70,000 stranded in the desert because of rain.

Which means they'll probably leave even more trash behind than usual. Because despite the organizers' 'Leave no trace' mandate to attendees the communities near the site have been complaining for years about the 'traces' of their visit being left in those communities if not on site.

I saw this on the news. It's wild! Chris Rock was among them but he walked 5 miles then was picked up by someone in a van. According to the article, it was a fan of Diplo, a popular deejay, not Chris. I feel for those people...no clean bathrooms close by, no running water and probably low on food. As my mother used to say..."Wouch!"

One person died which is not a laughing matter @hawkdon!

I agree with feywon, the trash must be bad. Despite what is required.

The last place I'd want to go is a crowded place like that.

I've heard of clean ups on BLM land. People leave trash behind. There are clean ups. I don't get people.

If they don't get out soon, it'll turn into Lord of the Flies.
And If they run out of condoms and Narcan, there'll be a real crisis.
Until then, I imagine some of them are enjoying the misery ... at least until it gets a little past real.

Never let a crisis go to waste ...
T-shirts in production: I SURVIVED THE GREAT FLOOD Burning Man 2023

The whole ethos of the event is radical self reliance. Now they’re getting their chance.
The tech bros in their luxury camps looking to gawk and party are getting a cold slap of reality from mother nature.
Don’t screw around in the desert.

What are the names of these communities that have been complaining for years?

Use your favorite search engine, I used DuckDuckGo and just typed Burning man and top result was a Yahoo article that mentioned complaints from previous years but also had results about govt agency BLM complaining to organizers and about surrounding communities.

The burningman org. will have people out there digging trash out of the mud for the next month. That will put about fifty homeless to work with good food provided. Leave no trace is the goal but in any city of 73,000 there are always jerks who do not care about anything but themselves.
Look at the mess left at any event that is just a day or two long. The people that are getting stuck are off of the marked roadways. Against recommendations they head off across the slimy clay with regular hi-way tires. Part of the orgs. permit is that no tracks be visible on the playa. Those fools are making it hard on the people trying to do the right thing. The dead guy was dead before the rains hit so he passed by some other natural cause. In other years we lost guys to things like drugs or stupid.
The complaint from many communities in the area and road side rest spots is the trash dumped there. Burningman says take your trash with you but they do not say how far. The org. may soon be required to place trash bins in the city. They do not like to compromise the self reliance of the festival but they have had to provide portable toilets, ice, coffee and medical staff.
I applaud those who do not let the mud detract from the art and fellowship of the event. When you get done looking at the muddy people be sure and check out the amazing art that is probably on page nine now.

"Burning Man is Silicon Valley"

Burning Man has attracted a number of billionaires and celebrities, many of them from Silicon Valley and Hollywood.[232] It has become a networking event for them,[233] with Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk once stating that Burning Man "is Silicon Valley."[232]
Burning Man - Wikipedia

Burning Man (8 days): $575 + $140 vehicle pass + fees [tickets must be bought in advance, otherwise you can't go in]
Where Does My Ticket Money Go? [575 +140 = $715 x 70,000 people = $50 million]

On the right side of the heading "1990 to 1996" is a reference to a lengthy video clip that shows nude group scenes "8mm film footage of Burning Man in 1995 by Ammon Haggerty."

Is it an exclusive club for the upper class and we are left out? In the 1980's I would have gone if I had known about it. But now I probably would feel uncomfortable and out-of-place.

The floods this year have created a mess, but I wouldn't be surprised if many are being rescued by private helicopters.

I walk my own beat so you will never catch me at these massive money making schemes for the rich. Don't like crowds either so I always stay away from these type of events. I could say, "Serves 'em right" when it comes to the rain and the mud but I wouldn't because really I'm a nice guy! Ha, ha, ha!

It is a place that the ultra rich can mingle and have a great time just like everyone else. People who have not been there are just regurgitating what they hear from other people who have not been there.
The CEO can have just as much fun as the old hippie or the girl in the space suit. What would you wear if there was no one to judge you? I have been an arabian prince in flowing white robes, a cowboy in chaps and a gold thong. Bold black and white stiped shorts, yellow legs, a rabbit skin vest and my long hair was blue with a jester's hat. You should have seen the look on my accountant's face when he saw Paster Bob in that outfit as a flagger directing traffic to help people get on the road home.
If you camp in a tent and eat cold beans you are still at the most amazing place on earth. If you go out on the playa and get caught in a dust storm and have to hunker down in an art car, packed together under blankets till it blows past, you are having the same experience whether you go back to camp and take a sponge bath or a shower in a million dollar RV. One of you is cleaner.

Part of Burningman is living without judgement. Not judging others or caring about their opinion. It is a beautiful freedom when everyone is on board. Yes, it is dusty but it adds a little tang to each meal! Techno blast from speakers ten feet tall everywhere. The art is unbelievable that people actually create such things.
My playa name is Starman, You are given a name that fits you there and who you are in the real world does not matter.

If I’m quoting you,( not another media article), I believe you. A little something for everyone.
