Science at NASA

I'd buy that DB but they want over 17 bucks just to ship it. That's nearly twice the cost of the book!
I'll wait till the dog-eared used ones turn up on eBay .

I've been spoilt buying stuff online from China, almost everything is free shipping from there, ain't Gubbmint subsidy for exports great?.

So with this pole reversal ... what's it going to mean to ME? Am I going to have winter in the summer (like those wacky Aussies do)? Are my pants now going to be worn on my chest and head? Will up be down? Will Diet Coke actually taste BETTER than the regular stuff?

Sometimes I get the impression that these scientists are just doing busy-work in order to justify their grants - sort of a publish or perish thing ...

You too eh? DB and I have been getting peppered for years for questioning "the science" on forums. I'm a paranoid cynic, dunno what his excuse is.
It's just that political agendas + scare propaganda + massive amounts of money always = alarm bells to me. The more they spruiked GW the more research I got interested in and the higher the BS meter went.

The sun's polar changes have been happening for billions of years. Climate's been changing on Earth for 4 billion or so. Get over it.
I don't mind them doing something about pollution but please... don't insult our intelligence by bull****ing us that it's only being done to 'stop' the unstoppable.

The video Michael posted stated that the cycle is about every 11 years so cast your mind back that far to decide on your seasonal wardrobe.

All the other stuff has happened before too, on longer cycles, but cycles nonetheless.
...and no, Diet Coke will never taste better than anything except battery acid.

Pole reversal, loss of its magnetic field, is one of the theories as to how Mars lost it's atmosphere...

Yeah, but see, the thing is (at least for as little planetary knowledge that I have) even the Earth's poles undergo "geomagnetic reversals" every so often. I've heard estimates from 100,000 to a million years as the cycle, but I recall from my oceanography classes that it varies: you might have two dozen reversals in a million years, then none for 4 or 5 million.

It's an ongoing, natural phenomenon for Earth; now maybe for the Sun it has a different import. Generally I only concern myself with things I can touch, smell, see or taste, so I'm happy just contemplating my navel as I chow down on those Milky Way bars. :playful:

Don't touch the sun, son. It's hot.

If I can't touch the sun, how about if I moon Mars?

And no, I'm not going to mention Uranus ... actually I read a long article once explaining how we all pronounce that planet's name incorrectly. They claim that the proper pronunciation is UR-ra-nus, not ur-RAIN-us.

Tomato, tomahto ... 27% of my best jokes would be eliminated if I pronounced it that way. :(

I love it when the aliens in cheesy science fiction movies refer to our planet as Earth. Are we really that self-important?

That reminds me of an old Robin Williams bit about the word "Earth" - that to aliens, maybe Earth was a dirty word, like "EEeeewww, you stepped in Earth! Wipe your shoe off!" :playful:

And yes, I think people really believe we're the Alpha and the Omega ...

Then . . . our "Earth" don't stink . . . ???

Oh, it can be a real Earthy experience at times, granted ... we suffer Earth-storms all the time ... but in the end Life is one big Earth sandwich and we are all invited to take a bite.

But some of us just don't give an Earth anymore - perhaps because we have Earth for brains.
