Who Knew? Some Fun Facts

Polar bears and penguins don't live together.

In Greek Arctic means bear, while Antarctic means the opposite of Arctic (or opposite of bear). Polar bears are found in the Arctic, not the Antarctic. That’s why polar bears and penguins will never meet; they’re found in the north while penguins are found in the south. They are literally on opposite sides of the earth!

“These plants often take seven to eight years to bloom and the flowers only last a few days,” says Ben Robbins, greenhouse horticulturist at Wheaton. “It's the largest flower structure in the world and smells like rotting flesh to attract pollinators.”

The much-anticipated and short-lived blooming is likely to happen the week of July 17 and only last a day or two, the statement said.

"The next time you call something "as American as apple pie," you might want to consider the fact that neither apple pies nor apples originally came from America. Apples are in fact native to Asia, and the first recorded recipe for apple pie was actually written in England."

sloth.jpg

Sloths have an entire symbiotic ecosystem living in their fur made up of different species of algae, fungi, moths, and insects.
The algae and fungi give the sloth a green tint and this allows them to blend into the trees and protect them from sight predators, along with their slow movements.
A sloth produces no body odor and this helps protect them from scent predators.
Research is being conducted on the fungi for disease cures. ( malaria, Chagas disease, and breast cancer )
Different species of sloth moths thrive on sloths living off secretions from the sloths skin and eyes. Sloths only poop on the ground. The moths lay their eggs in the sloth poop.

Canada and Denmark have reached an agreement to divide a tiny uninhabited island in the Arctic, ending a nearly 50-year-long international dispute between two friendly countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly formally signed the deal Tuesday in Ottawa with Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod and Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede. The Canadian government posted an order-in-council this week confirming the Hans Island deal.

The settlement shows the two countries agreed to split the 1.3-square-kilometre rock almost down the middle. A border separating the countries will follow a rift in the island that stretches from north to south.

That's great news, that they came to an agreement. But they'll miss that occasional bottle swap, I'm thinking.

Slide Down Ropes to Safety in New Life Saving Device, 1932

That life-saving equipment need not be elaborate and expensive effectively to remove people from a burning building is demonstrated in the introduction in Germany of a new device called the “servitor” in 1932.

The contraption consists of nothing more than a pair of stout ropes which are hooked to a window frame. Trapped in burning building, the victim can slide to safety on pair of ropes. This sliding is performed in a special gadget having a couple of handles, as illustrated in the photo above. A life belt is strapped about the victim’s middle to insure a comfortable trip earthward.

Tests proved that 30 persons can be rescued in 12 minutes.

10 years of hard work, Indian artist Rajiv Anchal created this 200ft from tail to head and built on top of the 1,000 ft-high Jatayupara towers. Chadayamangalam in Kollam district of Kerala, India.

The Ramayana epic, in Sanskrit, tells a story about a giant eagle of the Ramayana who fell while fighting against Ravana, to save a Hindu goddess Sita. Jatayu died protecting a woman’s honor and that is what the sculpture stands for.
