We got a generous cash offer on our house in South Carolina and an ideal apartment in Washington State became available at the same time. So now I live 5 miles away from my daughter and 18 miles away from my son and his family.
While the sale of the house went fairly smoothly, the trip out here was rough, and it will be some time before I will fly again. The airports were a mess.
We sold the bulk of our furniture and yard tools at an auction which went pretty well. Several items that were shipped ended up being damaged and we are still sorting that out with the shipper. Since this apartment is so much smaller than the house we left, the furniture going into it is also much smaller. LOL, to a large extent we are still living out of carboard boxes right now.
We made a big jump by moving into a Senior Independent Living Complex where all the meals are served in a nice dining room. But there is no more cooking, I don't mow grass anymore or crawl under the house doing repairs. I stay off roofs and sold most of my hand tools. Weekly house cleaning is included along with a host of other things.
Most of the people living here are pretty old, many of them are quite interesting, many of them have some physical limitations. I know that we may be a couple of years early, but the certainty of life in my late 80's and 90's told me that it was time to simplify life.
We sold one car and shipped the other. My declining eyesight tells me that I have a few more years of driving but will eventually have to give that up.
All the details associated with moving across country are overwhelming. Getting new driver's licenses, registering the car, finding new Doctors, and you name it. But eventually, I expect that this will all pay off.
It is nice to be closer to the adult children and to avoid putting them into the position of having to make decisions for me that I may not like.
But this has been very, very time consuming and that is the reason why I have not been posting for the last month.
