The Billionaires Are Going Bunkers

I find Elon Musk to be the second most offensive billionaire right after Trump. The idea that someone with enough money can make decisions which affect or even undermine U.S. foreign policy is crazy. Why is he not in chains?

But truly the world has gone crazy meaning, of course, so many of us have. Old institutions and conventions can't hole back the crazy any longer.
To be fair, the US should have gotten on the EV wagon way earlier than we did; a decade earlier, at least. We got into manufacturing too late and the incentive programs offered too little and were short-lived.

I read a book or article by a climate/weather scientist--can't remember who, sorry-and he had a list of places which will be the first hit by rising sea levels and therefore forced migration by those living there. He got an appointment with someone at the CIA (the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency) and without saying what line of work he was in or why he was asking, asked if the CIA person could give him a list of the places in the world that they were most concerned about as to political turmoil/upheaval, etc. The CIA guy said sure, gave him a list and it was the same exact places on the rising sea level list. So everybody knows.

I agree completely except for the "unwoke" remark! The unwoke are well aware (except for some conspiracy theory fanatics who refuse to believe anything that doesn't fit their world view) that disaster is just around the corner unless we change our ways drastically. It's the "woke" who are blissfully unaware of their wordly surroundings because they are too busy at the moment discussing gender politics!
I disagree.

The world’s billionaires aren’t waiting for death anymore. They're building luxury bunkers everywhere, even as it becomes painfully clear these bunkers won't save them. A tiny handful of entrepreneurs are cashing in on the paranoia. One company called Oppidum will build a bunker under your mansion now, complete with a hydraulic ramp so you can drive your sportscar down there. They describe themselves as "optimistic about the future," and yet their entire business model sells doom. Their bunker even airlocks.

Demand for luxury bunkers has spiked 1,000 percent thanks to events like the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Ah, yes. It's a fabulous idea to bury yourself alive in an airtight sarcophagus instead of trying to prevent the need for it in the first place. In the end, it's an exercise in futility. Oppidum isn't building anything that could survive on an uninhabitable planet. They're offering comfort to soothe the elite panic of billionaire clients. It's a business.

That's all.

Meanwhile, flowers are blooming in Antarctica. Ice isn't forming. It's supposed to be winter in the southern hemisphere, but South America has been seeing temperatures above 100F for months. Scientists say humans have never observed this kind of winter before.

It's one in 7 million, a five sigma event.

It's blowing their minds.
...
Survivalism and prepping have gone mainstream over the last few years, with roughly a third of Americans now spending up to $11 billion a year on survival tools and emergency kits, including food buckets. One group estimates the market for "emergency management" will double by 2025. Prepper sites are reaching new demographics, including young urban women.

The Kardashians even started plugging emergency kits specially designed for "the unprepared," and they charged up to $250.

Costco sells one for $6,000.

Honestly, it's a little eerie to see someone apply a goop-style brand to prepping and survivalism. They even sell "hurricane kits."
...
The rich have been planning for a long time. Several years ago, The New Yorker did a story on their doomsday plans. They include stocking up on crypto and taking archery classes. They get together over wine and brag about their bunkers to each other. The story talks about one real estate investor who stumbled across "radical self-reliance" at Burning Man.

We saw how that turned out.

I often wonder who the world will adapt to the rapid changes we are experiencing now. The classes will behave much differently. We are poor ( not destitute ), and old, so I am not doing much prepping. We will just adjust enough to ride out the storm. It so complex I can't see the future at all. From most reliable sources it seems we are in the first part of a hell of a storm though. Hunker or Bunker?:)

"Yea!"

Money and brains often don't go together. Face the facts; we;re all gonna die sooner or later. Wealth will never save us. We're all doomed, Bill Gates, Murdoch, Silvester Stallion, Putin, King Charles, Justin Trudeau, all those movies stars with the white teeth and you and me.

I have no proof but I think that too much money which screws up your brains and you lose all common sense. Live your life today and stop trying to alter your destiny. We're all going to be equal 6 feet underground.

Someone will extend life. And extend it further and further with each success that is achieved more will be expected. Mr. G. has his fingers in multiple pies and loves to control people as any windows (renter) has learned over the years. He wants to block the sun's rays, and make us plebs eat bug meal/flour whether we like it or not while he dines in places like this on the best of everything at taxpayers expense. Yes that is Versailles.

Billionaires are not the only ones worried. I had a selfish view of Global Warming at one time. Hey, that's great, Canada can stand a bit of heat, but what did we get instead in the Maritimes? More hurricanes, wildfires, record cold, record heat, and more floods then ever recorded in our history. All (except for Fiona) in one year!

Then I am reading about Pacific Islanders scrambling for higher ground because the lower areas are gradually being flooded, unprecedented heat and drought and wildfires throughout Southern Europe. Large areas of Africa suffering crop failures, monstrous floods in South East Asia!

And yes I am worried! Not about myself but about the future of my children and grandchildren.

Will a bunker do anyone any good? Maybe for a year or so, after that the billionaires will probably come out from sheer boredom, after all you can't spend money in a bunker, and hopefully feel some regret that they didn't spend some of their loot on reducing the use of fossil fuel and promoting eco-friendly alternatives instead!

There will be one in particular who might regret having promoted the reopening of coal mines for the sake of some votes. One hopes!

Can you explain? I'm wondering if you're seeing it as I am?
The woke see the problem. The unwoke don't. If the unwoke see the problem, they cannot be the unwoke. They have to be the woke. Old salt has another interpretation of woke than I do in this situation. I don't care to get into it. It's pointless.

I am glad someone else 'gets it'! We all are destined to die! All this BS about rich vs. poor, woke vs. unwoke, etc. etc.

Life is not fair; it never has been or will it ever be. Some have more than others, some live longer than others, some are happy, some are not...but in the end we all die. Death is the great equalizer, you can delay death sometimes, but you cannot avoid it!

So stop worrying about who has what and enjoy each day you have, because some day, will be your last day!

I agree with this sentiment for sure. I felt like the article in the OP was not about worrying about how much money one has if/when when things go south. Let's apply that to these billionaires. They have the means to do pretty much as they please. These are folks who are investing a lot of dough in surviving some kind of calamity in the near future. These are people who basically run the governments with their contributions to powerful politicians and corporations.

Why are they spending so much time and money on bunkers? Do they know something us regular people don't? I don't agree that they have screwed up brains anymore than anyone else. I think NOT being concerned about our collapsing planet is a little screwed up. It is about an extinction event that is happening right before our eyes. the message I gleaned was that everyone will have to prepare and adapt as best we can no matter how much money they have.

The "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you may be dead" meme is not going to be easy. Personally I try to be as alive as possible every moment, and that includes enjoying and taking care of my environment. I have made peace with death. Preserving our environment for future generations is important to me. I think it goes with liking to be responsible for other people and our environment.

I am starting to see your interpretation of unwoke. So, actually there's no disagreement that I can see! To me woke means too much emphasis on being personally slighted or offended, or fighting for the right to be called "they!"

That's why your "unwoke" (a word I had never come across before) seemed like the opposite to me. In other words: unwoke = everybody who is unselfish enough to see the greater picture! And I too won't squabble over minor differences. I am saving my strength! :) ☮️

Woke comes from awake (he woke up = he was awakened). The opposite of that is an unconscious state that has nothing to to with unselfishness or some grandiose image of self. The person is asleep and not aware of what is going on. Unless it is used to slur, but it's not a very good slur, because accusing some one of being awake implies that the person using the word as a slur values unawareness more than awareness.

The misunderstanding came about because the original meaning of woke changed over the years. Originally it meant being aware of (awake to) racial inequities now, for many folks, it means all that I have quoted above! Honest misunderstandings happen when meanings change on us! Peace, brother!

Same way with MAGA. 'some' people think 'Making America Great Again' is a negative.

This all comes down to people having a very 'media centric' view of successful people.
These aren't people laying in dollar bills throwing it above their heads like you see in movies.
These are people that invest in companies, technology, research and development of life saving medicines. They employ millions of people that take care of their families, send their kids to school, pay for food and shelter.
So, if you are going to bash successful, actually think what they provide to the economy , to the world.
Stop watching TV shows, they are not real.

'Woke' is a political word, a pejorative and a slur when used by the opposite side. Personally, I try not to use the word.
