Well if we all start paying for a hot dog using a Card we'll very quickly become a cashless society, when that happens you give control of your money to the government.. when you have no control over your money you have none over your life....
 

During pandemic times I stopped leaning on cash. I still carry it, but I haven't gotten back into the habit of using it for small purchases. I'm getting better, but I still tend to make the joke "You do still take cash, right?" But that probably comes from being an old fart, and one pretty challenged when it comes to small talk.

I remember when my kids were young. Oh, they used to hate it when their mother or I talked to store clerks and such. Maybe I'm too old to remember being that way with my parents. Probably because back then kids didn't get away with much backtalk or commentary.

i watched video but seriously if getting a wad of cash i would not use an ATM.......why do people feel safe doing that a camera ? seriously this guy has a whole video but he has to realize these guys did not get the cash but they do know where he lives and if house is worth breaking into....

IF in bank i would be alert to how many ears/ eyes are close......
I have been in line and a very careless teller sometimes was loud enough they should take into consideration of their customer... i did tell the manager that if someone else heard ........might take an interest in following that guy....because teller was too loud.

in a bank i am sure they would notice a group loitering waiting to find/ pick their mark.
pumping gas and not alert to the other side of car.......... even your purse... is a big do not do ........ let alone if you got a big cash envelope.

While it may seem blaming a victim... people need to see they are their own BEST line of defense ..... in almost every situation

I agree to an extent.. but how does an elderly woman protect herself.. when she's done her banking, then put it safely in her car in a Bag or packet.. and LOCKED the car... prevent herself from robbers who are willing to smash her windows to get to her money...?

They seem to know she had the envelope ... so they stalked her at ..... ATM? Bank? even a store if they see a bank envelope with a logo on it.

many will smash and grab just for a purse left in plain sight. let alone a big bunch of cash ...... imagine having to replace window over a purse that did not even have much or any cash money....

People IMO even though warned etc think this happens to the other guy/ gal .... until it happens to them .
if i walk through a parking lot i can see people leave items in plain sight for a quick run into store... even some thinking they are safe will walk and lock in trunk easier pop then breaking a window.
If I can see it someone dedicated to theft as their source of income see it faster and clearer then my casual observations.

yes that's what's happening. This jugging is the robbers who are stalking people from ATM's and Banks to their homes.. now if you can't go into a bank and withdraw money safely, put it into a locked car.. without being followed home and robbed at gunpoint, or having your car windows smashed for them to get it ... then we have complete anarchy...

I agree with HoIly. I get tired of these news pieces that end by telling you (in so many words) to be ever paranoid and live your life in fear. I refuse to do that.

I'd like the pieces to end by saying law enforcement is cracking down on this and sentencing to the full extent of the laws against armed robbery. I don't care if the prisons are overcrowded. Weren't we promised that if we legalized marijuana that problem would be solved? Welcome juggers, your beds are waiting.

legalized MJ did not solve any of those issues or in my area did we see all the false promises for vote materialize. ....
there is a difference between observant and being cautious ........and being paranoid....

ATM are in full view ........same as asking for cash back in a line at a supermarket ..... most are so wrapped up in themselves they do not think of their surroundings...
going into bank may be safer / holding cash somewhere on body other then purse. these ideas have been used since i was a child

some seem to feel it is on camera.......... IF something happens it wraps up in a hour like on TV crime.... IT doesn't ....
people are hurt and yes sometimes killed..... over smaller then you think amounts....

what is the answer?
much like other items like panhandling if a thug can grab a few hundred off someone they saw at an ATM ... why work at a job that takes maybe 24 hours to get that much. so making it harder for them to identify targets or making us less of a target is the only thing we can do on our own.

I'm with you there, Jeni. I didn't vote for legalising it because I figured it would be just like the casinos that were supposed to pay for better schools and solve all our problems and instead just introduced a crime element into the neighborhoods and caused the suicide rates to soar from all the new gambling addicts. Now we have marijuana everywhere, stoned drivers added to the drunk ones, and the Mexican drug cartel is taking over the farms -- it's so much handier for them, I'm sure they're grateful.
 
Follow home robberies have been increasing for a while especially in places like California where bank jugging is really increasing Follow victim home after they use an atm are getting too common. Also if they like your car they'll place a tracker on it and rob or carjack you later.
 
I'm totally against violent crime including muggings and juggings, but I'm not so sure about whether this crime is actually increasing, I'd guess it would be categorized as robbery or assault? Statistically those crimes have been slightly lower. Although I appreciate media teaching us to be safe, I am super tired of the constant media barrage screaming 'DANGER DANGER!' at us all the time.

I live in a small town and although I feel it's safe, I don't take anything for granted and try to keep my eye on my surroundings. I typically go into my bank to withdraw cash then put it directly in my handbag. When I exit the bank, I scan the parking lot quickly then get into my car and lock it. And I watch to see if anyone is following me while driving. It's just the way the world is these days...we have to keep our guard up.
 
One tact that might help for those in a car is get a dash cam and point at the driver side window. Try to hide it. If enough of these thugs get caught maybe they'll think twice. But prosecution and incarceration for these crimes is not aggressive enough.

Seattle just had a case where serial juggers followed home seven people then robbed them disabling some with a taser. When the suspects found out they wouldn't automatically be released they were ticked which helps show incarceration or fear of works but is not the norm.

In the video example shown , I would have just ran them over ... but officer I was so traumatized , my foot must have slipped of the brake pedal .
 
I would say I have not been to the bank or an ATM for over 2 years. When I have had to go it was only for deposit of a check when the doctors have charged me wrong, insurance paid more than they thought.

I don't carry cash except for loose change. I do have about 6 dollars in my purse right now, that is unusual. Everything goes on a credit card so I get my cash back rewards.

I don't often have to use a check or cash to pay for anything. The companies I use for home repair, plumbing, electrical, heat/AC can take my credit card at home. I have used them for years and have never had a problem with any type of fraud.

That said, I am always aware of my surroundings and I am careful. It also helps that I look like a person that does not have much money. I drive an old car, I don't wear jewelry when I go out, less chance of being bothered by any criminal.
I find it very funny how some stores react when they check to see if I can afford something when they go to run my card and see I have no problem charging anything I want.

I LMAO when a sales rep sees that they missed a big commission by not assisting me when I am in their store. I always hope it will make a change/difference with how they treat a potential customer. Just because I am an older woman, gray hair, not covered in the illusion of designer brands does not mean I do not have the purchasing power of anyone else.

If a CC clears, how and why would they check. I wouldn’t want a store clerk looking at my credit or bank info. The CC company has approved me, so it’s none of the stores business.

I agree about some staff ignoring older women/people. Little do they know what we can afford. I still remember waiting a woman who was dressed to the nines and looked well off trying to find a card that would clear.

This is only is there is a special discount available to make a large purchase. I am quick to take advantage of those when I can. That is when they are shocked by my credit score. I may have to open an account to get the savings but normally it is closed after my purchase.
 
I am to the point where I don't care. If someone wants to hurt me I will say just go ahead, I have nothing to give you. Most of these young people just think it easy money, they don't want or have the courage to fight with anyone. They are more concerned about getting caught in the long run.

I do live in a safe community but I am aware of what could happen. The worst, most of the time are panhandlers. That alone aggravates me. I will bring food out of the grocery if I see someone in need but I will not give them money. If they are hungry they are happy to get a loaf of bread, peanut butter or something along those lines.

Never heard the term "jugging" before, so thanks for defining it.

Had a case of that here just yesterday. A lady had inherited £3000, and she went to her Building Society to withdraw £2800 for unspecified reasons. She was followed from the Society to her car and was mugged.

These are the times we're living in, I'm afraid. When withdrawing money you should look behind you, and around you, and be vigilant. If you're getting a large amount of money ask to speak to someone in a secure room and do the transaction there, out of eyesight of others.
