? I just wish the younger generation were not such sissies. They should learn from the past, not try to change it. They should look to the future and see how they could make our world a better place. I hope to live long enough before I die to see our younger generation "take up the torch" and make this sorry world a better place . I'm still hopeful!

I think if anyone checked into what happens to these people they would find they aren't punished very heavily. Most are probably on the streets again in a short time. If they were treated as the criminals they are instead of as protesters this would probably stop.

Yes, eradicating a society's culture and history results in an aimless, amoral society.

Why? What could they be thinking?
The article said the painting is encased in glass, so it's repairable, but Why?
and "linseed oil?" Why would they protest that?
Thinking?? Nothing rational that's for sure.

Even if Monet had used petroleum based oil paint it would probably have been less than was used in making the clothing the idiot protesters were wearing... And as @Murrmurr pointed out linseed oil contains no petroleum products. And how much petroleum was used to transport the protestors to the museum?

This is stupidity on so many levels.

It's also illegal, I hope the protester serve a substantial jail sentence. Maybe in an unheated cell, to save oil...

We have just celebrated Australia Day on January 26th. Vandals threw red paint on some of the statues of our forebears. One statue of Captain Cook was cut off at the ankles during the night. Surely someone heard the saws operating during the night. and it was got on film. Police were kept busy arresting a group of Nazi idiots that love disrupting the city. Melbourne has banned the Nazi salute. Indigenous groups are calling it "Invasion Day". We can't change history; this is what happened, and it happened all around the world. We arrived here in 1947, nobody handed us a silver tray with all the benefits. My Dad worked bloody hard to give us the best possible start in life.
I flew the Australian flag because I'm so proud to see it. I'm afraid the so-called Woke people are ruining this great country.
We don't fly our flag often enough. It should be displayed on all buildings every day. Even in Sweden they are very flag proud
and fly it in their front yards to celebrate their birthdays.

As long as news media reports on why groups are protesting, such groups will have reason to act so on famous artworks in order to receive publicity. So would be wise for news media to only name the perpetrators but say nothing about their cause.
I''d say emphasize/report it as vandalism not a protest. If the perps want to say.their motive was a protest ok but in the end it's vandalism, a CRIMINAL act

The "young" [as you noted them] seem to want to do any & everything they can , to distance themselves from us.

Big cars/small cars ... business attire / backyard grunge ... gold & stock market/bitcoin ... many words & language references ... land line/smart phone ... television/streaming ... etc, & so-on.

No cause, the just wanted to be in the news and on TV. That goal was accomplished. And the soup they threw on the painting only dirty the glass frame protecting the painting. They also knew this...as the painting itself is Priceless!

This is so pointless. The protesters are idiots Howdoes this help their cause?
I was thinking the same thing. After these stupid stunts, who's going to listen to them or care about their cause. There are good people who are speaking out about environmental issues. Then these morons come along and make a laughingstock out of their cause. Jackasses!
