The 'Nice People Club'.

One of the nicest young men I know came from good stock. His upstanding grandparents attended my mother's church and I believe his grandfather was an elder or deacon. This young man reached out to restaurants and organized a group of volunteers so that meals would be prepared and delivered free of charge to certain seniors during COVID. My DIL, may she R.I.P., put me, my blind friend and two of my blind neighbors on the list, the latter three at my request. At first the dinners were delivered 5 days a week, but as the list grew, it was ultimately cut down to twice a week.

That same young man got together with 11 of his friends and got them to agree to tip the waitress at a local restaurant $100 each. That they did and the waitress got a $1,200 tip that day. She had served my husband and I a couple of times and was always so nice and attentive. She was certainly deserving of that nice surprise.

Thank you @timoc for starting this wonderful thread!

I remember writing a poem last year about SF and am sharing it once more with you:

Senior Forums

Share the joyous smile
A friend you have been
A friend I cannot see
But read your texts online
And through fragments here and there,
I piece together daily your lives, your worries,
Your triumphs, your birthdays.

Faithful, loyal friend,
You sign away your thoughts,
Like brushstrokes,
You color my world vividly.
As I enter your world,
I see your photos, youthful or recent,
I dance to your music, or croon to your love songs,
I play your games and answer questions
And ponder upon your quotes.

People reaching out, we are,
Fingers barely touching
Across the vast cyberspace
You may be like me, alone
In this world, from Australia
To America, to England,
Yet, we are not alone, not anymore
For we triumph together
When one of us succeeds
And we sympathize
When one of us is hurt
Yet we are free to go,
Though we will be missed,
And we are free to wander back
To this rich world of loving, caring, seniors -
What better friends than this?

For years I promised myself that I'd take a trip to Paris and go to the top of the Eiffel Tower but It wasn't to be.
Have any of you Nice People been there and what was it like? 😊

I was behind a young kid at a chinese fast food restaurant. He carefully picked out what he wanted them to serve him. They rung up his order and he took off. They yelled but the kid was out of sight. I paid for his meal; he obviously was hungry. The employees yelled and asked me why I did that. I said "because I am nice" and walked away. I stared at them when I saw them pointing at me; still angry.

I went years ago (in my 20s) and don't remember the rust, but do remember the thrill of being up there. Our ride wasn't as crowded as HD's.

Europe has become a very crowded continent in the last couple of decades....particularly places like London and Paris..

I don't remember a time when London wasn't crowded. I spent a good deal of time there in the 70's, and it was the crowds that made it more exciting. I think transport has a lot to do with it. Transport links in London have always been good, and the better the transport, the smaller the city. Paris is the same.

It's worth remembering, as an example, that traffic patterns in London are managed in real time. There are claims that traffic patterns are manipulated to suit an agenda. I'll let others to think as they will on that. For me, such things simply obscure the underlying problems.

There isn't a housing shortage in the UK. There is a shortage of affordable housing (based on average wages). There are many reasons for that. Some areas of London are full by design, such as the West End. I used to travel to the West End for a night out in the 1970's, for goodness sakes, I didn't go for the elbow room.

Go to, say, Germany, and there are swathes of empty land. There is no shortage of land there. If you look at tourist spots, such as near the coastline, sure. But otherwise, there is land. Hell, even during my time in Denmark, I learned that there are concentrations of land that are congested, but the country as a whole - not.

What I could not get over in London was how those massive double-decker buses navigate the narrow (relatively), often curvy streets, seemingly with little effort. Whooshing past each other and merging in and out of traffic. Hats off to the drivers; they must have nerves of steel

The 390 bus route goes through the West End - so lots of touristy spots.
