Doom scrolling: a damaging compulsion

Doomscrolling or doomsurfing is the act of spending an excessive amount of time reading large quantities of negative news online. In 2019, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that doomscrolling can be linked to a decline in mental and physical health.

The practice of doomscrolling can be compared to an older phenomenon from the 1970s called the mean world syndrome, described as "the belief that the world is a more dangerous place to live in than it actually is as a result of long-term exposure to violence-related content on television". Studies show that seeing upsetting news leads people to seek out more information on the topic, creating a self-perpetuating cycle.

In common parlance, the word "doom" connotes darkness and evil, referring to one's fate (cf. damnation). In the early online days, "surfing" was a common verb used in reference to browsing the internet; similarly, the word "scrolling" refers to sliding through online text, images, etc.Though the word "doomscrolling" is not found in their dictionary itself, Merriam-Webster is "watching" the term—a designation for words receiving increased use in society that do not yet meet their criteria for inclusion. Dictionary.com chose it as the top monthly trend in August 2020.The Macquarie Dictionary named doomscrolling as the 2020 Committee's Choice Word of the Year.
Popularity

The term gained popularity in the early 2020s through events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the George Floyd protests, the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol, and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, all of which have been noted to have exacerbated the practice of doomscrolling.

Doomscrolling became widespread among Twitter users during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has also been discussed in relation to the climate crisis

Yes… doomscrolling has become the pastime of many.
Reading negative news stories and social media posts feeds into the psyche of some. It reinforces negative thoughts and feelings.

When you feel depressed or anxious, there is a tendency to seek out news and information to confirm those feelings. It’s a harmful cycle that keeps you feeling low.

In 2019, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that doomscrolling can be linked to a decline in mental and physical health.
Several studies have recently supported the 2019 one.

Doomscrolling is certainly an addiction… like people who are depressed may seek out foods that are not good for them, but suit their mood.
.

There is an entire Doom population that varies from drastic to "warnings". Some people are addicted to scenarios of impending collapse of "you name it" and people discuss and argue about too much. On the other hand avoidance of reality, even when it is "bad" is unhealthy. I think we need to be open to the dark as well as the light. Dwelling on either and believing like one is better than the other is a distorted understanding of life.

We tend to seek out people who have similar temperaments to our own. We don't like our comfortable feelings to be shaken. Life throws us some big curve balls and for some they are not hittable. Even though some of humanities deepest problems, global warming, economic hardship, and health issues can be very bleak, we must address these problems. That is the way life is unless your born with a "silver spoon" in your _ _ _ _ _." :)

Doomscrolling is like spending hours on YouTube when listening to the politics on that channel. It's good entertainment, but you better know the difference between b.s. and reality.

YouTube has a lot of good stuff on it for the DIY guy, but otherwise, it's full of nonsense on the political side. And, I also noticed a lot of baiting on that channel.

I would need to have "excessive" defined here... because if we don't follow the nasty news as well as the unicorns and rainbows "all's well in lalaland" news, we have our heads in the sand. I wonder how much of this trendy word (doomscrolling) is simply a new buzzword of the year? Ignoring negative news isn't going to make it go away... it's still going to be there, and I'd rather be informed. Looking away and being oblivious doesn't seem to be wise.

My disclaimer is that I'm talking about *following* negative news... not sitting for hours scrolling and being obsessive.

Very true.
Certain factions working for the government NEED to track, follow, and get in the weeds relating to doomsday scenarios.
We have been tracking terrorism for decades, long before it was a household word.
Because of that immersion, there are scenarios that have had deep scrutiny and, more importantly, program, policies, and preparations put in place for things that most Americans can't even fathom happening.
Most people have no idea what happens behind the scenes when an event happens, or the hours/days/years planning on how to mitigate the impacts.
Some people need to get into the ugly side of doomsday events to be able to deal with them.
When shocking things happen, not everyone is panicing.

Of course when one wishes to dissuade people from hearing information and opinion differing from "the official truth" demonizing such sources (historically, quite literally) is a time honored practice. There are good arguments on both sides of the question. One is just as likely to fail by bowing down to Big Brother as rejecting those words and putting trust in alternatives though.

It ain't easy.

I'm finding well established and respected voices that just years ago nodded right along with every official pronouncement... who have since flipped 180 degrees as they encountered truth after truth that contradicts given doctrine. They find no joy in this. It leads them to a suspicion about Word after Word handed down by gatekeepers.

There are probably just as many voices shouting messages with no more basis than the desire to stand atop some soapbox.

We have entered a new AI world in just a few short years. The "CLOUD". Digitized currency that is making our money invisible. :) I wonder how much activity is going on in the Cloud.? It might be getting an intelligence of it's own.? As this happens, the plebs and masses are forced into living much of their lives there. If one is interested in "anything" you can investigate. It's up to you. On the way, there on many detours. Some may lead to unexpected revelations, some will seem ridiculous, and some are pretty close to what you are interested in.

Within a short time, I think the hand held smartphone is going extinct. You will be able to interface with the cloud immediately, and with increased accommodations to your desires.

How then will you find the "truth"? Mankind had better start regulating AI. We the people need to speak up about big money advancing AI for their own greedy profits.

Not content with doomscrolling, some people (they know who they are...) seem to revel in posting lots of negative or distasteful news stories on various forums. One learns to hone one's internal filter pretty quickly as a result
That’s it in a nutshell !!!

Some people are not satisfied with appeasing their insatiable appetite for gory news … they seem to think others want to share the details so it is reported again and again on forums is one example.

Of course it makes sense to know what is happening in the world and one’s own immediate surroundings, but to dwell on some of the stuff in the news is simply unhealthy.

there is a big impact already
i volunteer on a mental health site and especially young people are overly anxious and depressed by absorbing the DOOM style reporting/ stories and never coming up fro air to take a look around them .... they are completely losing it over maybe/ could happen..... if you do not have this or that done by some X age .... you missed it.

This is a reality where habits of mindfulness and meta-thinking are helpful. As others have mentioned we need to have some clue what is going on in the world, but learning to give little if any time/energy to any article, whether political, social or supposedly scientific, the title of which is clearly trying to tell you how to feel about the info within it is crucial.

Recently someone posted on FB about a book titled: The World Was Always Awful; A Guide to World History for People Who Romanticize the Past. My response began:
If by 'the world' the author means people, humans, the primary title is true. Individually and in groups humans are capable of both horrendous atrocities and acts of great compassion. Romanticizing either is a mistake but balance is called for today more than ever.

The good news is the same device that facilitates Doom Scrolling can facilitate Pragmatic (looking for the facts) Scrolling and Pollyanna/Optimistic Scrolling--looking for true news/facts that foster some hope for humanity becoming more humane with each other and other life on this planet. Both of which can offset the doom and gloom stuff.

Just as our physical health can be impacted by what we eat and what activities we engage in, so our mental/emotional well-being can be impacted by what we choose to feed our minds, and how we choose to use them.

Not heard this term before, but boy it's bad (and sad). It's gotten so bad people actually think the entire world is falling apart, and nothing good ever happens. It also creates all kinds of conspiracy theories as people try to make it make sense.

I don't tend to do it though.

There sure is enough bad news to doom scroll through. One reason I love World News Tonight is that after the bad news stories, which are delivered short and (not so) sweet, they end the program with heartwarming, inspiring, even funny ones about ordinary people who are doing remarkable things. A few years back, I had stopped watching the news for a while but realized, I need to at least have an idea of what's happening in the world and especially in areas close to home.

They say same electronic gamers similar things with the game just playing mindlessly for hours on end just playing at lower easy levels staring at the screen.

There is a game I play sometimes while listening to music (it's called 2048 Solitaire). It's a simple game, not complex. One day I was listening to a lot of music and I went on "auto mode" with it. That is, I was playing the card without really thinking about what I was doing. In other language, I'd say I "hit a groove". During that time I scored 306.57.

Next day I started it up with a goal of beating the high score, and I found I couldn't get anywhere near that. Ever since, I can't get near. During the "staring at the screen" something made sense that no longer makes sense. It's a fascinating thing. I guess what I'm saying is, it may look like someone has phased out, but in reality they may simply be in a groove, where you're doing things without having to second guess or calculation.

When I was little and watched a scary or rough show on TV, my mother would say, " Now you have to watch a 'nice' show so you don't have nightmares."
I suppose if I watched 'The Rookies" I would then have to watch 'The Love Boat'. 🙂

i have to laugh because when my boys were in 2nd or 3rd grade they were spending Halloween night with my sister because i was going to a grown-up Halloween party with the man who became DH#2. They wanted to watch a scary movie they'd seen an ad for the day before, and my sis said "Oh, No that will give us all nightmares." to which they replied: "You mean you don't know how to change your nightmares or at least wake up from them?" Because they'd been doing it for a good 3-4 yrs at that point, i taught them. Taught their sister when she was about 4 yrs too.

Thanks @Nathan for starting this thread I missed earlier. Quite agree and it addresses @Rose65 more recent thread.

The impact of constant news of war

...Indeed. Don't let news media feed your mind. Have the self control to not contaminate and pollute your mind....Due to neural plasticity, we are what we feed our minds with. Not only what we actually act on but also what we merely watch.

Unfortunately most have not come to understand this and rather think anything they watch on tv, news, film media including porn and gore is just for their own internal amusement and won't affect them otherwise. But NO NO and NO. Our Earth creature brains do not work like that.
