A reality tv star Tarek from the HGTV show Flip or Flop has threatened to evict the residents of an apartment building he plans to demolish and make it his biggest flip. Residents upset and will contest the eviction.

The building is rent controlled. The previous owner/landlord was convicted on federal charges he tried to force them out with violence and intimidation.

Residents also worried a new building were help gentrify a currently affordable area.

OMG what a POS. His trash ex wife was cheating on him with some contractor or someone, I read. They are divorced and he married some similar blond clone. He can go flip his nasty ass off the planet. What a heartless piece of nasty. Would never watch this trash again.

Business is business, anyone who rents is at risk for something like this happening. For most the only protection is in their lease. Apparently as a rent controlled place these tenants get more protection than many.

I still feel bad for the tenants, and this being for a reality show somehow makes it feel worse.
Never heard of him or the show, "Flip or Flop" ? Doesn't sound like I've missed much .
No, not much. I have seen a few episodes, used to call it Tariq and Barbee. Seems Barbee has found greener pastures and moved on...
I don't care much for "Stars". Don't like "influencers" either.
Neither do I, and am not influenced by airheads, which is what most of the so called "influencers" seem to be.

I do like @StarSong , our star!

Can’t stand El Moussa or any of his shows. I do understand why an owner wants to make more money on their investment.

It seems they were all offered decent compensation. As oft happens, the story isn’t totally accurate. Only 3 of the 135 tenants are still there. Last paragraph of the article:

ā€œThe City of LA Housing has sent the three remaining tenants their relocation notices and we will continue to handle any potential move out agreements if desired by the existing tenants during this period of time,ā€ the developer said.ā€

Theyā€˜ve had these renovictions in many cities. The owners have paid $$$ when they didn’t do it by the rules.

In Ontario, a whole group in a small building got together and were trying to buy the building themselves.

Well, gee...ya'll about covered it. I never watched any of their shows, but at first they seemed like such a cute couple. After the divorce they worked together for awhile, then each got his/her own show. I hadn't heard the 411 about her cheating either, not that it was something I'd even be interested in.

@Remy having your own house isn't even a safety net anymore. I read two stories in as many weeks about HOAs issuing foreclosures on properties without informing the residents in the legal manner in the way it should have been done. Both of those people, one of whom is a serviceman who was deployed to Turkey, have lost their homes. Now they must fight in court. To say it would be a major inconvenience for the serviceman is an understatement. Also, if some big wig comes along and wants to initiate imminent domain on properties in a certain area and the city feels it will be financially beneficial, homeowners could have a big legal fight on their hands. Then of course there's missing mortgage and/or tax payments due to some unforeseen hardship.

I never watched that show ... do not watch those of that kind. But @Jules pointed out some facts about the whole thing, that do make a difference . And the 'star' owns the building , as such [he] should be free to do as he pleases with it.

I too hate to see the divide between the income levels broden but ..... denying someone their property/ownership rights [IMO] isn't the way to correct it. {If} it will ever be corrected ..... which I doubt.

Unless one wants socialism ... [ I do not ] we are always going to have the varying financial levels.

As i said to a friend , who was complaining about her boss having too much / earning too much. She said, he has too much, some of it should come back to "us" . I answered well .... somewhere tonight someone is going to sleep in a cardboard box under a bridge .... who thinks you have too much .... that's just life.

Problem is in an inflated housing market the $20-30K won't buy a house or entry into a nursing/retirement home.
One person was there 50 years which sounds like they were a senior.

Also when renting a lot places want the tenant to have a job to cover the rent not pile of money. Some won't even look at bank statements or a letter from bank. And LA is one of those cities where most 'affordable' housing is taken.

Sadly the only good news for apartment seekers/renters is that in LA a ban on evictions expired in July so they might find a new rent which might be at the expense of someone else.

Most reality shows are anything but that. Many of them are staged and very few of them actually do any of the work. Mist are fakes. I get a kick out of the Property Brothers. The one brother swings a hammer like a little girl. He barely hits his target 50% of the time.

Most of those shows are like watching comedy routines until the real contractors take over.

Of course I will take the other side.....

1) HE is not doing the eviction. He is a real estate investor. That is his role, an investor. He one of the partners of NoHo 138 working on purchasing the Hartsook property in North Hollywood for redevelopment
2) Notices to the tenants were served by the current owner, not by him or the partners of NoHo 138. This would have happened regardless of his role as an investor.
3) They will also build low-income units where the existing tenants may have the opportunity to move back in, once the lawyers have reached a final agreement between tenants and builders.

This is nothing but a ploy to target a famous name with false information.
