Do You Ever Worry About Getting Dementia?

Just keep repeating the "Serenity Prayer. "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the energy and courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

We MUST accept everything that happens to us no matter if it's pain, impairment or death.

I play chess at Chess.com every day to keep my mind active, I play Civilization VI at Steam.com every day, I walk TWO walks of 2,000 steps every day, I drink 8 glasses of juice, I take 3,000 mg of Tylenol and 200 mg of Gabapentin to relieve my pain. If our minds go under, just play games and amuse yourself with artificial dreams and you will make it until you will be able to accept death.

Father Death (Jesus Christ) takes us ALL in the end and we cease to exist ending all problems.

You are going to live to be 150, Mitch. Just keep at it. :)

I do think about it. I am taking daily allergy pills. Without them I suffer from debilitating migraine headaches. Research shows daily allergy medication usage increases your odds of dementia. Rock and a hard place
I have read that about Benadryl. Its used a lot in OTC cheap sleep meds. There are alternatives.

Both hubs and I have it in our families. We take Omega 3s including the ALA, Tumeric, multi vitamin and extra D. . We keep our blood sugar in check. Drink some caffeine and red wine. Recently added the Mediterranean Diet salads to our lives. Walk daily, sleep well. Avoid processed foods. Use olive or avocado oil. Treats are nuts, seeds and fresh berries. Read, discuss current events, and best of all laugh a lot and often.

I do worry some when spouse asks same thing over and over ........ or forgets things i just told him .....cannot keep things in his head for even a couple hours sometimes but i see most is if it was not HIS idea or something important to him he just does not care to remember

i have known many who end up with a spouse with dementia and it looks like an awful existence..........
My husband died of complications of dementia and I was his caretaker for 4 years. It was awful.

No, not me. I read a lot, exercise 5 days/week, eat healthy and love to travel, play my guitar, drink my rum and wine and talk to people. You wouldn't find me hiding in no closet, under no bed and never walking alone on the street wearing one of those god awful bird beak masks. Life is just too short and I'm making everyday count for something. I feel that watching cable TV is a good cause of dementia so I cut my cable 23 years ago and I have never missed it. Have a nice Day!

Sorry if you or any loved ones have dementia. My brother-in-law and his wife had it so I know that it is no laughing matter. Very sad, really! Best of luck!

It's funny you should ask. The day before you posted this question, my son and I were in our eye doctor's waiting area. He told me that one of his greatest fears is losing his memory and forgetting the people in his life that he loves. I told him I am concerned for myself too because my sister (we're half sisters) has dementia and I have seen hers progress to where her short term memory is really bad now. I don't know if I'll be afflicted someday and sometimes I do feel like I'm "slipping" (mentally). Some factors causing Alzheimer's can be genetic. This article has a section explaining that.

@Packerjohn My sister was a prolific reader too and loved doing crossword puzzles. She was also a member of several committees and boards, including for the church and county. She was president and chairperson on a couple of those. Between her responsibilities as a board member and vacationing with her S.O. or me, she traveled frequently as well. She kept pretty busy and did try to exercise some, though maybe not as much as you. I called her the Energizer Bunny because she was always busy doing something. Yet...dementia got her.

The Alzheimer’s Society Have an online fact sheet that is very helpful: The following is just the first paragraph. Click on the link, there's some very useful advice.

Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. It is a set of symptoms that develop when the brain is damaged by disease. There are many things that can increase a person’s chances of developing dementia – these are known as ‘risk factors’. There are different types of risk factors for dementia, including medical, lifestyle and environmental factors. It is possible to avoid some risk factors, while others cannot be controlled. This factsheet describes the risk factors for the two most common types of dementia – Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. It is written for anyone who wants to know more about what increases a person’s chances of getting dementia.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, I would stress the importance of caretakers allying themselves with support groups. One might think that family members would step in to offer support, but sadly many are conspicuous by their absence. Glad that we now have a mental health section here at SF! The topics may be at times uncomfortable to talk about, but they touch upon things that many of us may directly or indirectly encounter…

No way. My mind is excellent. I don’t forget things, faces, names, numbers whatever. My mind is sharp. I do crossword puzzles everyday. You can get thousands of free puzzles right here on the net. I like Puzzles. I carry 6 credit cards. I know the numbers on each card, including the little number on the back.

Born-to-lose... I do all the same as you, and hope that I'll never get Dementia.. but I say this to everyone.. if having a Good memory thwarted dementia.. then Actors and musicians who have to learn long lines of script, and or long musical scores would never get it.. and as we know they get it as often as anyone else..

I recently read an article that said if you are wondering if you have dementia, then you don’t have it. When you start having serious forgetfulness, and are not aware of it, then it is dementia.

Does getting Dementia worry you?
Not yet

Just got off the phone with my 85 yr old boss
Hadn't got any emails from him for months
So, I called
Horrific conversation
Two years ago he was sharp as ever
Now? He hardly knows where he lives
He knew me
But
Thought we'd just did a round of golf
Whoa!
We haven't played golf for years
I'm thinking next time I call him he won't know me
if
he even picks up

I have seen several of my friends and neighbors suffer from dementia. That is a hazard of living with other senior citizens. Some of my friends have left our building and gone on to places that provide extra care for people suffering from dementia. One friend went away for awhile but returned. It's hard watching her because the dementia still affects her.

I have nightmares that I suffer from dementia. Sometimes I worry about it.. but I keep plodding along.

Do I worry about it? Well, I'm aware of it, and it's certainly not something I like to contemplate. Same with Alzheimer's.

To be frank, open and honest - if I were diagnosed with either, then my planning for the end would begin. I can't say at what point I'd sign off, but I'd go by my own hand. There doesn't seem to be any good from an end with either diagnosis. Just pain, pain on the ones you love. I like to think I'd know when it was time for me.

Does getting Dementia worry you?
No, because I don't choose to worry about extra things that aren't here yet. I just take care of my body the best I can. However, my recal wasn't the greatest so I am taking another supplement for the brain which is Lion's Mane 4X. One a day. It was recommended by a doctor. I got it at Fountain of Health where I live.
