(In August 1945, eight members of the crew of the USS Barb posed for a photo at Pearl Harbor holding up the submarine’s battle flag. The different patches on the flag represented the boat’s myriad accomplishments over 12 patrols in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Seventeen ships sunk, a Presidential Unit Citation awarded following its 11th patrol, and the Medal of Honor was awarded to the ship’s captain, Cmdr. Eugene Fluckey. But, most unusual, the flag also featured a kill marking for a train. Yes, a train. )

(On the USS Barb’s final patrol of the war, the eight men in the photo had destroyed a Japanese locomotive, a most unusual kill for a Navy submarine.) READ MORE

Rafflesia arnoldii is the world’s largest flower, with a diameter of around one meter and weighing up to ten kilograms. The flower is very rare and not easy to locate, growing only once a year, for five days.

It grows in the rain forests of Asia and the Philippines. The flower is nicknamed “meat flower” and “corpse flower” due to the fact that it looks, and smells, like rotting flesh.

During the Korean war, the Royal Canadian Navy had a number of their ships patrolling off the shores of North Korea, watching for enemy activity on the coastal railway line. HMCS Crusader was the top shooter in the informal "train buster's club ". Yes we Canadians were there, both at sea and on land. Second Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry received a US Presidential Unit Citation for their stand at a ridge, that allowed a large USMC unit to retreat, safely.

"James B. Allardice (1919–1966) was a prominent American television comedy writer.
He is best known for his collaborations with writing partner Tom Adair on a number of highly successful American 1960s TV sitcoms. Allardice also made many contributions to the series Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Not only did Allardice write the lead-ins for all 359 episodes of the show, he wrote many of Hitchcock's speeches during the ten years of their collaboration. In 1966, Allardice died of a heart attack at the age of 46, and that year, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" ended its ten year run."
