We are still settling into our new home in Washington State

We got a generous cash offer on our house in South Carolina and an ideal apartment in Washington State became available at the same time. So now I live 5 miles away from my daughter and 18 miles away from my son and his family.

While the sale of the house went fairly smoothly, the trip out here was rough, and it will be some time before I will fly again. The airports were a mess.

We sold the bulk of our furniture and yard tools at an auction which went pretty well. Several items that were shipped ended up being damaged and we are still sorting that out with the shipper. Since this apartment is so much smaller than the house we left, the furniture going into it is also much smaller. LOL, to a large extent we are still living out of carboard boxes right now.

We made a big jump by moving into a Senior Independent Living Complex where all the meals are served in a nice dining room. But there is no more cooking, I don't mow grass anymore or crawl under the house doing repairs. I stay off roofs and sold most of my hand tools. Weekly house cleaning is included along with a host of other things.

Most of the people living here are pretty old, many of them are quite interesting, many of them have some physical limitations. I know that we may be a couple of years early, but the certainty of life in my late 80's and 90's told me that it was time to simplify life.

We sold one car and shipped the other. My declining eyesight tells me that I have a few more years of driving but will eventually have to give that up.

All the details associated with moving across country are overwhelming. Getting new driver's licenses, registering the car, finding new Doctors, and you name it. But eventually, I expect that this will all pay off.

It is nice to be closer to the adult children and to avoid putting them into the position of having to make decisions for me that I may not like.

But this has been very, very time consuming and that is the reason why I have not been posting for the last month.

@Pecos your move sounds more exciting than problematic IMO. So good to be near your kids, too. It sounds so ideal.... housekeeping, no irksome repairs, meals served, etc. You'll make many friends.
Congratulations on your new place and I'm wishing you many, many years of enjoyment!

Sounds wonderful, Pecos. I think I've finally gotten my Huzz talked into moving, maybe a nice condo. There aren't any condos that he'd be able to stand in my favorite neighborhood (favorite because it's within walking distance of the library, our bank, and a bunch of good, useful stores) but there's a wonderful condo complex in my 2nd favorite neighborhood; now we've gotta wait for a unit to be up for sale. (They don't come up for sale often at the place; maybe that means it's a good place to live.)

The place sounds great, Pecos. I know it's a big adjustment, but instead of the endless upkeep of property, you'll just be able to enjoy yourselves. I wish you and Mrs. Pecos much happiness in your new home.

Congratulations on your move and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Life can be a struggle at times, but with the help of your children, they may be able to lighten the load a bit and make life a little more enjoyable. Having your children and grandchildren (?) nearby will be a major uptick in your life.

Most of all, best wishes and Semper Fi.

All the best to you, in your new home. You've done the hard part, now, all you have to do is unpack. Dealing
with movers is a PITA. Hope they settle fairly.

Enjoy your family! Washington State is lovely :)

@Pecos, I didn't get what "side" of Washington state you've moved to. Regardless, the stores for good, organic food (think snacks") are Natural Grocers and Rosauers. There's also Eggers for organic and natural meats. And, of course, Costco has some organic food.

Congratulation on your new place! It will be so nice for you both to be closer to your kids. You & the Missus take easy after your trip while unpacking. You'll settle in shortly & be at home in no time.

What a huge transition to go through!
Thank you for telling us about it!

You must be thoroughly exhausted, from the planning and the processes, the trip, and the seemingly endless adjustments.

I hope you will settle in and feel at home, but it might take some time!
To recover from it all, first, and then, to actually feel like it's home.

Congratulations on what sounds like a successful move! I'm sure when you are completely settled in thoughts of the airport will be behind and perhaps a source of a good laugh. Great to hear!

Once again, I'm so happy for you and Mrs. Pecos! I can't believe it...seems like just yesterday you were talking about making the move and now you've been there a couple of weeks already! I'm sorry that some of your possessions were damaged. I take it the moving company or their insurance will make it right.

Focusing on the positives, it's great that you are so close to your children. I'm sure they are very happy about that too. I love the "no more cooking" part. You'll make new friends and hopefully all will be as interesting as your initial encounters. No more dealing with home maintenance and repairs. Cardboard boxes aside, you are living the life MDB! Wishing you, your lovely Mrs. and Daisy new adventures and all the happiness life has to offer.

I am in Fairhaven (Bellingham) and can see the Puget Sound when I step out of the door. You are right about the food here, a lot of it is organic. Blackberries grow wild in the little park across the street and are free for the picking.
