I cut the chord in late 2018 and have never regretted it. I average about $38 a month for my streaming services, with most of what I stream being ad free. That is about 25% of what I'd be paying for cable if I subscribed to all the channels I have access to now.
@Lee , you could subscribe to a service long enough to watch a season (or seasons) of what you wish to see, then cancel. And most services now have a free subscription period, from a week to a month, according to the service. I've decided some services I'll pay for all the time (keepers) and some I'll pause or cancel for X amount of months. Netflix makes it really easy to pause with no payment due and your watchlist intact for 10 months. I have:
Hulu Plus... $15.35, a keeper, the No Ads plan...they just went up to $15.35 with taxes. Their plan with ads option is only $7.99 + tax. Free month for new subscribers.
Discovery+.. $6.99 ...all my HGTV shows, ad free, definitely a keeper.
Paramount+ $9.99 I'll cancel it for a few months at a time during the year. Last time I went to cancel, they offered me two months free to stay, so I took that deal.
Netflix $15.49 for ad free. Up from about $12 the last time I subscribed. I've had Netflix on pause for about 4 months.
Amazon Prime video..$0 courtesy of my MetroPCS plan.
The total per month is $47.82 but pausing/canceling for months at a time brings it down to about $38 when averaged out. I would never pay $70 a month for "live T.V." That would mean I'm back paying to see ads, which I can't fathom doing.
As far as local news, I have a few apps on which I can read the local news. The articles sometime include video reports.
