Makeup for Women, Bad or Good Experience?

Growing up I'd a bad experience with makeup which affected how I deal with it and how and what I wear!

So, question is: Did you have a good or bad experience? Has a female relative helped or ruined your use of makeup?

My maternal grandmother wore her makeup as a blend of Betty Boop and Queen Elizabeth I, the Tudor Queen.

Gramps referred to it as being applied and removed with a trowel.

It was white base foundation, either cream or powder, then followed by two 10pence size red rouge on her cheeks, same wild red Betty Boop fashion on her lips, lashes and lashes of black mascara and eyeliner.

As someone who eventually needed to wear glasses for medium myopia, it meant that what I saw coming towards me, were 3 red spots who looked like an angry red face. Scary for a two years old.

Mother wore false eyelashes ONLY for attending weddings, plus foundation, light coloured blush and lipstick. Sibling went overboard.

Same grandmother with that much makeup, would scream at us girls, if we came home from school at lunchtime with homework from teachers to wash our faces with either pond cream, noxzema or just soap. The word was very hurtful... Begins with W ends in E.

During teenage years, I was entered by fellow students into a modelling contest. I won a full education on Day, Office, Evening and Theatrical makeup.

I prefer wearing glasses over contacts, so mascara's a no-no, same with falsies, scratches in lenses.

Foundation caused problems with tzone and acne. Mostly it's blush plus lipstick, these days it's lipstick only. For special occasion, I do the natural version of makeup at that modelling school.

I've square finger nails with very small nail beds. A result of a heart attack suffered by Mother while expecting me. I'm blessed with white tops and pink beds, natural French manicure.

Therefore, I wear one clear coat with partial white on tips. Over the years many guys (which surprised me very much) said they preferred fresh faced girlfriends lol!

Your turn now, what was your experiences growing up and what if how much did you ended up wearing, makeup wise?

Funny you should mention this. Just yesterday a friend and I wound up where we usually wind up after picking up groceries. We head for the makeup section of the store. She started looking at eye shadow on sale and asked if I was going to get some. Told her that I do not know how to apply it as the tutorials have all these directions for one colour in the middle, another colour in the corner, then up to the brows.
Snort.....I do not have time for all that. And who is going to see it? The trash collector?

I did the whole makeup pallet when younger. Today it is the basics, foundation, eyeliner if I am going out, always mascara, lipstick, brow pencil.

And don't tell anyone but I just bought my first wrinkle thing last week.

Good on you! BTW, I've never ever touched my eyebrows, they're as natural as can be. Eyelashes are too short for that curling contraption lol!

Gramps and Papa disliked makeup extremes. They've always said this to me: "If a boy doesn't like your looks au natural, then it isn't you he loves, it's the artificial you!"

So, I've kept it to basics lol!

I stopped wearing make-up about the time I burned my bra, some time in the late 60's. haven't regretted it; haven't looked back...
I remember the bra burning rituals in the area of the old gallows. I began wearing a bra only in my twenties after fixing my iron deficiency and balancing my thyroid hormones. Then that particular Faery visited me lol! If you know what I mean...

Can you explain a little more? Do you use a brush, and do you line under the lower lashes too? I would use grey or maybe brown.

There is a cashier at a store I frequent who wears bright blue shadow, she is in her 60's, looks like a clown.
I use a little sponge tip applicator and line both upper and lower. I do use a soft gray and brown, depending on what I am wearing. I blend the top one a little so it is not as distinct a line as the bottom one. My eyebrows are totally white, so I dye them a light soft brown so it looks like I have some. ;)

I generally as you can see <<<<<<<<<...do not wear make-up..except lipstick.. and in winter a little blusher.

I wear Mascara if I'm going somewhere nice, but never false eyelashes.. I just can't keep my hands still enough to apply them.. :ROFLMAO:

I have never curled my lashes.. no interest.. and I haven't worn eye shadow for decades...

If I'm going somewhere special at night I'll wear foundation.. as well, and highlighter.. but nothing more...

I used to wear the whole 9 yards when I was a teen.. why do we do that when we need it the least ?... Panstick, lipstick, coloured eyeshadow.. ( yes Lee Blue )>.. :D I've never suffered from Acne or skin complaints...

My sister OTOH... wears so much make-up you could go into a Coma waiting for her to get ready...

I have no problem with makeup. My mother wore very little makeup from day to day, but she did when she dressed up and she and my father went out. My mother's mother wore no makeup, ever. However, my father's mother was the complete opposite. She was always heavily made up, powdered, puffed, perfumed, and well-dressed, even when at home.

These days, I only wear makeup when I'm going out or someone is coming over to visit. What's the point of wearing it when I'm home alone? It's a waste of time and product to apply it. When I'm going out, I wear light foundation, a touch of loose powder to set it, blush, neutral-colored eye shadow, and lipstick. I only wear mascara and a bit of eyeliner beneath my lower lashes if I'm getting dressed up and going to a wedding or some fancy place. Otherwise, I don't bother because I really don't need it, as my lashes are dark and full. To me, being dressed up without wearing makeup makes for an incomplete look.

As lines and wrinkles set in, less is more. Heavily applied make-up doesn't do an old girl any favors.

Finding a coverage foundation for old skin that looks good is hard....I've tried many, I've had pretty good luck with Revlon Age Defying, Loreal Infallible Pro Glo and Milani Conceal, sometimes I mix different ones together with a drop of moisturizer, I wear very little eye makeup....I'd be interested in
knowing if any of you have found a really good foundation that you like and does not settle in the lines on your face.....Oh I forgot, I also like the tinted moisturizer for light everyday wear.

I wear lipstick and some eyebrow powder (my eyebrows are getting really thin). That's it. I don't own mascara, foundation, blush or eye liner/shadow. I don't have enough eyelashes left to make it worth while and there's no way I'm wearing false eyelashes at this point.

I've never worn foundation or powder, but I did wear a little mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow and blush when I was younger.

I wore very little makeup in my teens, just lipstick. I must have been the only teen girl in the world whose mother chased her around and said, "Just let me put a little color on your face, honey!"

Yup

As far as older ladies;
I think, when approaching late '70s, makeup should be used in moderation.
Too much and they start looking like The Joker's gramma
Put down the spackle trowel and let it go
Same with eyebrows
Get that scary surprised look

Get a certain age, countenance comes into play

As for us guys...hey....when it's over, it's over
Time to get funny or stay home

Just my opinion

I've only worn a light makeup for my Friend's wedding. Couldn't wait to wash it off. I have natural Olive skin which
doesn't need makeup. I love the Apricot tones for the Lipstick. I've always used Ponds face cream at night, so I think it's kept the wrinkles at bay for many years. I'm going on 80 at the end of this year and I think I can thank my grandmother for her genes as she had lovely skin and used Ponds face cream for most of her life.

Until I read The Female Eunuch in my 20s I was programmed to do the whole make up thing. My skin was not very clear so the foundation, known as "spack filler" was considered essential. We use to refer to applying full make up as donning the war paint.

After Germaine Greer I decided that I had freedom to wear make up, or not according to my mood. It is not compulsory.

These days I do apply some colour when I know that there will be photos taken that will become important mementos for family members after I am gone. These occasions are few and far between.

I've had oily skin overall with T-Zones on my face. I now suffer from sporiasis and eczema, which used to be on my legs, arms and back. It all super dry on my face and head, when I scratch, it's snowing lol, lol, lol!

But... No despair at wee bit over 60, BB CREAM FOUNDATION, works a treat, filling and blending perfectly when needed. Give it a go, not too expensive and gave me good experience overall...

Thank you for your opinion. I'm down to what I did in my teen years, lipstick, period! Hubby liked what I did, au natural lol!

Congrats on turning 8 years old again... 80=8+0 drop the zero šŸ‘ I'm currently 9 years old 6+3=63 lol!

No bad experience with makeup, I just don't wear it anymore. I dry brush and moisturize. No makeup at all and I would burn the bra if I could :)
Talking about BRAS... I suffered the pain of metal pins from support bras to push and highlight the teardrop girls I've had all my life. Until 5 years ago, I bought a yoga bra-type all elasticated and with a ribbed pattern in various colours.

What a freedom! The pain between has now gone forever, as well as underarms. Keeps the girls up and gives a great outline and support. I recommend to take one size down. Example if large would be it, then go for medium. More support and comfort!

Hi Jackie, I use EstĆ©e Lauder ā€˜Futurist Hydra Rescue’ foundation in Shell Beige, it’s a lovely texture, good coverage, (not matt, which always settles in the facial lines) leaving skin with a natural looking glow

I use Maybelline Fit Me foundation. It has Oil of Olay in it. It gets great reviews and is reasonably priced. They also make a pressed powder, great stuff and soooo affordable.
