Awkward-Smoker hates it when I step outside when they're smoking

Fascinating, Jim, and well past my time! I have no idea when "up spirits" ended but it was a few years after I left the Navy. I didn't respond to the later part of your previous message because my fingers and hands were getting sore, so a quick addition: all those things you mentioned like enhancing your uniform or bleaching the collar are true but weren't a Supply Tech's thing, they were more commonly used by the stokers and bos'n's! :)
I always got a kick out of the USN using the term "Liberty boat " for going men ashore. JimB.

There are no open flames allowed in our apartments and smoke sensors and fire alarms everywhere. Sometimes apartments burn down because of candles.
that's true about the candles.. they are so dangerous.....people light them to fragrance the house and then forget about them.....or people who have animals..cats or dogs who knock these things over.

My daughter who has dogs, wouldn't ever light a candle in her home for that very reason

I smoked for 20 years, and my job was a housecleaner. My costumers were near me quite a bit and nothing was ever said about my smell. They did instruct me to smoke outside if there were no smokers in their house. That was from 1984-2004.

Then a long time customer ( 23 years ) said she had a friend that needed a housecleaner. She then said "I can tell you this because I am a friend. You stink. I want you to clean yourself up before meeting her.". Yikes!!! I then asked my dentist if I smelled offensive. He said he never thought that.

I think this is one of those cultural changes involving offensive behaviors that were once not noticed and we allowed "bad" behavior in public. Things change. I do not like the attitude some have of viewing smokers with contempt. The air is polluted too. Who are we supposed to feel offended by to really show our contempt for ruining our environment?

Some celebrity, I forget who, said that she could smell a meat eater. Jeez, I can smell an elite too, so what?

Some here may remember my posting about the house across the street catching fire last summer. Flames shooting through the roof. Eek. Big local doings with several fire trucks. Turns out the dad was at work, the mom was off that day and took their teenage daughter shopping but forgot about a candle she left burning on a (wood) table. No one home but the dogs.

Between the fire and smoke, plus the water and holes chopped in the roof by the firefighters, there was a lot of damage so the family had to move out immediately. The firefighters got the dogs out safely, I'm happy to report.

All the neighbors were greatly relieved that it was a calm day with no wind. Had it happened a couple of months later during Santa Ana wind conditions, that candle fire could have taken out half the neighborhood.

After having a hay pasture burned by a careless smoker we do not allow any smoking on our property at all anywhere, the man never paid us a cent for the loss of our hay ($4500), (50 round bales) so 1 person less in my life due to being a smoker. The hay cost more than that to replace it hauling and such, fuel. I have no friends that smoke left. I am very anti smoking here.

I have had no smoking signs around my barns for years which is required by my insurance company. I've also seen too many grass fires over the years along the interstates where cigarette butts were tossed out of vehicle windows when it's been dry. These roads are adjacent to farm fields filled with crops.

IMO it seems that too many times the people who smoke appear to be either clueless, thoughtless or ignorant of the fire hazard their habit can cause to all kinds of places.

As far as the smoke, it's bad enough to smell cigarette smoke but now it includes the noxious smell of marijuana. I've never smoked & even as a kid I had problems with headaches when I was around smokers. As I got older, it's even worse.
