If You Were Gone, What Would They Find

If you passed away and family or friends came in to deal with your things, what unexpected things might they find. The kind of things that they might say, ”hum, I did realize that about her/him”.

I was organizing my plastic storage bags today and realized someone might think I have a weird obsession. It’s started when the type with the actual zipper tab ones were out of stock. Then it was only certain sizes came back in the stores. Now I seem to buy some extras whenever I find them. I have two boxes of them, so maybe it’s ok for them to think I had an obsession. Maybe I’ll quit buying them so they won’t think I had a few screws loose.

I swear, @Jules , this is the first question I've seen on the whole forum that terrified me too much to answer. Truth! Don't even want to think about it... but I'll enjoy reading all the answers!

I was just thinkin about this...this morning, while watching a crime show. The wife was leaving written evidence behind in case anything ever happened to her.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about any of that. But, what letters do I have hidden somewhere? A quick search through my memory assured me I was alright. No secrets to be revealed. :)

However, I do have a few private hmmm, unmentionables that may surprise someone. Or not.
Otherwise, I'm clean. ;)

No useless memorabilia. My wife & sons would find a well documented outline of financial information needed to transition from my accounts. Would also find instructions about pre paid cremation & burial documentation. List on docs would be auto pay & typical monthly expenses. Last the list of passwords to various accounts

Best to leave less for them to wonder about.

About 35 years ago, my next door neighbor who had become a friend called me over to her house. She gave me a key to her house and a key to a locked box that was under her bed.

She requested that if anything ever happened to her that I get the box from her house, open it and burn the diaries that were in the box....without reading them. In no instance was I to let her husband get hold of them.

I was reluctant to agree. That could be looked upon as burglary by her husband. Instead I suggested that she keep the diaries locked up at my house and just add her current entries to the box.

We did for a couple of years until we moved.

I never found out what happened to the diaries. Her husband died first and she followed a few years later.

I can't think of anything I have that I'd be worried about.

I have no secrets left. Our daughter has been helping me to clear out lots of accumulated detritus and I have been having long conversations by phone with our son who lives about 3 hours drive away. He's been learning quite a lot about his mother that he never knew before.

When I finally drop off the twig, I hope to leave lots of happy memories and no nasty surprises

My musical instruments, piano, synthesizer, harp, guitar, violins, viola, a ukulele, and music books. My watercolor paintings and paint-by-number acrylic paintings as well as watercolor supplies. Several throws that I knitted for cold winter nights. My published books, and many, many books on the shelves. My lovely plants that I faithfully water daily. My treadmill. My icons from a monastery. My furniture, sewing machine, and clothing. My earrings. I love earrings. My diaries and poems scattered here and there. My computers and all the stories and poems and music I wrote in them.

My diaries are all long gone. I won’t be leaving anything with private thoughts, etc for my kids to find. I do have all my estate paperwork up to date. Someone could pack my condo in less than a day.

I admit they will find my stash of various things I like to keep on hand. Nothing exciting, just toothbrushes, paste, mouthwash, toilet paper, razors, dove soap, zip lock bags, foil, large trash bags.

Those last three I buy at one place. I don't go there often so I stock up when I do. The other items are basic things I buy when on a very good sale. The kids kind of know it is here, they used the stash when they lived with me.

I don't think you have a loose screw. 🤗

If anyone needs any pens or paper, it’s time for me to start donating it. I bought two more felt pens the other day. Too bad it was prior to me looking around for things I have too many of.
