Bed Rotting. Latest youth/social media trend-stay in bed all day

I used to read in bed late at night as a kid & up at 6AM. ...... :ROFLMAO: ...I would cover the heat register in the floor so parents didn't see my Room lights on...Did that count? Very cold in my room the next morning too. Only way heat got upstairs were the floor vents. When I was older I got paid for working and bought an Electric Heater for my room, thus catching hell for using it...electric bill went up. Room cold in the winter and very hot in the summer.

I don't understand the temptation to do that.
I suspect the idea is inspired by youth in China. About a year ago Chinese youth started a movement called "Lie Flat" because they feel they have no future besides supporting their elders. They feel that way because, due to the old one-child policy, by the time they reach employment age there will be hundreds of retirees for every young employed person.

It's my understanding that, in China, a sizable chunk of people's earnings go to retirees practically directly, plus they're expected to support their own parents....and now they're being pressured by the CCP to have more kids. And raising kids is very expensive there. Example: school is not actually free and neither is daycare....which is actually school.

My grandchildren get recliners in their rooms, they sit there usually3/4 of the day playing ROBLOX etc. The days of kids playing basketball, softball and touch football in the parks seem to have waned to a bicycle sitting on the porch.

They just spent millions here on a new park, huge, cemented parking lot and solar light system Plus solar field. 40 acres, a few lil swings lots of empty space, no soccer or ball fields, no basketball court, just bathrooms and parking and some walking to a bike path that sees a few people occasionally throe it's hundreds of miles network. only people on their phones ambling for a couple of miles or minutes on them.

A small pond about 3 acres to stumble around on hot blacktop. A few places to stop and sit in the sun for a bit and watch the water snakes swim past. It's made the blacktop stamped with the look of red bricks syndrome now.

Maybe once a month some kids will play in a Cul da sac on their boards, while running into mailboxes. Lil power cars and power chairs seem the way of things.

From the article:
"It's kind of like a rejection of productivity culture by doing nothing and taking the time to rest," explained Vanessa Hill, a sleep scientist at BrainCraft.
Also mentioned in the article:
It's a physical and mental health issue

I think that the apathy that is widespread amongst the Gen Z population plays a big part in this scenario. If you go into a fast food place you might run into an order taker who has the demeanor of someone who wants to commit suicide, or maybe would enjoy watching you die, since "your generation" didn't leave them much opportunities for financial success. We ran into such a person in McDonald's in Brattleboro, when we were there recently. I'm not saying all Gen Zers are like that, but the ones that are, are visible.

I just had a conversation with my daughter this morning on the phone. She is 48 and an RN doing research. Her husband is a lawyer. They have 2 boys 16, and 12. She told me that youngest is restricted from using his computer and any social media because he gets locked into sitting there watching the screen. She has him playing sports, and they spend a lot of time outdoors playing. She wants them to engage in REAL life.
They are financially able to pay for their education through college I imagine, so they can live the American dream. What about parents who don't care about that stuff or are to busy to spend time with them. It use to be the TV, and that was bad enough.
Some parents are glad they are "gone" but at home. Games/Internet is the resident babysitter.
( Remember "NO TV, until your homework is done" ) :) The new tech is like a whole adventurous-interactive world of it's own. They begin to live there.

Wow. But at times when I am sick or injured, I will stay in bed all day and people will have a hard time getting me out of it but it's the best and quickest way for me to heal. Maybe there's a measure of escapism at play here too?

Problem is see this with young adults pushing 30 not a teen right out of high school. They're just not sleeping but doing drugs, playing games, watching tv. I want to say agoraphobia but there are so many smaller issues. Some never leave their house or apartment for days. Have a doper here his car didn't move for almost 2 weeks. Looked like it had been sitting a desert dust storm.

It's a new 'thing' to do. Apparently, they forgot about stuffing telephone booths with humans, ( problably couldn't find a booth any longer) or "mannequin". Or the countless ways humans love to do stupid things.
The problem is that's a stunt not a way of life.

The excessive lounging is more than a stupid human trick

When I was young, I would catch a cold and my mom would give me small amounts of Herbs seeped into hot tea. I would rest overnight, and the next day feel a lot better. So, I kept that with me as I moved out of parents' place. Herbs seeped into hot tea or coffee for me. I can count the days I missed from work due to colds on my fingers. What works for me stays with me.

The last time I stayed in bed all day was years ago with the woman I eventually married.
