Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey face backlash for asking fans to donate to Maui fund

Start a boycott of all Oprah & Dwayne products is the only way to get their attention if that is what one is seeking to do. I don't see any reasons for doing that but it's the only thing to do

The only thing to do is help in whatever way you can.
Who are we to stand in judgement of others good will......we are not God, nor should we try to act like him in our judgement of others. @Paco Dennis
 
Ok, they gave a pittance ? a small fraction of their wealth ? How much are y'all going to give ? I gave $300 to a local disaster help group. Doesn't match Oprah & the Rock .... but , they started it and it all adds up.
 

There were something like 60,000 comments to the Instagram announcement. The report says that a host of people complained about them not giving more. Why did they complain? That is the story...not that it was right or wrong, good or bad. What could possibly be the motive to complain about the relief fund? People complained, that is the story. It happened, and they are real complaints. I am not judging this situation, but I do see a trend that many people are getting quite angry about the wealth gap. In fact inequality is a huge problem. There is a push back occurring about how the privileged folk with tons of money get what they want, and the masses settle with inferior care.

No, the inequality gap is a made up by politics to separate classes, nothing more.
If you want to use that measurement, then lets look at the preferential treatment less successful people get.
Preferential treatment when it comes to jobs
Reverse discrimination
Government handouts
welfare,
food stamps,
cash checks every month,
subsidized housing,
subsidized medical (sometimes free)
All on the backs of successful people that pay for the 'inequality'.

The Constitution of the United States, a document drafted by forward-thinking individuals who appreciated the dangers of tyranny, does not promise equal outcomes. Rather, it guarantees equal rights and opportunities.

Illegal aliens in California get the most benefits totaling $2.9 billion, all paid for by successful people.
 
For the record, I have no axe to grind against either Oprah or The Rock. In fact, my impressions of both have always been favorable.

The two stars were compelled to launch the fund in part because they were fielding questions from people close to them about which foundations would provide the most immediate help to those affected.

“I know a lot of people out there ... are just having a hard time trusting where the money goes,” Johnson said. “The fund that we created ... is a clean direct from you, directly to their hands, and right away with some real immediacy, because as we’re finding — that you guys around the world know — with disasters like this, the No. 1 need is money.”

“So people being able to have their own agency being able to make decisions for themselves about what they need, and when their family needs. That’s our goal is to get that to the people now,” Winfrey continued in the video. “And so we appreciate any support you can give. All the people who are calling me and texting me and messaging me and saying, ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ This is what you do!”

As I said in my earlier posts, context is everything. I should have done further research before commenting. My apologies for not looking deeper, sooner.

Its justifiable 'thing'. We are tired of being taken advantage. Where illegal aliens get a $2,200 check every month, not working a day in their lives in the US and retirees average $1,600 a month after working 35+ years. And they say Social Security will run out of money. Of course it will when they are trading dollars for future voters.

Glad not everyone feels that way, NO charity would ever receive a penny from business fund raising.

Even with these noble intentions and actions that they set in motion ( which is MUCH needed ), WHY are people complaining? I am sure that many of them know the context of how this came to be, but the complaints are not being addressed. Are those complaining "crazy"?
I know many here are not going to like this, but it is well known that in civilizations where the wealthy tower high above the masses, that many "love" the wealthy because they are so powerful. They provide for the poor. It gets to the point of worshipping and "brown nosing" the rich. ( If you don't believe this, do some research ) It is very similar to the "Stockholm" syndrome. People begin to "love" their captures. These complaints are a sign that our societies have had enough of this unfairness, and blatant privilege/power.
Everyone has this wonderful image of Warren Buffet being such a great human being, and wonderful philanthropist. He disowned his grand daughter because she exposed his "real" life in a film about the wealthy's privilege's and power.
 
Has Ben and Jerry’s given back to the Native Americans the land that the B&J offices and factories are now on? They publicly called for returning the land.

Why anybody would give to help the poor or needy because some celebrity calls for it is beyond me. Give because it‘s the right thing to do as you see fit.
 
These two celebs contribute to a lot of different charities, not just the Maui Fund. I wouldn't say they were being chintzy with their money.

Every one is a tax shelter for them. That is to their advantage. Plus just like fascism the private sector is abolishing the public sector. Support this way of running our society and only the wealthy will make good, and eventually take over control of EVERYTHING.
