I watch "How the Universe Works" and "Wonders of the Solar System" on the Science Channel. There is always talk of "Earth-like" exoplanets that could be habitable, or creating an atmosphere on Mars, etc. so that Mankind can survive on a new home.

My thoughts: how about we FIX this planet(Earth), it's close by and convenient, we're used to it, we wouldn't have to pack up our stuff to move somewhere else. shrug.gif

I really, really wish I had a more optimistic view of humanity, but I don't think all the technology in the world will save mankind. I have seen the nature of man, and my outlook is grim. The human species is a violent one, and collectively is ruining the planet we live on. Too many seek power, and it corrupts absolutely. I hope more than anything that I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
 
It's absolute power that corrupts absolutely, I think the phrase goes.
I struggle with misanthropy every day. Very discouraging.

I'm going to try to be on the lookout for more successful endeavors for the betterment of society.

I don't think they are planning on taking all of us.
 
Basically, the world is more or less doomed. The god called technology wouldn't save us. We have raped and pillaged this planet to the point of no return.

Don't believe me? Call me unreasonably negative. Just read or view the news: global warming, over population, mass migration, drug overdoses, gun violence, war in Ukraine and many other places, the rich getting richer and richer, mass starvation in many countries of Africa, fires in Western Canada, floods in SW USA, earthquakes in Morocco and thousands drowning in Libya.

Grim picture? You betcha!

The more I look into experts looking into the possibility of humans living on another planet, the more I'm convinced they aren't doing it so we can escape Earth if things go horribly south, but to get closer to planets with valuable resources so we can exploit them (too).

Humankind has repeatedly swung back and forth between periods of excess evil and periods of excess greatness, maybe forever. I could be wrong, but I don't think that pendulum will ever cease.
 
"The Expanse" is still a little known TV series that came out about 8 years ago.

It is science fiction of the "grounded" sort, what used to be called "science fiction with rivets" or "hard science fiction." Humans have few magical gadgets like "transporters" or "warp drives" or "artificial gravity." No caped spandex heroes. AI is prevalent but kept subservient because of the mass job loss it had led to. It is set a few hundred years from now.

While the main story lines (which eventually more or less converge over time) are interesting, the politics and the human condition are the stars. Despite settling Mars and venturing into the asteroid belt for resources, people haven't turned into angels. Plenty of territorial conflict, differences on how to organize societies, valuing of self determination, and income inequality.
 
I'm not sure where post #15 above was originally supposed to go, but I don't think it was here. Anyone else seeing posts leap through hyperspace like that, or am I more senile than I had imagined?
 
society ...hmm..well...i think society is driven..and it depends on who's doing the driving..the laws that are enforced...the people's acceptance of the wrong values...
for success or failure of society
the planet is another question
