I'm Glad I don't Live in Phoenix!

I don't know what it is about me, but I really like the heat. I am good up to 109°. I asked my friend in Phoenix what he does all day. He said he runs from the house to the car to the store and back to the car and then back into the house.

There used to be a time when planes wouldn't take off in heat that high. With the new engines and dynamics now, the larger jets can take off in about 120° or better.

‘Contact burns’ from hot surfaces lead to hospitalizations, some deaths

July 5, 2023

Arizona Burn Center officials are warning about roads and surfaces that get blistering hot – literally – in the summer sun, after several years in which contact burns resulted in scores of hospital admissions.

The situation is particularly dangerous for the elderly, people who are homeless and methamphetamine users, who face high rates of exposure and may not be able to help themselves if they fall, said Dr. Kevin Foster, a burn surgeon at the center.

Foster warns that pavement in direct sunlight can reach 180 degrees. “At that temperature it only takes a fraction of a second to get a second-degree burn and exposure to a minute or longer results in a third-degree burn,” he said.

Jokes are made about "dry" heat, but it is something to consider when talking about desert living. It does make a difference.

We lived in Phoenix for years, and loved it ...... did have a big diving pool that got used everyday.
Had a beautiful home surrounded by cactus landscaping, and everyday life there was such easy living.

Phoenix/Scottsdale area is so beautiful.
When my husband got a transfer to Houston, I was upset for a really long time.

And the numbers don't lie ..... Phoenix population is growing rapidly - 5th largest city in the country now.
People keep coming even though water issues for the future continue - same with Vegas.

Me, too! It's one of the reasons i chose northern NM, rather than moving somewhere in AZ to be near grandson. My sons family moved to Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix for DIL's job in 2011. We visited that summer. Too hot for either of us but daughter got to see more of Southern Colorado and Northern NM for when we were discussing where to move after i retired.

Son & Grandson visit for a week most every summer. It has usually been a brief respite from the AZ heat, but not so much this year. We've been having high 90s and hit 100 briefly one day so far.

Back in the early 70's, I was in Phoenix, and the bus I was on, passed a clock tower. It had the time and temperature on it. It was 10:30 PM, and it was 96°. I remember thinking to myself, "If it's 96° at 10:30 at night, what was the temperature at 12 noon? 120°!

The Death Valley experience this summer ....

They don't show in this video, but there are restaurants and hotels in Death Valley.

What does 120 F really feel like?
It feels slightly warmer than the 117 we had the other day. We moved to Vegas because it is warm most of the year. Before choosing where to live we traveled & spent time in several states. Didn't like the cold in the Dakotas. Didn't like the humidity in Florida & Mississippi or the southern tip of Texas. Phoenix didn't offer as much in the way of things to do.

The ability to BBQ on Christmas day is a plus. About two months in the spring & two in the fall our electric bill is not to bad. But now with the 4 ton unit on the roof keeping our home at 78 it really sucks up the electricity. But we planned for that as an expense.

Bottom line no cold, ice & snow, green year round & able to walk everyday in comfort works for us

The Summer heat in the SW is Very uncomfortable, even with low humidity. We've been to Phoenix and Las Vegas in the Summer...but only Once...that was enough for us. Now, if we go to that area, we only go in the Fall, or early Winter.

Give the likelihood of the climate continuing to warm, I can see the day coming when more and more people leave such areas, and move North.

I've never been in a place with 117 degree F temps so cannot say if that makes a real difference.

My aunt from CA moved to AZ and then back to CA because she said they couldn't take the heat in AZ so I guess it's more comfortable in San Diego and lack of humidity does not make a dif in extremely hot temps.
