Americans are fat.

I was watching a college baseball game. on TV. Behind the batter, in the stands, there were rows of spectators-both men and women. And they were all fat, well over into the 200+ lb. range. In the first row was at least a ton of human flesh. BTW, I'm 200 lbs, so I'm no starvin' Marvin, either. Okay, so I changed the channel to the Tour De France bike race. I noticed that the spectators were all rather thin. It struck me that people could be thin, I'm so used to fat people. Most of the French were on the thin side, while in the USA, most were fat- anywhere from 50lbs. + overweight.
Americans are way too fat. WHY?

In the US, fat is the norm. It isn't healthy, and is causing illnesses. Why are other nations fitter than the US?
You may not like the answer, which is: Fast food, it's loaded with calories and unhealthy, fat induced, addictive, calorie laden, weight gaining properties. But, and the but is a bit like telling a smoker that quitting is really beneficiary, but it's absolutely delicious! So there you go, enjoy that burger but don't expect a slim waistline!

Fuzz, what do you think is causing fatsomorphism in America? (I made up that word)

And when France's national dishes are considered rich (in calories and cream, I guess), how do you suppose the French stay thin?

An estimated 30 to 40% of Americans are overweight, and about half of them are overweight by 100lb or more. It's just an estimate because they can't weigh everyone in America, and some articles point out that those percentages include people who immigrated from another country and may have been fat when they got here, so it's a questionable estimate.

However, I think everyone can agree that fatsomorphism is real in America.

What do you think is causing it?

Could have something to do with the size of their food portions, which are a bit of a standing joke in Europe. Just saying.

In my opinion, that's only part of the problem.

American cities have no shortage of parks, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and well-equipped playgrounds. They are everywhere. The thing they are short of is dozens of kids playing on them. You don't see that anymore.

When I go to the river, I don't see dads out with their kids doing a little fishing.
When I go to cinema, I see a lot of kids....with snacks.

At least 1/3rd of our health care issues and costs are related to people being overweight. When looking around at the stores, etc., it seems that well over half our people are substantially overweight....and that is people of All ages. Poor diet, and lack of exercise are likely the most common causes. Filling the grocery cart with beer, diet soda and snacks seems to be routine for many people.

Smokers have had to pay extra for health insurance for many years. Perhaps if the overweight people had to pay a substantial surcharge for their insurance, they might start to rethink some of their slovenly habits and lifestyles.

To be honest, I used to weigh in at 240lbs. Seeing the crowd at the ballgame vs. the crowd at the bike race was eye opening. I didn't realize how fat looked so normal. I don't know what the French, and rest of the world are doing or not doing. Years ago, I went to the UK, and everybody instantly knew we were Americans- I now think it was because we were so fat.

Have often commented that others (Americans), tend to daily EAT TOO MUCH, that increases the size of one's stomach and intestines. Not something overweight conscious people tend to acknowledge as they wonder why despite diets and workouts, that bulge down below doesn't much change and always returns after fasting. By doing so, that affects a feeling of fullness when eating. Thus Americans have stretched out the size of their guts that takes more to fill to feel content, full. Conversely, if one regularly eats less, those guts gradually decrease in size after which one will be satisfied eating less. The body certainly doesn't need that excessive amount of food and nutrients that is more about food craving. I've been around 21 to 24 BMI all my adult life, now at 137# for 66".

A reason for overweight in the population: Fast foods are more convenient than a healthy home cooked meal (which includes shopping, prepping, cooking and then the big clean-up after wards. ) Currently, most households need 2 incomes and fast food is inexpensive and convenient (but NOT HEALTHY)

When we grew up (in the 50's/60's) it was a source of gossip if a wife/mother had to work to help support the family. I can't imagine a family surviving on one income today.

Also, THE AUTO IS KING - children are driven to/from ALL ACTIVITIES, including school (fear of being kidnapped???)

re: doggie bags It is required to pick up after your dog - I seldom see dog excrement on our walks. I usually carry extra bags and have offered a bag to a dog walker who was "caught short".

Over here they are used to pick up their dog poo. Few use them and those that do throw them up a tree where they hang like Christmas decorations for months.
Never used one to take food home I admit, just not English and seems rather common :D:D
They're also called Go Boxes, which also lines up with your poo scenario if you want to add a little class to the harvesting.

I think increased weight began when both parents were out of the house working. It was easier to pick up something fast to make or already made like pizza or a bucket full of breaded chicken. The old fashioned mom at home making meals from scratch declined.

The trend continued into the massive amount of fast food places scattered all over America. No doubt high calorie fast food accounts for a lot of what we are seeing now. That and pre made heat & eat meals that are not really healthy just a way to feed the hunger.

Yep, too many of us eat more calories than we burn. The availability of fast rich foods is a lot of the problem, far from the natural human condition, until very recently anyway. We evolved to live in a world with limited food supplies and very active lifestyles, those days are gone but we still carry the genes.
Starvin' Marvin
Used to be a chain of gas stations, still see a sign now and then, however most changed name to Speedway https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedway_(store)

I have lost 3 inches in height over the years. At a similar weight my BMI no longer looks so good.

I agree that a lifestyle of convenience causes overweight and I think America started the king size in everything. Like Pinky and Avon have said, portion size has a lot to do with it.

Plus other countries are known to eat much healthier and be much more active. Many people bike 🚴 in other countries instead of driving and / or walk daily. In general other countries have healthier lifestyles.

Yes, I think the fear of kidnapping could be the reason you don't see kids playing outside anymore.

But about fast food; if you check the labels on your groceries, you'll see some pretty high numbers after the word "calories". But pay attention to "serving size" too. I don't think anybody gives their kid only 2 ounces of breakfast cereal drizzled with 1 tablespoon of milk.

I have wondered about that. You may have lost height but otherwise you body should not have shrunk. Not sure what the appropriate height to use for BMI would be, original or now.
